Red Nail Polish Meaning

Do you wear red nail polish?

You're fresh, self-confident, and not afraid to be dramatic.

Bright red is a bold, look-at-me color that is a symbol for passion, fire, and authority.

Red nail polish personifies the inner strength of an individual, carefully leashed and just waiting for the right time to rear its powerful head.

Red nails also represent the innate sexuality of a woman.

Red Nail Polish History

One of the greatest selling items in the cosmetic industry is nail polish. Look around and you'll see that most women wear some nail polish.

Red nail polish is timeless. The art of applying color to fingernails started around 3000 B.C. in China. The mixture they use to make nail polish was a hodgepodge of bees' wax, gelatin, gum arabic, and egg whites. The Chinese also added the petals of flowers such as roses and orchids, and alum to their polish.

Modern nail polish was invented in the 1920s. The Charles Revson company became Revlon (they added the L in the middle of the name for the other co-founder Lachman). The first Revlon nail polish went on sale in 1932.

The use of red nail polish has been registered as early as the 15th century, when it was told that members of the Ming dynasty's royalty used red (and black) to paint their nails.

The most famous and most powerful women in Egyptian history also favored the use of red nail polish: Queen Nefertiti was fond of using ruby red for her fingers and toes, while Cleopatra regularly had her nails done in crimson.

It's as well interesting to note that women from lower ranks were forbidden to use deep red nail polish or nail color and they were only allowed to use much lighter shades.

By 1940, long red fingernails became very popular, due to Hollywood starlets and pinups, especially to actress. Since then, red nails remained on top, either long or short.

As we all know red is a very sexy, fiery, hot color! Red nail polish can make any woman feel sexy and vibrant.

What Shades of Red Nail Polish to Choose?

There are many red nail polish shades to choose from, ranging from the lighter ones that have more of a pinkish hue, to the near brownish-red ones that some may view as more mature appearing.

There's also the deep crimson nail polish that looks almost like blood, which surely gets the attention if everyone who happens to glance at the hands and feet of the daring lady who chooses to wear this shade.

To express joy and a carefree mindset, try brighter shades of red nail polish. For more mystery, go with a darker shade of red. Medium reds call for seduction.

You can wear blood orange and vermilion bloom nail polish during spring summer. For autumn and winter wear purer reds without an orange hue.

For conventional occasions, try a darker red nai polish with a tinge of purple.

True red nail polish looks great on light skin and very dark skin.

Soft coral and muted mauve/red tones look great on medium or dark skin. Bright red looks best on light-medium and olive skin tones. For pink-ish skin try an orange/red shade of nail polish.

Tips for Wearing Red Nail Polish

Red nail polish is bold, sexy and classic. What could be more classic than wearing red nail polish on fingers and toes?

Red nail polish looks best on medium-length nails (unless you're going for that vampy, femme fatale look).

Keep trying several shades of red nail polish, from blood red nail polish to extremely dark red nail polish, to burgundy, or even an orange-red hue. You should eventually be able to find a red nail polish color that you like on you.

If you plan on applying the red nail polish by yourself, make sure that you first remove all traces of your old nail polish and that your nails are clean.

Red nail polish has a tendency to stain your nails. Apply a base coat first so your nails are protected from unwanted and hard to remove stains.

Thank you for the article on red polish. I'm a guy that lives in Southern California and wears sandals almost every day of the year. I women's sandals because men's sandals are so ugly. I get a pedicure every two weeks and always wear bright red on my toenails. My favorite red are OPI Big Apple Red and Orly Haute Red. Both of these colors are really "true reds". I get a lot of compliments when wearing these colors. I have tried all colors on my toes but red is my favorite and I always go back to red. When I'm having a bad day it cheers me up to look down and see 10 pretty red toenails peeking out of my sandals.
