Non Toxic Nail Polish

Updated on December 20, 2014

Pretty Nails Without The Nasties!

If you love using nail polish and having pretty nails, but you are concerned about the toxic chemicals contained within it, this lens will help you learn about what your options are. You will also learn which chemicals to avoid. This is especially important if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Some of the chemicals found in mainstream nail polish are carcinogenic and have been linked to fetal abnormalities.

I have chosen to feature various non toxic nail polish. We will take a look at some of the brands available and what benefits they offer.

OPI Non Toxic Nail Polish

Why Go Natural?

(Toxic Nail Polish)

You may sometimes have wondered just what is in that pretty polish that you put on your nails. I did some research and found out that there are indeed some pretty nasty chemicals in most nail polishes, that we would do best avoiding.

There is currently no such thing as totally natural/organic nail varnish. In fact most nail varnishes are INCREDIBLY TOXIC! Bummer hey! And what makes me feel super squemish is that our nails are very porous, meaning that whatever we put on them gets quickly absorbed into the bloodstream! Uck! But the good news is I was also able to find a few brands that don't have the most toxic, nasty chemicals in them. Meaning that we can still enjoy using nail polish without all the worry.

There are 3 main chemicals in toxic nail polish (see below) which are known to be carcinogenic and have also been linked to complications during pregnancy, birth defects and fetal abnormalities when used by women who are pregnant. They have also been associated with a host of other health problems such as headaches, burning throat, skin allergies, disorders of the nervous system and an increased risk of cancer These three chemicals are known as the toxic trio, and the brands I have selected on this page DO NOT contain the toxic trio!

I love OPI!

I love the OPI brand, because apart from being toxic trio free, it also glides on easily and gives really vibrant color. And it lasts longer than a lot of nail varnishes without chipping. OPI is my first choice.

OPI Non Toxic Nail Polish

OPI offer some gorgeous color choices for your non toxic nail polish.

So Which Chemicals Are The Really Bad Ones?

The Toxic Trio - Avoid These If You Can!

There are 3 main 'nasties' that you would do well to avoid.

Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP),

These 3 are all very toxic and are known for their carcinogenic properties.

Toluene is the ingredient which smells like paint stripper.

Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP). Phthalates are widely used to make plastic flexible. They are in a lot of consumer products including mainstream nail polish. Some studies have linked Phthalates to birth defects, respiratory, liver and kidney problems and increased risk of cancer.

Formaldehyde - and yes, that is Formaldehyde as in what they use to embalm bodies! In 2011, the US National Toxicology Program described formaldehyde as "known to be a human carcinogen" (Source Wikipedia).

Orly Non Toxic Nail Polish

Orly were one of the original companies to offer nail polish without the toxins and offer nail varnish that goes on nicely and stays on. Like OPI nail polish the Orly ones are reasonably priced.

Zoya nail polish is one of my favorite brands with some absolutely stunning colors. All shimmery and pretty.

Again this products is toxic by nature, however these products are some of the better choices.

My advice is to keep your use of nail polish remover to a minimum and then use one of these products when you do need to take your nail color off.

      @dsr485: Hi drs485,

I only use OPI myself now. However it's not too much trouble as the colours and quality of the varnish are good!

For me it's worth thinking about these things.
