Regency Weddings A Man's Style

Updated on July 5, 2015

Regency's Men

My favorite type of man, this the Regency style man.

A Regency Man is a terrible thing to waste. I showed you how to dress, how to wear your hair and even what undergarments to make or buy, but now it is time for your guy to get a crash course on what it was like when men were men and women were women.

I love the look of a Regency style man and I want to help you give this look to your groom for your regency style wedding day.

So this drawing that I did of a Regency Wedding Couple is a good example of what men wore in the early 1800s.

Regency Manners

The art of being a gentleman.

Regency Manners is not just how you act and what you say. This man in this painting has confidence and conviction, he is a real English gentleman with style and grace. That is why I have added a Jane Austen manner book with my other Amazon picks.

He dresses well and reminds me how Colin firth stood in Jane Austen's 1995 Pride and Prejudice. Yes this movie might be five hours long, but it is five hours well worth it.

As for hair men wore it long or rather short with sideburns, with curls or without. There were a few vain men who had straight hair and would have it curled by their servants.

I have bent over backwards to fill my new lenses and articles with my own art to showcase my work, but I can not find a better example of Regency Style for man than this painting of Alexander MacKenzie by Thomas Lawrence (c 1800). I love Sir Thomas Lawrence's paintings and a copy of this painting is in my living room. This work is in public domain.

What is actually needed for a man with a budget. A waist coat, a naval style coat might work in a pinch. A white pirate shirt, or a cotton white shirt. A large white scarf matching the white shirt to tie in the fashionable way those men are known for. Dress slacks with a button front, pleats are a no, no. A Cain or walking stick, nice leather gloves, a top hat and pocket watch.

Your Regency Prince

I'm going to assume that your suitor is like these fine gentlemen here and are completely on board with a theme wedding. They like to fence (not stolen things), they like to hunt, they like to play billiards (fancy name for pool) played at an English billiard table, but most of all they love you and want to show you how romantic they can be.

This is a drawing I did.

Men would wear top hats, slacks, a white shirt with a large tie, canes, swords and gold pocket watches.

Watching your favorite Jane Austen movie might help you decide what look you want to copy.

Patterns and Buttons

Patterns and Buttons and regency house party dvd. Top hats, large umbrellas, canes, leather gloves, nice riding leather boots and pocket watches are all items that can be purchased off the rack or off websites like amazon or eBay.

All the clothes you need

This will show you what you will have to buy or have made, or make yourself for your renaissance man. The shirt, the coat, the pants all of it.

If you notice most of these clothes are light colored or white, which might help you if you belong to one of the churches were the men dress in white like their brides. In fact all you would have to do for the reception is change the white coat for black and the white top hat for black and you would have a completely fresh new look.

I've included patterns you can buy to complete this look and have even added accessories that might help set the mood like a walking stick. top hat, pocket watch and gloves.

I did this drawing of this Regency Couple.

Style of your trousers

Here is a close up look at the trousers worn by Regency men. This is the cut of the pants you will need for your groom. I have seen modern pants of a similar shape and style, however they were a bright lime color. These pants are a natural color, paired with a white shirt, pin striped double breasted vest and a long coat. These pants would be traditionally made out of linen, wool, cotton or whatever is the correct fabric for the climate and the season of your wedding. They have short pants in the same style, but traditionally men would wear long white socks with them or long leather ridding boots.

I drew this Regency Couple.

If you like the short pant look, you can wear ridding boots over your slacks.

I hope this is helpful for you planning a Regency style Jane Austen themed wedding.
