Top 10 Best Ionic Hair Straightners

Updated on May 14, 2015

Top Rated Ionic Hair Straightners

With the right ion ceramic flatiron, you can straighten your hair while also nourishing and conditioning it. So how do you choose the right one? By figuring out what your hair needs, what you need, and how much you want to spend.

Below you'll find the top 10 best ionic hair straighteners. They're all great products but each one offers something the others don't. If you have thick hair, choose a straightener designed with bigger plates for unruly hair. If you're short on time, choose a straightener with tourmaline plates (you can straighten your hair 3 times faster). If you plan on sharing your flat iron with other people, choose one with an adjustable temperature range so it'll work for multiple hair types.

How Ionic Technology Works

In the old days, straightening your hair meant using a flat iron that was usually too hot and even though your hair ended up straight, it also ended up brittle and heat damaged. Now, thanks to ionic technology, you can straighten your hair while also keeping it nourished and healthy. I'm no scientist but I think I have a basic understanding of how ion technology helps your hair.

There are 2 kinds of ions: positive ions and negative ions. Positive ions are unhealthy and unwanted, while negative ions are healthy and helpful. When positive ions and negative ions collide, they become neutral. Hair usually contains positive ions and if you have brittle damaged hair, it has a lot of positive ions.

To generate negative ions, your straightener needs either ceramic or tourmaline plates. Ceramic plates or ceramic coated plates generate a decent amount of negative ions and are generally low cost. Tourmaline infused ceramic plates cost more but they generate 6 times more negative ions. Plus the tourmaline heats your hair 3 times faster (which means it works faster and lessens the risk or heat damage).

When the iron gets hot, the plates generate negative ions (via fine water molecules) and far-infrared heat. When you run your hair through the plates, the negative ions attach themselves to your hair and neutralize the unhealthy positive ions. The water molecules are absorbed into your hair, re-hydrating and restoring your hairs moisture balance. Then the far-infared heat penetrates and seals the cuticle from the inside out.

The negative ions fight frizz by neutralizing the electric charges in your hair. So if your frizz is caused by dryness or static electricity, you won't have to worry about it anymore.

HSI Professional Ceramic Tourmaline Ionic Hair Straightener

#1 Best Ionic Straightener

This is the absolute top rated ionic hair straightener! Even after 2,800 reviews, the HSI Professional Ceramic Tourmaline Ionic Flat Iron Hair Straightener still maintains its near perfect 4.5 star rating. Why? Because it's everything you want in an ion wet dry flat iron. The adjustable temperature range of 240°F to 410°F makes it the right temperature for every hair type. The 1" ceramic/tourmaline plates are narrow enough to straighten right down to your roots and as they straighten, they leave your hair smooth, shiny and completely frizz free. It has an ergonomic design that makes it easy to hold and the long swivel cord never gets in the way.

This comes packaged in a little bag that's perfect for traveling. Plus it comes with a sample bottle of hair serum.

If you're used to bigger plates and can't bring yourself to use these 1" ones, you're in luck. They also offer another model with slightly bigger 1 1/4" plates. It costs a bit more but it also has more upgrades.

Sedu Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Straightener

#2 Best Ionic Straightner

This ionic hair straightener heats up quickly and has a temperature range of 235°F to 410°F. The 1.5" tourmaline infused ceramic plates work faster and give you straighter hair. Most of the time, you only have to go over your hair once. It's also great for thick, coarse, unruly or curly hair. So if your thick hair has given you trouble in the past, give this Sedu ionic hair straightener a try.

Sedu Professional 1½" Flat Iron

This comes packaged with a little to-go bag that's perfect for traveling.

If you'd rather use the smaller 1" plates, you can purchase the Sedu Ionic Ceramic Pro Flat Iron, 1 Inch . The only difference between the them is the size (and the price!) so you'll end up with the same great results.

Bio Ionic OnePass 1.5" Nano Ceramic Straightening Iron

#3 Best Rated Ionic Hair Straightners

Given enough time, I think this flat iron will take over the number 1 spot. By taking advantage of nano-ionic hybrid mineral technology, it's become the fastest and most effective straight iron available. From the time you turn it on and set the temperature, it only takes 10 seconds to fully heat up. And the bio ionic nano-ceramic conditioning irons are so effective, most people can straighten their hair with just one pass. When you're done, your hair will be ultra hydrated, it'll feel smooth as silk and the shine will last for days.

Infiniti by Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Straightener

#4 Best Ionic Ceramic Hair Straighteners

This is one of those few products that gives you the best quality at the lowest price. This straightener has multiple heat levels and takes just 15 seconds to heat to it's highest point of 446°F. The 1" tourmaline ceramic plates float to give your hair full contact and because they're so narrow, you can straighten all the way down to your roots. And of course, the negative ions do their job and make your hair smooth and frizz free with an added shine. This straightener is very lightweight and it's long swivel cord makes it easy to use.

This straightener is also available in 1 1/2" plates and 2" plates. Because of it's high temperatures, I would seriously recommend using a heat protector.

Sedu Revolution Tourmaline Ionic Styling Iron 1"

#5 Best Ionic Straightener

Some people like to straighten their hair and then give the ends a little curl or flip. With the curved edge plates on this nano ionic styler straightner, you can do that with just one swipe. The tourmaline infused plates generate massive amounts of negative ions to leave your hair feeling nourished and healthy. Plus they're polished to prevent snagging or pulling. The adjustable temperature makes this versatile enough to work on many hair types (including very fine hair) without causing heat damage. This can also be used to curl your hair.

This nano ionic styler straightner is available in 2 colors, black or pink.

