Find a Newborn Coming Home Outfit
Boy or girl, there's a perfect newborn coming home outfit for every baby
It may seem simple, but the newborn coming home outfit actually needs to meet several key criteria:
~ Above all, it must to be comfortable. Cotton is king. Try for cotton at least next to the skin, even if there's some non-cotton involved in the ensemble.
~ A newborn take home outfit needs to keep baby warm, especially those tiny feet & head.
~ It needs to allow for easy diaper changing (think snaps or an open bottom, as in a newborn sleeper "gown" or sack) .... new babies go through a LOT of diapers, so don't overlook this.
~ It needs to be photogenic. You (or somebody else, if you're too zonked) will be taking roughly two billion of them on coming-home day.
~ It's got to be as cute as your baby. Not possible, you say? Point taken. But it must be super ultra mega cute.
Below, some handpicked newborn coming home outfit candidates that are up to the challenge. I've categorized by boy & girl, but marked a few of these cuties as unisex options--in case you've decided to be surprised, as I was the first time round :) In addition, there's a "true unisex" category down at the bottom with choices that look equally "boy" & "girl."

The core piece in this set is a little sleeper sack -- soooo easy for diaper changes, yet so cute with the black and white trim. As a busy mom & not-very-skilled gift wrapper, I appreciate clever packaging like this that makes wrapping unnecessary.
It's only a matter of months before your son is blissfully pushing little toy trains around, so why not get a headstart with this vibrantly colored train-themed take me home set? The 3 mos. size fits up to 12 lbs., so should work for most newborns; if you're anticipating a smaller-than-average newborn, I'd put this through a wash and medium- or high-heat dry cycle before packing it up for the hospital.
Golfer dads (or moms) will love this onesie set, perfect for a summer coming-home date, or if you live in a warm place.
Macho dads-to-be may respond well to this tough (but cute) personalized coming home outfit for jr. Expect delivery -- of the outfit, that is! -- within 1-2 weeks of your order.
Right on time for baseball season, this mini ensemble pairs navy trim & accent stitching with sweet pale-blue stripes.
Like trains, cars are a virtually guaranteed fixation in the months (years? decades?) ahead if you're expecting a little boy. I love the look of gray + pastel, and not that your little guy will care, but the combo happens to be big lately :)
And what can I say? As mom to young musicians I can't help but love this sophisticated music-themed set.
Here is the perfect nautical option for a mini-prepster and/or future sailor.Ahoy!
This whimsical sleeper sack & matching hat are tailor made for photos.
The pink crown across her tiny chest says it all! The perfect outfit for bringing your little princess home to her castle.
So pretty! Soft ruffles & rosettes turn a simple gown shape into something truly special for coming home. This "baby prom dress," as one reviewer wittily puts it, could double as a comfy but beautiful baptism gown.
The attached skirt makes this newborn coming home outfit a bit more elaborate than some of the others, but it still looks cozy. Even at this age, apparently, you need not sacrifice comfort for style :) And this sweet take-me-home set for your tiny dancer becomes that much more precious when monogrammed. Of course, you'll need to have a baby name picked out!
A soft sleeper sack comes with matching hat & booties -- a true one-stop-shop for coming-home preciousness.
Straight out of a spring garden comes this timeless, vintage-inspired floral pattern. Tiny bows and ruffles add a girly touch without going over the top.
The strawberry-spotted set is another winner from Little Me -- a whimsically pretty alternative to standard polka dots :)
And if you're due around Easter, check out this bunny-themed charmer with teeny hearts sprinkled among the spots.
Ooh la la! Gift this tres chic ensemble to a Francophile mom-to-be -- or any family that loves to travel.
Like the black and white damask version, this features girly ruffles on the back and, per the reviews, is perfectly sized for a coming home outfit.
Head-to-toe pretty from chic tot clothier Petit Lem.
Keeping baby's gender a surprise? The coming-home options have never been cuter! Besides these two outfits, I think the "Safari" themed one from Little Me under Boys could be a fun unisex option, too.
A parent-and-child giraffe combo adorn this ivory gender-neutral footie.
This safari-themed set says "Boys," but as a sweet take on soft gray plus a pop of gender-neutral orange, it really works for boy or girl.
Here's one more take on pale gray plus color, this time with a fresh light green.
~~ i heart this art! ~~
Up next in the world of baby's room decor? Personalized art prints for baby's room, celebrating the individual baby girl or boy -- or the whole family with incredible "family tree" designs. Love love love.
