Non Diamond Engagement Rings

Updated on September 2, 2012

Non Diamond Engagement Rings

Non diamond engagement rings are the most popular they have been in a long time. This is due to many reasons, including: the high price of diamonds, news about conflict diamonds, and the desire to add color and fun to engagement rings.

There is also less pressure than ever before to get a certain kind of ring, or spend a certain amount of money. Many people feel that it is wise to spend conservatively on an engagement ring in order to help avoid debt.

While many people choose a ring with a center gemstone other than diamond, many of these beautiful rings also have diamond accent stones.

Tips for Buying an Engagement Ring - Non Diamond Engagement Rings

If you are planning on a surprise proposal and presenting a ring to your love, then you are probably feeling a little stressed out choosing the ring. First of all, congratulations for taking this big step! Getting engaged and married is an exciting and wonderful time for most people. Do not let shopping for an engagement ring steal some of your joy. I have some tips that will help you buy an engagement ring.

Most of these tips still apply even if you are shopping with your fiancee for a ring.

  1. Determine your budget. It is important to decide in advance how much money you are able/willing to spend on a ring. It is easy to go overboard while you are staring at lovely gems.
  2. Choose the type of metal you want for a ring. While this doesn't have to be absolute, you should at least know whether or not your fiancee would prefer yellow or white gold. You can get a clue about this by looking at the other jewelry that she wears. Most women favor one color metal over another.
  3. Make a list of gemstone types or colors that you will consider. For example, you may know that you want a pink ring. There are pink sapphires, pinkish rubies, and even pink diamonds.
  4. If you don't already know about the 4 C's (cut, clarity, color, and carat), then do go to
  5. While you may be planning to purchase a gemstone online to get a good deal, visit a local jeweler or two to check prices and look at gemstones in person. This will help give you a feel for what you are looking for in an online purchase.
  6. If purchasing a loose gemstone or gemstone ring online, make sure you deal with a reputable website. You want to purchase from a secure site and check the return policy before buying. Also, since colors can look different on different computers, rely on the jeweler's description of the color of the stone.

Knowing the 4 C's

Non Diamond Engagement Rings

While the 4 C's strictly apply to buying diamonds, the same concepts apply to gemstones. The cut is not only the shape of the stone, but it is also the quality of the cut. The cut can make all the difference in the beauty and value of the gemstone.

The clarity means how many inclusions, or flaws, can be seen in the gem. Some are visible to the naked eye, while some need a jeweler's loupe to view. In general, the less inclusions in a stone, the more valuable it is.

Color is self explanatory. Besides the color that you want, find out what the most desirable shades are for different gemstones. Really red rubies are most desirable and most expensive.

Carat refers to the weight of the stone. Different cuts can affect how large the gemstone looks, so always rely on the carat weight. Sometimes gemstones are measured in millimeters, but you should be able to find out the equivalent.

You may find while shopping that one of these becomes more important to you than another. When I was shopping for my engagement ring, I decided the color was the most important thing, rather than the size or inclusions.

Thank you for visiting. I hope you find this information useful.

Nice selection. I love the variety of colors. My fiance gave me a beautiful diamond ring with 14 tiny diamonds along the band and 8 little diamonds around a bigger diamond in the middle. I love it. For my wedding band however, perhaps I'll get something with a little bit of color in it. Thanks for sharing!

It's hard to veer away from the traditional, but you make a good point inthat there are many other beautiful gemstones that are frequently overlooked.

@BeyondRoses: When I got married I didn't even think of looking for a gemstone. It wasn't available like it is now. Now I would LOVE to get a sapphire ring. Thanks for visiting and commenting :)

I love this idea of a non Diamond Engagement Ring! Though I have a diamond engagement ring, in the last year, I have worn an Emerald ring as the engagement ring. Love it!