U9 1" Ionic Titanium / Tourmaline Ceramic Hair Straightener

#6 Best Ionic Hair Straightener

This ion digital flat iron is easy to use and gives good results. The digital technology lets you set it at the exact temperature your hair needs and it's ready to use within 30 seconds. It can handle wet or dry hair and either way, it will leave your hair feeling soft and conditioned. And there's no need to worry about if you remembered to unplug it because it has an auto shut-off function.

Paul Mitchell Protools Express Ionstyle Professional Styler

#7 Best Ionic Straightner

This is more than just a straightener. You can use this tool to make your hair straight, wavy, or curly. Or you can use to to add volume, curls or end flips. But no matter how you use this styler, it's innovative design ensures your hair will always end up shiny and silky. The 1" plates are cushioned with a unique blend of ceramic and silicone that glides smoothly over your hair and they're fused with an Express Ion Complex that surrounds your hair with negative ions to restore moisture and banish frizziness.

Solia Tourmaline Ceramic Ion Flat Iron

#8 Best Ionic Ceramic Hair Straighteners

The plates on this flat iron are perfectly aligned to ensure optimum hair/plate contact and even heat distribution. This, along with the negative ions created by the tourmaline will ensure your hair ends up straight and silky smooth. The swivel cord makes it easy to handle and the 1 1/4" plates can handle hair of any length. The only thing that I don't like about this hair straightener is that it only has one temperature. Because of that, I would recommend using a heat protectant on your hair.

This ionic hair straightner is available in 4 colors, although the black one costs $10 less. While you aren't supposed to receive anything but the straightener, many people have also received a free carry bag or free lotion samples.

Paul Mitchell Express Ion Smooth 1.25" Hair Straightener

#9 Best Rated Ionic Hair Straightners

This hair straightener has a special Express Ion Complex fused to the 1.25" ceramic plates to create an abundance of super charged negative ions. So while you're busy straightening, your hair is basically bathing in these negative ions, which protects against damage while making your hair soft, silky and frizz free. The adjustable temperature ensures your hair gets just enough heat and the super thin plates let you get even closer to your scalp. If you're looking for a straightener that improves your hairs health and offers consistently smooth, shiny hair, the Paul Mitchell Express Ion Smooth Straightener is for you.

T3 73522 Mane Tamer Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Flat Iron, 1.75"

#10 Best Ionic Hair Straightener

This flat iron definitely lives up to it's name! The Mane Tamer was designed to straighten the most unruly, thick textured hair without having to risk damaging your hair with extra heat. Whether you use it on damp or dry hair, it'll straighten and shine with just one swipe (although it works better on dry hair).

Like the rest, this flat iron heats up quickly to your desired temp. While the larger 1.75" plates make it faster, they aren't consistent about leaving your hair super smooth and shiny.

How to Use an Ionic Hair Straightener

  1. First, wash and dry your hair. Some straighteners let you straighten your hair while it's damp, but it's better for your hair to do it dry.
  2. Protect your hair by applying heat protectant. See below for my recommendation.
  3. Turn your flat iron on and turn it to the right temperature for your hair. If you've never straightened your hair, or if it's been a while since you last straightened it, use a lower heat setting. Generally, the thicker the hair, the hotter the heat. For fine hair, keep the temperature below 360°F. Wavy hair can handle 360°F and 380°F. And if your hair is thick, coarse or extra curly, try to stay between 380°F and 410°F.
  4. Separate your hair into sections. Generally, the thicker your hair, the smaller the sections. Start with the bottom hair and work your way up. For each section, comb it, then clamp the iron as close to your scalp as you can and run the straightener all the way to the tips. Once the iron touches your hair, make sure it's always moving. Holding it in one spot will cause heat damage.

ALWAYS Use Heat Sealer!!

It's your job to protect your hair!

Heat cooks. That's it's job. If you epose water to heat, the water will eventually boil away. If you expose a plump juicy grape to prolonged heat, you'll have a dry, shriveled up raisin. And if you expose your hair to too much heat, you'll end up with dry, brittle hair with split ends.

Although these ionic hair straighteners were designed to straighten hair without causing damage, nothing is foolproof. Every time you expose your hair to heat, you run the risk of damage. Minimize that risk by using a heat protectant on your hair every time you use your flat iron.

I Recommend Argan Oil

I can't say enough about how awesome Argan Oil is. Seriously! It's one of the few hair products I consider an actual necessity. I even started massaging it into my husbands hair and now he demands I do it everyday. lol.

HSI Professional Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioner, 2 Ounce
HSI Professional Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioner, 2 Ounce

There are many different brands of Argan Oil but this is the one I use.

I originally started using it because of it's high rating and positive reviews on Amazon.

I keep using it because I love what it does to my hair.

As I'm massaging it in, I can literally feel my hair getting softer. And when I use my straightener on it, I know I don't need to worry about heat damage.

After my hair is dry, I massage in a bit more oil and this gives me the shine that drives my husband crazy.

My hair is already straight, but I use an ionic dryer. It's good to see the prices coming down on these. I bought a set of tourmaline clam shell clips for a gift and it was over $100 for the set.

I have a hair straightener that has an mp3 player in it. I don't use it but it does have one. I like these ionic hair straighteners, they work great without frying your hair too bad. I had my hair chemically straightened a year ago and it's still holding. It's sort of like a reverse perm I guess. It was expensive though, I only paid $140 but it goes all the way up to $300 in some salons so I think an ionic hair straightener would be a better investment. Hair grows out and the chemical straightening doesn't last anyway.

Since I have never had one curl on my head, I won't have any need for one of these Ionic Hair Straighteners but I have some friends who would enjoy reading this so I will share with them. I wish I did have just one curl right in the middle of my forehead
