UV Tattoos - Want A Black Light Tattoo?

Updated on October 30, 2014

UV Tattoos - The Tattoo Trend That's Here To Stay

So what's the story with UV Tattoos?

Popular with clubbers and rock stars alike, the black light tattoo is definitely different.

Are they safe?

Is there a special process?

Do they last?

Find out everything you need to know about the growing trend in the tattoo world.

Are UV Tattoos Safe?

When UV Tattoos first appeared on the scene, there was much debate about the chemical effects of ultraviolet ink.

The questions asked were valid, but happily,

There is no cause for concern.

UV inks ARE safe.

Chameleon Body Art Supply have been supplying FDA (U S Food and Drug Administration) approved UV tattoo inks for the last decade, and have reported no cases of ill effects.

Good quality UV tattoo ink is "microencapsulated" which means the ink molecules are encased in microscopic containers, a bit like a gel coated paracetamol pill. Because the ink is encased it doesn't actually contact the skin.

What's The Difference?

When it comes down to the actual tattooing, uv tattoos are slightly different to a regular inking.

Blacklight tattoo ink is generally thinner than normal tattoo ink, so this makes the tattooists job a little harder.

Care must be taken by the tattooist not to over irritate the skin being tattooed. If the skin is irritated too much, the ink can sometimes not react as it should once the healing process has finished.

When using lighter colored UV tattoo inks, some tattoo artists will work under black light to make things easier.

White UV ink is virtually invisible on light skin tones under normal light, with only a very minor scarring from the actual tattooing itself.

So How Much Does A UV Tattoo Cost?

Regardless of what anyone tells you, tattooing using UV ink is an acquired skill.

The tattooist has to take extra care when tattooing, and work most of the time under black light.

There is also the fact that tattooists with a solid track record of UV tattoos are few and far between.

All this equals: UV tattoos will cost more money.

Figure on paying at least 40% more than a regular tattoo, sometimes a little more.

Do Your Research

If you are thinking of getting any kind of tattoo, it pays to do your research.

This applies even more so when it comes to UV tattoos.

Tattooing using uv ink is something that requires plenty of skill, the ink is harder to work with and needs practice. There are tattooists that will do them, and some that won't.

Do your research and find a tattooist with a good track record of black light tattoos.

These inks are NOT FDA approved for tattoo use. There are NO FDA approved tattoo inks. The UV inks have been FDA approved for use in agriculture, not in humans. There are no long-term studies involving UV inks used for tattoos, and they can discolor if exposed to too much sunlight, which can make the white UV ink turn yellowish brown. While they look amazing, there are many other things to consider.
