Muumuu Dresses Are Lovely Comfort Clothing for Boomers and Seniors

Updated on May 14, 2012

Colorful, Floral, and Best of All, Comfortable - Hawaiian Muumuu Dresses are Great Clothes for For Boomers and Seniors

One thing all the women seniors in my family shared over the years was a love for cute and comfortable house dresses. And Hawaiian muumuus were definitely a favorite style. My grandmother discovered them when she and grandpa took her aunt to Hawaii one year for a special treat. They loved the Hawaiian Islands. The climate. The food. The gorgeous and oh-so-comfortable Muumuu Dresses! She came back with a few and added more over the years. Back then, it was not so easy to buy them from the mainland. She had to find a catalog, order by "snail mail" and then wait. Nowadays, of course, with the internet and great stores like Amazon, they are easier to find and easier to buy. But they are still just as lovely AND comfortable as ever!

My sweet senior relatives enjoyed wearing these colorful Hawaiian "house dresses" in the house, as well as to the store, out to the mall, and even had some fancier ones they enjoyed wearing for those times they enjoyed dinner out. They appreciated how easy they were to put on and take off. And they loved how comfy they were. At this time of my life, "rassling" grandboys as part of the Sandwich Generation season I am in, I still prefer my side elastic waist jeans and pants, but I have to admit, these muumuus do have some lovely advantages. I decided to check them out for my senior moms and thought you might enjoy seeing what I found, as well.

This particular Hawaiian muumuu dress comes in two designs. This floral with a light background, and a similar floral with a lovely pink background. This is definitely comfort clothing for boomers and seniors as it's perfect for lounging or working around the house. You order it from one of my favorite and very safe stores, Amazon, and it comes to you via All MauiShirts clothing which is shipped from the island of Maui with "Aloha Love."

Hawaiian muumuu dress, Pink flower - A nice choice of comfort clothing for boomers and seniors going out to dinner

Are you looking for comfort clothing for the elderly seniors in your family who would like something to dress up in for dinner out with the family? This lovely floral Muumuu dress is just as nice at a restaurant as at home, don't you think? They'll feel pretty, perky, and special and look charming. And pink is such a pretty color for our faces. Being a member of the baby boomer generation, I don't often worry about makeup, and face coloring. But my senior mom really notices those things. These would certainly make lovely gifts for the elderly women in your family for Mother's Day, Christmas, birthdays, or any days.

Soft and Subtle Muumuu Dresses

Love the Hawaiian Muumuu Look But Prefer Smaller Flowers?

Many of our aging parents love the comfort clothing of the Hawaiian muumuu dresses. They are, indeed, quite nice for boomers and seniors. But not all like the look of the larger flowers and the brighter colors. Some of our sweet seniors may prefer a more subtle, quiet tone like these lovely muumuus.

Found at one of my senior mom AND elderly aunt's favorite clothing stores, Blair, these lovely dresses are fun to wear around the house or out and about. They are easy pullover dresses and I love that they are polyester knit AND machine wash AND dry (can you tell I HATE to iron).

I enjoyed reading the review about them from a woman who has enjoyed Blair clothes for over 50 years. She had purchased two of these comfortable dresses a year ago and was buying three more! Now that's someone happy with these dresses! :) If you'd like more information or want to check the great prices at , just click on the photo.

A Hawaiian Muumuu By Any Other Name - Be It Mumu - Mu mu - Moo moo - Moomoo - Muu Muu - They are still great clothing choices for boomers and seniors

Would you believe - I discovered the Hawaiian muumuu dresses can also be spelled:

Muu muu

Mu mu

Moo moo

Wow! That's a lot of ways to spell these lovely dresses that are such great comfort clothes. I don't care how you spell it as long as they are as comfortable for my sweet seniors as for me. And here's a fun tip. If you give them as gifts for the elderly women in your family, be sure to tuck in a pretty lei. A real flower one would be the best, but even a cute plastic or paper kids one will put a fun smile on their faces. They may not be able to take a trip to the Hawaiian Islands at this time of their life. But they'll enjoy a hint of Hawaii with a cute lei.

For those of us in the Sandwich Generation, caring for our aging parents, finding good comfort clothing for elderly seniors is an important part of our duties. If you have a senior mom who likes the Hawaiian muumuu dresses but needs something that opens easily in the back, Silvert's does have some good options including this lovely dress. Below is a drawing showing how it closes in the back. These would be especially helpful for those who have to help their aging seniors to dress in bed or a wheelchair.

These Hawaiian muumuu-style dresses are truly comfortable clothes for our elderly seniors that truly make dressing a lot easier. It has an open back. It also has a nice pocket where they can keep their tissues or other little personal items. These dresses are terrific and comfy clothes for our beloved elderly seniors who spend a lot of time in their wheelchair or beds. If you'd like more information, just click on the photos.

Here's another of the lovely choices of Hawaiian Muumuu dresses (or Moo Moo Dresses as they like to put it) at Silverts.

Isn't this pretty! With side seam pockets (I LOVE pockets!) and a loose fit, this dress is very comfortable for boomers and seniors, including those with special needs. While it makes a nice house dress it is so pretty, it would go out to dinner quite nicely as well. And like the dresses above, it's easy wash and dry. They are even made to be washed in a caregiving facility's laundry! Just click on the photo to find out more.

Sew Easy To Sew Hawaiian Muumuu Dresses - Muumuus Can Be Easy Handmade Gifts for the Elderly Women in Your Life

I confess, I can't sew to save my life. REALLY! I remember telling that to a girlfriend when I was pregnant with my last child - over 20 years ago. For years, I had tried to learn to sew. I had a machine. I had taken classes. I had sweated and toiled over it - all to no avail. She didn't believe me, though. So she told me to pick a simple maternity shirt pattern and she would help me make it. I did and she did - or tried to. After days and hours of working on that shirt, I finally botched it up so bad she picked it up, wadded it up, threw it in the trash and declared, "YOU ARE RIGHT. You can NOT sew!"

I can't tell you what a feeling of relief came over me. I've never tried to sew since and haven't missed it in the least. Except, of course, when I am in a fabric store with a grandchild, surrounded by such lovely material and patterns. I do wish I could sew for my grandkids BUT I am a wiz at the computer and my friend never was. We are each blessed with special gifts and need to appreciate the ones we have, right? :)

BUT for those of you who ARE gifted in the area of sewing and love the look of Hawaiian muumuu dresses - for yourselves or as gift clothes for your elderly seniors, there are some great patterns out there, like these:

Do you love em, hate em, give them as gifts?

My mother wore muu muu's and she loved them. Now I'm home recovering from knee surgery and wishing I had one.

Ahhh memories! I grew up in San Diego county in CA and as small kids and teens sometime in between the late 50's early 60's we wore muumuu's. I think they were a fad at that time but I loved mine, especially in the heat of the summer in the eastern part of the county.

I have worn them all of my life until I move to the mainland to travel. I don't have any more muumuus, but I still have two pareos left that I wrap around and wear.
