Sailboat Themes in Jewelry and Art

Sailboats have been the subject of art since man has been sailing and painting. Nautical wall art, like the print of the beautiful Seagulls Lead the Way, shown above, is popular with boaters, sailors, yachtsmen, and others.

Jewelry is an art form that allows everyone to express themselves. Among those with a love for the sea, boats and ships are favorite maritime themes. Sailboat themes are particularly popular.

How the America's Cup Got Its Name

There's a lot of history to the yacht race and the trophy, both of which we routinely refer to as "the America's Cup." But. here's a brief overview.

The first race, in 1851, was not called the America's Cup

The original name of the trophy was the R.Y.S. £100 Cup. The Royal Yacht Squadron (R.Y.S.) held an annual regatta that was normally for members only. But, in 1851, the much ballyhooed new schooner, America, was in town. She'd sailed across the Atlantic to take part in yachting competitions.

The members only rule was waived for the 53 mile race around the Isle of Wight. It was declared an International Race, and open to all nations.

America entered the race, started late, and won.

The trophy went to a new home at the New York Yat Club, and was renamed America's Cup, after the winning boat, not after the country. It it still called that today.

The race lives on, too. The winner of any race is the defender, and when a qualified challenge is issued, a race is held. A defender has custody of the cup until such time as a challenger defeates him. Then, the challenter becomes the new defender and assumes custody of the trophy.

Since 1851, there have been 34 challenges. The New York Yacht Clug successfully defended the cup 25 of those times.

The current defender is the Golden Gate Yacht Club. They have accepted a challenge from Luna Rossa Challenge (tesm) of Circolo della Vela Sicilia (club.) The race is being planned for 2017.
