Nautical Outfits for Babies

Updated on March 15, 2015

You don't have to sail to find a cute sailor outfit for your little one!

Summer is coming up soon and so is the sailing season. What could be more cute than your baby in a little nautical dress or sailor suit? Regardless of whether you live a thousand miles from the sea, the adorable blues and whites make for the perfect summer wardrobe touch. Not sure about it? Take a look at the fashion options in this squidoo and outfit your little one!

The History of the "Sailor Suit"

Prince Albert Edward Sparked the Inspiration

After the Napoleonic wars (early 19th century), governments started creating the sailor suit as the chosen navy attire. The U.S. issued their first standard uniform in 1817 with both a winter and summer version. Not until 1846 did the naval sailor suit become a fashionable statement for children.

The change happened when four-year-old Albert Prince of Wales was dressed in a child version of the naval uniform. He sported his mini suit on the Royal Yacht as it cruised off the channel islands. Not only was his mother delighted (he looks so adorable!) but the entire public was as well. His outfit was done in engravings, a portrait even taken, and the idea spread rapidly. By the mid 1870s, the sailor outfit had become normal dress for little boys and girls across the world.

I had to show the portrait done of him. Over a hundred years later and adorable as ever!

Shirley Temple sports the sailor suit in Captain January - She looks cute too!

Captain January Inspiration

Shirley Temple's adorable looks and stage charm will win your heart in the film 'Captain January.' With her sailor suit at the ready and a smile which will melt the heart of even the toughest sailor, she sang her way to history. Purchase 'Captain January' and enjoy it for years to come both on and off shore.

Have you ever gone sailing?

Whether it be on the calm waters of your favorite lake or battling the sea waves sailing is enjoyed the world over. If you haven't experienced it for yourself then give it a try. You may find yourself in love.

Children's Story Books on Sailing - Read with your little sailor!

I grew up always reading and being read to. It's one of the best things in life you can do for your baby! Sure. They may not understand the words yet but just reading to them is already putting their brains off to a good start. Plus, it just might coax them into a nap.

Note: I looked up good books for children about sailing and supposed Swallows and Amazons is highly recommended as is Buoy.

Chronically ill and Lovin' the Sea!

For one of our anniversaries, my boyfriend and I made the long drive to Sister Bay to go sailing. When we arrived in the mid-afternoon, no one had gone because the wind was whipping up the waves making most people nervous to go out. I immediately said "yep. we are going!." All was well until one of the other three passengers started throwing up thus meaning we had to go in early :( O well. Someday I want to go sailing again soon!

By the way, captain Andy (yes, as a fan of the Deadliest Catch I was excited our captain had the name Andy), let me drive the sailboat. Thus why I have such a huge smile on my face!

I really enjoyed this lens. The nautical outfits that you found are great, but even more than that you provided us with a lot of seaworthy culture and history. Pinned onto my children's fashion board and blessed.

I love these adorable nautical outfits for babies! Love the Shirley Temple touch, too. I loved sailing when the wind was just one step up from calm. When the wind howled, I stayed off that boat! Another awesome lens!
