WEN vs Hair One?

Updated on January 26, 2014

WEN or HAIR ONE-Cleansing Conditioner

Have you seen the infomercials for the product WEN by Chaz Dean? WEN is a cleansing conditioner that takes the place of both your shampoo and conditioner. This product is different than shampoo. It doesn't lather up like traditional shampoos. Hair One is a more affordable alternative to WEN.

Both of these products are sulfate free, which means there are no harsh detergents that strip hair of its moisture and color. It adds shine and strengthens your hair. It cleanses and conditions the hair at the same time. It can be used as a leave in conditioner as well. This type of product is thereby, eliminating the need for several different products.

The directions are pretty much based on the length of your hair. You are to use a certain amount of pumps for the different areas of your head, such as the sides of your hair, the nape of your neck, or the top of your scalp. Then take a wide-toothed comb and comb the conditioner through to the ends of your hair, leaving it set on your hair while you continue your shower. When you are done, rinse the conditioner and apply one pump as a leave in conditioner.

I have had the opportunity to try both and will let you know my opinions on each below.

WEN by Chaz Dean

WEN comes in several different conditioners. There is Sweet Almond Mint which is a universal conditioner for all hair types. Cucumber aloe is also universal, but especially good for oily scalps and dry hair.

Fig, which is my personal favorite, is targeted for wavy to curly, coarse and ethnic type hair. It's fantastic for dry, chemically damaged, color treated, and heat damaged hair. It provides so much moisture that my hair feels soft and silky.

Tea Tree is especially good for medium to coarse hair with dry, flaky, scalp issues. For all you moms with children in school, I use this on my girls' hair because I read somewhere on the net that tea tree oil was a preventative measure for lice. Every time I hear of an outbreak of head lice, I make sure to have some handy. Lavender is great for moisturizing and adding volume to hair.

Another conditioner by WEN is the Pomegranate. This is one I have not tried, but it supposed to be fabulous for adding moisture without weighing the hair down or stripping it of natural oils. If you have tried the Pomegranate I would love to hear your thoughts below.

Wen has come out with a new summer fragrance, Mango Coconut. I haven't tried this one either, but have heard it smells fantastic. The fall pumpkin ginger scent smells wonderful but doesn't condition my hair as well as fig.

Along with the different conditioners to choose from, there are different sizes as well. A 16 oz. bottle of WEN sells for about $28. The 32 oz. can be found for $44. That is quite a bit for one product, but this definitely does work. If you watch QVC, you can periodically catch specials for the 1 gallon size of your favorite Wen Conditioner.

Chaz Dean has introduced the new WEN KIDS conditioner on QVC. The conditioners are geared towards kids favorite scents. These scents include apple, strawberry, banana and watermelon. I know that my daughter already likes Wen products, but with these appealing scents she is going to drive me crazy for Wen products.

Hair One

Well, for almost every pricey product on the market, there is someone who tries to come up with a cheaper alternative. Hair One seems to be the comparison product for WEN. I actually heard about this while I was at a QVC Beauty Bash. Women were talking about how much they love WEN but couldn't always afford it. Hair One is the same concept, a cleansing conditioner with no sulfates or harsh detergents. It gently cleanses the hair and is used the same way WEN is used.

Hair One comes in a Tea Trea formula for dry scalps. It also comes in Olive Oil for dry, damaged hair. Cucumber is for normal hair, and Jojoba is especially formulated for color treated hair. A 12 oz. bottle sells for $10.50 to $12. This is significantly cheaper than WEN. I tried this product and found it to be comparative to WEN in terms of conditioning my hair. You may also check your local beauty supply stores to see if they carry Hair One.

My Trick

Every 2-3 weeks, my hair starts to feel weighed down and heavy from the conditioning. I wash my hair with regular shampoo and condition with wen/hair one afterwards. Then I continue only using the cleansing conditioners until I notice the need for shampoo again.

I am an avid WEN user but like most I have been looking for alternatives or even combinations that live up to wen. HAIR ONE is amazing! I love it and will never buy wen again. My hair is thick, long and frizzy and wen made it soft and beautiful. But I must say that HAIR ONE has made it feel the same. Thank you SALLY’s..

      hello

    • anonymous 2 years ago

      'the real' Wen?

You mean there is something other than the expensive 'WEN' on the infomercials?

Yes it is RIDICULOUSLY over priced. It work

      s. Fake ? Real? HUH?

