Mohawk Hair Styles - History, Variations, & Social Stigma
Make A Statement with Mohawk Hair Styles
If you choose one of hundreds of mohawk hair styles that are on offer, then chances are you are trying to make a statement; one thing is for sure and that is that you are not trying to blend in to the crowd. A Mohawk is a statement of your uniqueness and your ability to show that you are not afraid.
History of the Mohawk
The history of the Mohawk goes back centuries and to different tribal cultures, but in the most recent decades, this way of expressing yourself has been looked down upon by many. The cult punk era of the nineteen seventies and eighties in Great Britain saw hundreds of youths parading the street with crests on their heads, multicolored spikes and even safety pins through their noses.
The era was one of turbulence and songs were even written about the children of this revolutionary time who wished to make a statement about their true identity. Unfortunately this craze also brought about many disturbances especially in large cites such as London, and you were shunned from employment if you decided that this outrageous way to dress was for you.
The actual origins of this hairstyle go back to the Mohawk American Indians, although the style was not intended to make a statement, it was purely normal for these people of America before the island was settled by today s citizens. When the states became settled, the settlers had no choice but to accept the style of these Indian who were indeed the first to arrive onto the territory.
Once the settlers to America learned to accept and not feel intimidated by such styles, they too started to dare to walk the streets sporty bright green or red spiky hair. Unfortunately, even to date the irony stands that even an actual Mohawk Indian is often judged by wearing what is actually his tribal and traditional style.
The heritage of the haircut carries on to date, and now you can of course find people in all corners of the world who are not afraid to take to the street with hair so tall that even the most liberated of people cannot help but stare. Originally worn as a sign of pride for their culture, this unique way of wearing the hair is now seen all over the world.
Stand Out from the Crowd
If you wish to stand out from the crowd, sometimes albeit against the opinion of the general public, then a bright style of spikes and fluorescent colors is just what you need. Wearing your tresses like this is a way of telling society that you are an individual and you are indeed not afraid to show your individuality in public.
Today there are many variations on this traditional Indian haircut that range from a horse mane style where the hair is continued further down the back, to a shorter and spikier version that is easier to manage. If you are considering sporting such a look then you need to make sure that you will not be putting at risk either your career or your studies.

Various Mohawk Styles
There is too much prejudice surrounding the wearers of such haircuts, and society will link these individuals to groups of reprobates and unemployed of society. What the people need to learn is that the desire to express oneself through a unique haircut should indeed have no bearing on the intelligence of the individual or indeed their capability to live within the rules of society.
But, besides the fact that there has always been social stigma attached to sporting such gloriously brightly colored styles, the trend continues, even if it now less popular, and you can still spot hundreds of youths in the streets of London dressed accordingly. What has caused upset and outrage amongst many if these individuals is that they are seen to be being judged by the way they look and their inability to conform to what society expects from them.
Just because a person is not frightened to express himself by sporting a bright red Mohawk haircut, this does not mean that he is looking for trouble. Street crime and violence is often seen to be the fault of such people, when in fact there is often no evidence to presume that they were actually the guilty party.
Society will always continue to have rules that will lay down just when it is and when it is not acceptable to flaunt six inches of bright red spiky hair. You may feel that it is not fair to be judged by your need and desire to look and feel individual, but you need to accept the majority vote that is shared by the rest of society.
