My Reiki Tattoo: A Symbol of Healing in the Skin

Updated on September 23, 2013

Tattoos With Soul

  • For many years I considered what image to get for my first tattoo. What could I stand to have with me for the rest of my life? I knew it would have to be something that I would want as a daily reminder of how I wanted to live my life. Symbols of my daily practices and spiritual practices stood out the most.
  • The tattoos that I have are personal reminders of the importance of spirituality in my life. This lens will describe my first tattoo of the Reiki Master Symbol surrounded by the elements of the earth.

Reiki Healing

is a form of therapy that uses simple hands-on, no-touch, and visualization techniques, with the goal of improving the flow of life energy in a person..

In 2004 I went through a training program to learn to heal myself and others using Reiki Energy. This was a pivotal time in my life and I was deeply moved by my experiences meditating and working with energy. I started the program looking for some way to help my ailing pets. Several had cancer and would have to undergo multiple surgeries. As I am not a vet I felt there was little I could do for them, so I turned to Reiki. I used the Reiki healing energy as I would hold the recovering animals to try to soothe their pain and confusion.

As I mentioned, it took me years to determine what I wanted on my body as a piece of permanent artwork. After my experience with Reiki, I decided I wanted to have the power of the Reiki Master symbol on my skin as a reminder to help and heal my family, community and the world. I would do what I could to spread comfort, compassion, and peace where ever I could. I have always connected very strongly with the Elements as they are the base components and energy providers in the world.

I searched also for at least a year to find just the right artist. I looked through magazines, websites and through many artists' portfolio until I came across Gabriel Cece. His art is full of brilliant color, flowing lines, and a depth of energy unlike any I had ever seen. It didn't matter that his shop was 4 hours away - he was going to design and create my tattoo. I sent him the key ideas and a picture of where I wanted it placed. He created a design custom made for my body.

On the day before my 30th birthday I made the trip out to Virginia Beach, VA to meet Gabriel and get started. It's been 5 years since that day and I continue to be struck with awe and delight every time I look at my tattoo!

Healing Through Tattooing - Explore the History of Religious & Spiritual Tattoo

Spiritual Tattoo: A Cultural History of Tattooing, Piercing, Scarification, Branding, and Implants
Spiritual Tattoo: A Cultural History of Tattooing, Piercing, Scarification, Branding, and Implants

Body mods have been on the scene since ancient times, traceable to as far back as 1.5 million years, and they also encompass scarification, branding, and implants. Professor John Rush outlines the processes and procedures of these radical physical alterations, showing their function as rites of passage, group identifiers, and mechanisms of social control. He explores the use of pain for spiritual purposes, such as purging sin and guilt, and examines the phenomenon of accidental cuts and punctures as individual events with sometimes-profound implications for group survival. Spiritual Tattoo finds a remarkable consistency in body modifications from prehistory to the present, suggesting the importance of the body as a sacred geography from both social and psychological points of view.

Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art
Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art

Reiki is an ancient and profoundly simple system of “laying on of hands” healing derived from Tibetan Buddhism. In the West, Reiki has been kept highly secret for many years. ESSENTIAL REIKI presents full information on all three degrees of this healing system, most of it in print for the first time. Teaching from the perspective that Reiki healing belongs to all people, Diane Stein breaks new ground in her classic guide to this ancient practice. While no book can replace the directly received Reiki attunements, ESSENTIAL REIKI provides everything else that the healer, practitioner, and teacher of this system needs.

I personally do have a Reiki tattoo - it's Kanji Reiki the tribal way :). I took Kanji Reiki symbol, and changed it a bit to get a tribal feeling to it and I have it tattooed on my arm.

Still, I do recommend caution when creating spiritual or magical tattoos - such permanent placement of a spiritual symbol might prove problematic if one day a person decides to change his path.

hi,there is tattoo artist who was a priest earllier in bangalore india he has done some research about ancient ritual of tattoos healing people with the right kind of energy, as i read in one of the ancient kannada tribal history book that you get a tattoo regarding the health problem, that particular problem would be solved, so thought of giving it a try ,got a hanuman tattoo on nape of my neck for my spondilitis problem exactly after three weeks with out any medication my neck is completely fine even the doctors are shocked, then i and a doctor went to the tattoo artist to check on what basis he selected the particular tattoo design, he told us that tattooing is a ritual in hindu vedic relics and he selected the tattoo where hanuman is taking the sanjeevani mountain for the purpose of lakshman in ramayana so that's it, it healed my problem also ........

Although not everyone's tattoo has particular meaning, I think it makes them all the more special when they mark a special memory or pay tribute to something important to you. Beautiful ink!