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Wen is much better. Hair One// A red flag ingredient in this cleanser is propylene glycol, which has been known to cause skin irritation, eczema, and other allergic reactions. I have no idea what this or any of the other unpronounceable ingredients have to do in a shampoo, but I know enough to stay away.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I love WEN but it is so expensive...I use a lot!!! I have a lot of fine wavy color treated hair that has a tendency to frizz ifeft Alo e...wen makes my hair shiny soft bouncy and not frizzy...I vet compliments on my hair a couple of times a week!! So it defo works....I am going to try the JoJoba ONE to compare as I have used WEN for years I'll know if it works.I love lavender ..pumpkin ...and sweet almond ...I did not like fig or white winter mint.....the fragrance was nauseating and my hair looked dull

    • anonymous 4 years ago

And...my hair is frizzy...and Wen tames it. It takes a while to figure things out...but I love the feel of my hair. No more horsehair...

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I've used Pom, Fig and Sweet Almond Mint. I have dry, colored hair and very, very long..medium and very wavy, curley hair that I blow dry and flat iron...and curl too. A T3 2i Lux and GHD is my go too. An old hot tools curler that I will replace if it every dies...which it hasn't. Pom is richer and creamier than the SAM even though both are supposed to be universal. SAM...doesn't do anything for my hair so the small container is just sitting in my bathroom. Pom is nice and creamy. I use Fig as well and both condition my hair well. You need to rinse very well and finish with cold water. I always mix my cleanses with FIG and Pom. The condition of my hair is better. I do deep treatments as well with argon oil. I haven't purchased remoist...as I would have to use the entire tube. Another plus is that I don't wash my hair as often and it stays cleaner longer. I discovered this on my own before reading that other people had the same experience. When I first used Wen, I didn't rinse it out well and my hair was oily. That's another experience many people have. I'm planning on buying a gallon of tee tree and fig in June..as I have a new Fig and Pom from my delayed qvc order. However, I can't go without fig. I only like the gallons because I would have to pump too much. I'll use 3 pumps for each cleanse with the gallons...sometimes 4. My husband and 2 of my 3 sons...come and use it too on occasion...so I need extra. BTW, I love the smell of FIG and Pom...and don't know how anyone complain. SAM...doesn't do anything for me. I'm buying a TT gallon..even though I never used it....unless the summer fragrance comes in a gallon in June...as a surprise. I doubt that I will try the kids formula as I don't think that it will have that conditioning formula for me.

Pomegranate is amazing from WEN. My hair has never been so shiny or so light and bouncy. I wasn't impressed with Fig myself but the pomegranate i and amazed by. I hate the price because I have very long, thick hair and use quite a bit. So, I have ordered Hair one and will tr it for the first time tonight. Fingers crossed that I'll like it. We'll see.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I have been using wen faithfully for over 2 years. I have over processed hair. I get Perms, yes, perms. I have my hair colored and highlighed - often. I have to say that without WEN my hair would be breaking off. Instead, I have strong healthy hair. I have 3 people I use for my hairstylists. Each one of them always compliment me on how great my hair is and how healthy it is.

    • chi kung 4 years ago

I don't use either - I tried several conditioners just to find my hair greasy and hard to comb through. So I don't use a conditioner any more just an organic shampoo and my hair looks healthy and shining :)

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      Loreal I mean!!!!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I hated the liberal versions. Love WEN. Interested in hair one to save some $$$!!!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Sally's also carries a sulfate free shampoo by Ion. It smells wonderful. I bought a bottle of the Ion after talking to my sister about Wen. Then for Christmas, I bought my sister and I the sample kit of Wen from QVC and we split it (I got the tea tree and the cucumber bottles) . I alternate between the two. Ion smells better and seems to lather a bit. I have not used as many pumps as Wen suggests because the little sample bottles would not last long. So far I have not noticed any help for my frizzy ends (not sure whether the frizz was caused by the color I put on my hair or my lack of vitamins after gastric surgery). Perhaps I have not noticed a difference because I am too cheap to use so many pumps! lol Will certainly try the Hair One, thanks for your blog.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I've been a WEN girl for a few years now. I use the pomegranate regularly and love the smell of it and I think it works great as a universal! I've used the Fig and love how thick that formula is and will order some as a treat for myself when I get tired of using my auto-delivered Sweet Almond Mint and Pomegranate. I've also used the Cucumber Aloe but prefer the other scents I've tried :) Before WEN I couldn't wear my hair down without blow drying it and sometimes even having to flat iron it to get it to look smooth. Since I've started using WEN I don't have to blow dry my hair at all and it dries straight and is so smooth and soft! I use a hand towel or paper towel(s) to pull the majority of the moisture out and brush it, it takes longer than it would to blow dry, but I love that I don't have to use the heated hair styling tools on my hair!! As long as I can afford it, I'll be getting WEN, but if I can't, I'll try the Olive Oil Hair One!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I like Wen, really like Wen. I am a natural "afro" hair girl, But I ran out and I wanted to see if there was another option. I usually order from QVC. Easy pay is the best.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I've used both and like the hair one just as much as the wen. Price difference for me makes the decision since both products are great for my hair which I color and is naturally dry and frizzy. And my hair product store even has a leave in conditioner like the wen product that is in the round contrainer. Hope this helps someone

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I have a much cheaper alternative to Wen which is just an ordinary shampoo and conditioner set- the new Palmolive Naturals line.

