The Best Winter Boots for Very Cold Weather - Womens

Updated on November 8, 2014

Extreme Winter Footwear for Extreme Cold

The last time I was in interior Alaska it was minus 50 degrees.

Now, that's cold!

I was working outside for more than three hours and my feet were toasty warm.

Want to know what I was wearing? Read on.

(A photo I took during a blizzard in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut)

What Kept my Toes so Toasty?

These are my Sorels. They are rated to -100.

I admit they are a little chunky, but Sorel and Baffin have some very stylish alternatives.

The nice thing is that the newer, flat heels look great with leggings, skin tight jeans and short skirts. Be Warm. Be stylish.

Chances are you'll never need boots that are insulated against such extreme cold, but if you live somewhere where winter brings snow and cold, you know how important it is to keep your feet dry and warm.

I've spent most of my life in the far north and there are two winter boot manufacturers I swear by.

If you don't see the exact style you're looking for, click on any boot and Amazon will give you lots of other options.

Shopping should be simple.

Sorel Womens boots

My Sorels are very heavy, so they're not great for running or walking for a long time.

OK..they are not really pretty, but fashion doesn't count when you are stuck miles from nowhere in the Alaska bush.

I like the fact that they have a replaceable felt liner, are waterproof and come up the upper part of my calf..

Chances are, where you live, fashion DOES count, so I hope you like these Sorel fashion boots.

Baffin..Home of the Inuit

These are the heavy hitters of warm boots. Some are rated to -148.

I have a shorter pair of Baffins which I really like for snowshoeing because they are incredibly warm and incredibly light.

The only problem with the shorter boots is that I have to wear gators in deeper snow.

Tips on Buying Winter Boots

Choose your boots in your regular size.

There should be room for a good pair of socks inside.

Never buy boots that are too small. Your feet will get very cold.

Some of these boots are so warm, your feet may sweat. Choose sports socks that wick away moisture.

It's important to keep your feet dry. Thar's why every boot showcased here is waterproof. Wet feet in very cold temperatures aren't just uncomfortable. They can be life threatening.
