The Beauty, Simplicity & Comfort of a Ruana Wrap
What is a ruana? A ruana wrap, is often described as being like an open poncho. I tend to think of them more like shawls. A ruana is easier to wear than a poncho because you don't have to pull it over your head. You can just wrap it around you like a shawl. But unlike many other wraps and shawls, the sides are open, leaving your arms more free.
They may range from being made of a heavier fabric, of thick wool perhaps that are warm and cozy....to being more like a light, filmy fabric that is as much a fashion statement than anything...or anywhere in between.
The first ruana I ever owned was a black, fleece one that my mother gave to me for Christmas one year. I had never heard of a ruana back then, so I merely referred to it as my shawl. I wore it a lot (and I still do)! It was very convenient to throw over my shoulders and didn't get in the way of my arms as much as other shawls, or slide off at inconvenient moments, as I moved around. I believe a ruana wrap is something many women will enjoy...the warmth, the comfort, and the style.
Last Christmas I finally decided to get my mom a ruana wrap for her to wear as she sits her chair with her needlework. It was one in a lovely teal jewel toned green, the kinds of colors she likes. It was nice to give to her a great gift like she had once given me.
Ruana Wrap - Shawls
Here are some ruana wraps I found on Amazon that I think look both stylish and comfortable. They vary in material and price range, so you can see examples that fit various budgets, preferences and choices for different types of weather.
A simple, solid print available in brown, black, burgundy and camel colors. It is made of soft to the touch acrylic with a luxurious feel.
If you like a walk on the wild side then this leopard print ruana might be just the thing for you. It is available in camel, brown, burgundy and grey as well.
This is one of the most expensive of my picks, but probably my favorite because of the colors. The fact that it is made of alpaca wool certainly adds to my like of it too. I do not own an alpaca ruana, but I do own an alpaca blanket throw that I quite like so I imagine I would like this as much, if not more, too.
This is a wonderful example of a ruana wrap that would look great with elegant evening wear. It seems to have a bit of a shimmer to them and have wonderful jewel tone colors.
Have you ever worn a Ruana Wrap?
Ruana Wraps for Fall and Winter Fashion
Although ruanas can be worn anytime of year and for various occasions, such as a light one on a beach on a summer night when the night is just a little cool...I tend to think to think of them as something cozy and warm, perfect for when the autumn air begins to chill. To snuggle up in an armchair next to a fire with a wool ruana keeping me warm as I turn the pages of a good book.
While a ruana with a hood conjures up images in my mind of walking through the woods with a basket on my arm...okay, maybe that's a bit too fairytale'ish...but no one has ever accused me of being unromantic. ;)
More Ruana Wraps
Although there are more available and the selection is changing all the time, in case you wanted to see some more, here are a few more I have found that I like.
This is a pretty wool ruana that is available in many colors. It is elegant and light, but also warm.
This knitted ruana is perfect for little Miss Riding Hood...although it does come in other colors.