I am 16 yrs old and have normally shiny hair. Until right before puberty, I had the shiniest, silkiest and brownest hair ever- my hair was just like the Wen hair care models' and I felt I didn't need Wen to make my hair that shiny&perfect, cause it already was.

I decided to look for a standard hair care line that produces value hair products that I can use everyday to revive my shiny hair. I've tried Herbal Essence, Pantene, Sunsilk& Tresemme. I always thought Pantene was the best, back when my hair was super-awesome, but now I thought I needed to find a new hairline. I thought I'd give Palmolive a better try, which I used to think was good but not as good as Pantene.

The Palmolive Naturals line shampoo&conditioners are now my faves ever and I plan that they will be my everyday go-to as they are of a normal shampoo/conditioner price and give great hair results right from the first wash.

I don't think the end results for hair as good as the hair you get from Wen come as quickly or as 100% perfectly as it does with Wen but it's much more affordable and greater-valued. The first time you use Palmolive Naturals You just need the patience to use it everyday for a week and see the end results are almost as great as the results that Wen gives.

I strongly recommend you buy the shampoo&conditioners from the Palmolive Naturals line (around NZ$6 each which is VERY cheap whereas Wen is NZ$40 or something, comes in different colours/scents) if you are looking for a much, much cheaper (even cheaper than Hair One!) but great quality alternative to Wen!

It comes with a "GREAT HAIR GUARANTEED!" sticker which says that you can get your money back if you don't get results of beautiful hair :)

      P.S

I bought the Active Nourishment (green) set from the Palmolive Naturals line and it's great in smell and everything! :D

    • anonymous 4 years ago

wen is indeed the best ever

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I have tried Wen one and found it similar to DevaCurl No-Poo which I love. Wen was nice but a little more expencive than DevaCurl which I can go to the salon or Ulta to buy. I have tried the Sulfate free Loreal and while it smells nice it was horrible. I have thick naturally curly hair that tends to be dry and gets frizzy easily. I haven't found anything I can buy in a drug store and use.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I have heard so much talk about this "Hair One" and how it's the same as Wen but cheaper!! Well I'm a Wen user and I have never used a Cleansing product that is any better than Wen. I recently brought the "Hair One" and it is a lot thicker than the Wen so you have to add more water to your hair during your wash, smells like it has perfume, and it's a lot cheaper, drying my hair took a lot longer time then Wen and my hair wasn't as soft as with Wen. I would buy Hair One if I was low on money but would never leave Wen, and, I'm with Chaz Dean, if you go and pay $9.99 for your hair product you will get a $9.99 product. You pay for what you get, and I went rigt back to Wen!!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I got the Mango Coconut from WEN on a QVC special and I LOVE it. I never want to use shampoo again. My hair is fine and due to medicine it breaks badly lately, but since using WEN the breakage has decreased allot. No split ends so far and my hair color is not washing away. It is pricey though. That is the down side. You do save from not buying shampoo and conditioner and detangler and so on....but you have to use more WEN than shampoo to clean your hair, a quarter size drop in my hand won't cut it...if you have damaged hair and are looking for something to help it, you should take a look at the product commercial as it could help you

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Katie, there is alcohol in ALL of the Wen products. It's right there on the Chaz site. Click "Actual Ingredients." Both products use fatty alcohols-and I haven't seen a brand that didn't. It's what makes your hair feel smooth and silky. Oh, and both brands use the same alcohols. Educate yourself before you make "guesses."

    • anonymous 5 years ago

The only thing that bugs me is that the REAL Wen (google Chaz Dean, not Wen, and go to the products section on the website), not the trywen.com stuff, has absolutely no alcohols in it where as Hair One does. My hair is so fragile that I have never been able to use anything with harsh chemicals like that in it (I don't even dye it anymore!). A previous comment (from MJinFlorida) said that Hair One made her hair frizzy, I guarantee that's why. I'm curious to know which formula of Wen people are using when they are saying that the results are the same, I know Hair One has alcohols in it and I have not been able to try the real (non-infomercial) Wen, I did try some of the leftover from my mom-in-law of the fake infomercial stuff and liked it, but could feel how much the alcohol dried my hair out and I won't be using that again. All the reviews I've read from the real Wen seem to love it and can find no comparison on the market, at least within my price range!

