Teenage Girls. Shopping, Fashion, Design, Girls Clothing, and The Mall
Going To The Mall For Clothing WithTeenagers
Teenage Girls. Girls Clothing, and The Mall. During the 1960's I became a teenage girl interested in girls clothing, and the mall , it was a wonderful time and brought new teenage girl freedom to my life. Living in a rural community we were in shock to discover that our township was becoming a full fledged city. My family moved from the City of Detroit to make a new life in a rural community, and give us the opportunity to have livestock, gardens and freedom to roam. The idea was wonderful, as many families in the community had large red barns filled with horses, cows and chicken, teenage girls and new friends. We were going to live our dream in the country.
Well event the best of plans can fail. We suddenly found out that the country place we lived in was becoming a city. New regulations and restrictions were put into place and our dream for livestock was gone. Back in the day we lived in a place called Clarenceville township for hundreds of years. Now they would be renaming the city to Livonia at the time my entire family was very disappointed. My sister was already a teenage girl at the time and her teen fashion sense would soon be satisfied with the construction of one of the first shopping malls.
By the time I was one of the teenage girls the city was in full construction. The Livonia Mall was built and this meant that I was free to roam the mall with my teen friends in search of teen fashion. I had come of age and since the mall was only one block from our home it soon became an almost everyday activity. We shopped not only for girls clothing, but teen fiction, teen gifts for our friends, and went to the Cinema all without adult supervision. Those were the days, no worries, just fun and an air conditioned mall for a cool summer retreat.

Teenage Girls and a Shopping Bags - Let's Head to the Mall
The summer before the Mall opened a new library opened 2 blocks from our neighborhood. My best friend and I would take a hike down the narrow dirt road to search for new teen books, especially teen fiction for our summer reading. We quickly made a routine of heading for the periodical section of the library to enjoy the selection teen fashion magazines of Glamour, Teen, Hairstyle and Vogue magazines before heading for the teen books.
We searched these magazines for teen fashion trends for teenage girl. Both of us knew how to sew and our mother's had home sewing machines at home. Once the Mall opened we headed for the Singer Sewing Store to find patterns to create our fashions. Kresges carried a large selection of inexpensive fabric for home sewing and a limited collection of Simplicity patterns. Fabric ranged in price from 10 cents per yard all the way up to 79 cents per yard.
Our teen fashion search also included hour of research shopping the department store for current trends. Back then we could put clothing on layaway and pay on it with our week allowances. That meant we would have to scrimp on other things such as French fries, and ice cream sundaes.

A Day at The Movies
Spending a Day Watching a Teen Movie - Teen Entertainment
When the Mall was built it included a Cinema for entertaining our community. It was a place to escape on a Saturday afternoon with friends. On Tuesday morning the Cinema hosted Free Ladies Day Movies. My mother insisted that we attend weekly and we watched Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Jerry Lewis and other entertainment throughout the summer. As a teen it was a special time with my mom, afterwards we frequented Cunningham's Drug Store Snack Bar for a breakfast of toast, coffee, eggs and bacon for the amazing price of 50 cents per meal. This was our secret time out and my mother told me not to let any of the other kids know about the breakfast.
Throughout the first year of the mall's opening new stores popped up everyday. We had a new Record Shop that carried all the favorite singles and album of the time. Living in the suburbs of Detroit near Motown, local artists like The Four Tops, The Supremes and other top names made appearance at the store. We were in heaven.
Soon 1967 was upon us and our carefree summer existence ceased. A time of racial unrest was marked by the Detroit Riots. My older brother was a member of the National Guards, and was part of the patrolled street of the city. Curfews were in place, we were not allowed to go anywhere without adult supervision. We were all scared and life was never the same afterwards.
