Men's Nightshirt

Updated on June 11, 2014

Men's Nightshirts and Nightgowns

If you're looking for a great gift for dad, consider buying him a men's nightshirt. Nightgowns and nightshirts are far more comfortable than pajamas. Women shouldn't be the only ones that enjoy the comfort and freedom that only these free flowing garments can offer. Men can wear nightshirts and nightgowns too, in fact 13% of men already choose to sleep in some sort of sleep shirt. There are plenty of choices for men's sleepwear, such as flannel, cotton, knit, and more.

My grandfather, who I called Papa, loved to sleep in along button down cotton nightshirt. He always reminded me of Rip Van Winkle in it. When I was a young girl I thought Papa was super old fashioned, which he was, but the real reason he wore nightshirts is because they're so comfortable. They provide warmth just like pajamas do, but they also allow you to move freely and comfortably throughout the night. My Papa was right about most things, and sleeping in a comfy men's nightshirt was just yet another example.

Browse the comfortable and classic men's sleepwear on this page and find the perfect gift for you dad or husband.

History of the Nightshirt

Learn the origin of this comfortable sleep wear

It is defined as any loose garment that's worn by men or boys in bed while sleeping. You may recall the old 1841 poem that begins:

Wee Willie Winkie runs through the town,

Up stairs and down stairs in his night-gown,

Tapping at the window, crying at the lock,

Are the children in their bed, for it's past ten o'clock?

Making it clear that men have been wearing comfortable night gowns for centuries. The first mention of night shirts sprang up in the Middle Ages. Before then, most people either slept in their day clothes (people were much less concerned with cleanliness back then) or in the nude.

The earliest night shirts were actually just plain undergarments, which were nothing more than a super long white cotton shirt. By the early eighteenth century, however, a man's sleep shirt could be as ornate as his day clothes. Clothing catalogs from 1915 mention a "longcloth nightshirt" for men. By 1890 pajamas began to steadily replace sleep shirts for men. However, they can even be found today for guys that prefer to wear looser fitting garments to bed.

@dellgirl: Thanks. My grandfather used to wear nightshirts during the cold winter months. That's what gave me the idea to put this page together.
