Reasons to Get a Tattoo...or Not!

Updated on May 17, 2015

Why the Craze Over Tattoos?

Nowadays, it seems every Tom, Dick, and Sally is getting a tattoo...or two, or three! It's no surprise to see Harley Davidson bikers, hard rockers, and pro wrestlers sporting tattoos. But look around at a university campus, shopping mall, your local PTA, etc. and you will see all kinds of people getting inked nowadays.

Why do people get tattooed? Does it hurt? Do people ever regret getting one? Ask a dozen people who've gotten inked and you'll probably get many different answers to those questions. The reasons for getting a tattoo probably vary from one person to another as well. And while there are many different reasons to get a tattoo, there are many reasons to NOT get one!

My Thoughts on Tattoos

Personally, I don't understand the fascination with tattoos. Why go through the pain of getting injected with a needle hundreds or thousands of times so you can have art work on your body that doesn't wash off?!! Of course if you're paying to get a permanent tattoo rather than the lick-em-and-stick-em kind, you shouldn't want it to come off!

I like visual art and some of the tattoos I've seen are pretty amazing, but I wouldn't want to subject myself to the pain of the needle and the permanence of having a tattoo.

Reasons to Get a Tattoo

There are all sorts of reasons to get a tattoo. Personally, I wouldn't do it! But here are some reasons YOU might! Also keep in mind, these reasons for getting a tattoo may be GOOD or BAD.

  • A tattoo is way to memorialize a loved one who has passed away.
  • A tattoo represents a hero.
  • A tattoo illustrates a passion.
  • A tattoo looks cool!
  • Having a tattoo builds self-esteem.
  • The process of getting a tattoo feels good.
  • Getting a tattoo is something to do when drunk.
  • Getting a tattoo is something to do because of peer pressure.

Reasons to NOT Get a Tattoo!

Not everyone feels compelled to get a tattoo. Just as there are reasons for getting one (or more), there are reasons for NOT getting tattooed. Here are some reasons for not going under the needle.

  • Getting a tattoo hurts!
  • Getting a tattoo can lead to an infection.
  • A tattoo is a permanent feature you might later regret.
  • A tattoo becomes unattractive as the skin wrinkles and sags with age.
  • Everyone else is getting a tattoo.

People get tattoos for various reasons. Some put lots of thought and planning into getting tattooed while others get inked as a spontaneous response to peer pressure, drunkeness, or a combination of the two. If you have gotten tattooed, what is your reason?

If your going to get one then make sure it's by someone trusted as it's for life. I like tattoos they can look nice when they are done well, placement is also important. I have a couple which I designed myself this way they will always mean something special.

@ClassyGals: Agreed! Even though I don't really care about tattoos, they do look good if they are done well and they fit the individual's overall image.

I think tattoos are attractive in moderation. Thumbs up.
