The Best Men's Cologne

Updated on August 16, 2014

Unique, Fresh and Sexy Scents for Men

I love fragrance. The scent that you wear is a big part of your personal style.

Here are 10 of my favorite colognes for men. Of course, I want to point out that fragrance has no gender so ladies, don't be afraid to try some of these on.

Instead of listing the top sellers or most popular colognes, I've focused on unique, high quality scents that will stand out and make a statement.

I believe that the best fragrance is something unusual and memorable that you enjoy wearing. I think if you read my descriptions and check out the notes listed in each fragrance you'll be able to find something that's great for you.

Any of these colognes/fragrances would make great gifts as well - read the descriptions and imagine which one fits your recipient best and I'm sure they will love your choice.

"Fragrance speaks the loudest on a subliminal level." - perfumer Marian Bendeth

Creed - Royal Oud

From the legendary house of Creed, my first selection is "Royal Oud."

This scent is stylish, green, aromatic warm, woody and spicy.

Oud wood is becoming a very popular ingredient in newer fragrances, making this a very "of the moment" scent, yet still unique.

Creed Royal Oud Unisex Millesime Spray, 2.5 Ounce
Creed Royal Oud Unisex Millesime Spray, 2.5 Ounce

Top notes: Lemon, pink berries, bergamot.

Middle notes: Cedar, galbanum and angelica root.

Base notes: Regal Indian oud, sandalwood and tonkan musk.

Annick Goutal - Les Nuits D'hadrien

Fresh, citrus, spicy: Annick Goutal's "Les Nuits D'Hadrien" is perfect for summer.

Middle notes: Caraway, cypress, juniper, basil and ylang-ylang.

Base notes: Amber, patchouli, musk, vanilla and sandalowood.

Floris London - Special No. 127

Elegant, masculine, classic: This is a modern masterpiece from Floris of London. First released in 1910, this scent is a true classic.

Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver

By far the most "mainstream" and well known of the fragrances here, Tom Ford's interpretation of a classic Vetiver is a truly inspired take.

This is suitable for all seasons - great for the younger, active man, it's a fresh and sexy version of a classic masculine scent.

Top notes: Lime leaves, bergamot, tangerine

Middle notes: Spices

Base notes: Precious woods, Vetiver

Caron - L'Anarchiste

I didn't want to list this one - it's a personal favorite of mine and I almost want to keep it to myself. L'Anarchiste is a truly unique scent. I've never encountered anything quite like this.

I get lots of compliments when I wear L'Anarchiste and love the warm, spicy, aromatic feel of this one. It's complex, memorable and it works in both cold and hot weather.

L'Artisan Parfumer - Dzongkha

Named after the national language of Bhutan, this is an extremely unique scent. This is for the man who isn't afraid to stand out.

Tea leaves, incense and lychee give this fragrance a certain exotic quality that's very adaptable. Probably best for evening, Dzongkha could be too sexy for the office.

Guerlain - Vetiver Men

Guerlain needs no introduction. One of the oldest perfume houses in the world, this is a very special scent that's a classic.

Evokes a refined gentleman - Think vintage muscle car, danish modern furniture and a gray tweed sportcoat but the best thing about Vetiver is how versatile it is; practically anyone can wear this and pull it off.

Maitre Parfumeur Et Gantier - Jardin Du Nil

Here's another very unique scent. This is a masculine, dark, musky floral that's stood the test of time.

Odori - Tabacco

Odori is a relatively unknown fragrance house that's making a name for itself with sexy, alluring scents like the excellent Tabacco. I LOVE this one. The tobacco leaf note is mysterious, enveloping and totally awesome.

Creed - Millesime Imperial

Another Creed - this one is casual, adaptable, citrus based cologne. It's very fresh and would be a safe choice for the undecided, a younger man or someone who doesn't normally wear cologne.

Keiko Mercheri is one of my favorites. I love the Aqua Universalis for daily use.

Several of these scents look intriguing. I have a signature scent but I would try others just for something different

@julieannbrady: Fragrance is hard to buy online, no doubt. Everyone likes someone who smells nice though =p

Well, that's quite a list. I wish we had smell-o-vision on the internet to experience these selections. I always loved the smell of Polo by Ralph Lauren -- if a man is wearing it and he walks by, I will turn my head and look ... and sometimes follow!

Great lens! I really like perfumes and I have many, so everyday I can choose another great one: My favorite now is the Carolina Herrera 212, just great... thank you for sharing this info, will check them soon...

I was researching fragrances online and made a startling discovery. Four of my favorite fragrances throughout the years were all designed by the same perfumer. I had not realized the connection previously. I dug deeper into the research and discovered that people often choose favorite scents within a crossover of similar scents. Quite surprising.

Very interesting, but a country boy like me had a lot of trouble understanding what you were talking about. It was fun trying to figure it out though. :-)

@shellys-space: The best thing about fragrance is it's unisex - many of these would smell great on women! I'll have to check out TSAR if I can find it!

@Ardyn25: Thanks! Scent memory is amazingly powerful - I enjoy keeping small decants of the fragrances that loved ones wear and smelling them from time to time. Even smelling something you wore in the past can transport you back in a remarkable way.

I actually prefer most men's fragrances over the women's colognes I have been introduced to lately. It has been a number of years since I worked in the cosmetic dept., but I did enjoy TSAR by Van Cleef and Arpels.

You did a good job of describing the scents and have some great selections. My brother wears

Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver, and my father uses the Floris No. 127. Its interesting how scent connects you to people.

Love the Floris No. 127. As you say, a true classic - worthy of a 007.