    • anonymous 5 years ago

I tried the sulfate free L' Oreal products and they too remove the color from hair, I was disappointed in their product!

    • anonymous 5 years ago

I have been using Hair one for about a year. I like the olive oil and jojoba formulas especially. The benefits for me are faster drying times, easier comb outs and soft, moisturizer hair. I recently purchased WEN, the sweet almond formula and it mostly smells like menthol. My hair was harder to comb out and seems dryer than when using Hair one. Maybe I'll buy some jojoba oil and add to it. I'm sticking with Hair one. With the Sally's card, it's only $9.99. Plus I love that they have the packets which are great for travel. I've used the Loreal product too. It smells good but really tangled my hair. I have coarse African American hair. It's a little below the shoulder so the comb out ability is crucial for me. I don't want to spend 30 minutes combing out my hair.

    • anonymous 5 years ago

I just used Hair One today after a week of trying to decide if WEN was worth the cost. I figure why not go for the knock off first and see how it works. I am half caucasion and half black so my hair has been a challange my whole life. I used it right after putting a relaxer in to see if it would put some moisture back in and the end result was amazing. My hair feels soft and visibly more healthy. Using it as a leave in was nice too it didnt feel heavy or greasy it just works its way in. Because it doubles as a leave in I dont have to use as much curling gel or hairspray either!!

I have waist length hair so Wen is insane for my wallet! I use and love Hair One for dry hair. Affordable and the results are the same, soft shiny clean hair.

      • Maira 2 years ago

I tried both Products they're both good wen and hair one I like both of them

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Hair One has a new Argan Oil version out for curly hair, and it's exactly what I needed! Some people on Amazon complain about the smell, but I think it's lovely and it makes my scalp tingle. I've been growing out my natural hair for two and a half years, and once I finally chopped off enough of the relaxed stuff and stopped flat ironing, I struggled to find a hair routine that left me happy with my look each day. Now my curls are soft and bouncy, my hair is healthy and growing fast, and I get compliments from complete strangers! I don't think it gets much better.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Loreal's sulfate free products are awful! They dried my hair out and are worse than my shampoo with sulfate. My hairdresser even noticed my hair had become more flyaway. I will never buy a shampoo in a regular store-including their salon brands that are obviously NOT legit-but will buy in my salon.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

i started using hair one because i always wanted to try WEN but couldn't afford it. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! my hair was short when i started using it and im now growing it out do see what the difference is before i cut it. MY hair is colored purple and it kept the color in for over 2 months (i you color you know it comes out within a few weeks)! when i went to a wedding i let my mother borrow it and i used a regular shampoo. never again! before the wedding i went home and rewashed my hair in Hair One. I have told everyone to switch.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I have been using Hair One for several months now. At first it looked great for most of the day and then got greasy, but after about a month of consistent use, that calmed down and now I can wash it every other day or even every third day before it looks bad. My scalp is happy, my hair is shinny and has volume and my color doesn't fade. I really love it and you can't bet the price. WEN is just way to expensive for me to even consider using regularly.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Just tried Hair one tonight,it worked very well,as my hair had become dried out from too much protein.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I have always had wild and frizzy hair that never wanted to do what I wanted it to. Shampoo always made my scalp dry and itchy, and conditioner caused me to break out severely. I wasted so much money trying different shampoos/conditioners/hot oils/creams/goops and the list goes on. I even tried Loreal sulfate free products, which only left my scalp dry as usual and my hair was greasy after a short time of using it.

I saw ads for Wen on TV but I felt the price was too high and I was worried it wouldn't work. So when I was in Sally's(which are located practically everywhere) I saw "Hair One" and decided that the price was worth giving it a try.

I started using the tea tree version for dry scalp, it smells wonderful(I have since found all of the scents to be enjoyable), my wild, frizzy hairy was tamed after just the first use and continues to be extremely manageable. My scalp feels moisturized, I no longer have itchy flaky scalp. My hair is so shiny and soft. I never knew my normally dull brown hair could look so vibrant.

What a difference it has made. I will never use shampoo again!!! I recommend this product to anyone.

As for Wen, I still have not tried it, and I probably won't.

Before trying Wen, I would definitely recommend trying Hair One first, as it is so much cheaper.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I tried Wen and really liked it. After I ran out, I tried Hair One hoping that it would work as well as Wen. Not only was it less expensive, but easier to get since there seems to be a Sally Store in every strip mall in New Jersey. Used Hair One twice, and will not use again. While in the shower and applying the amount specified in the directions my hair became matted and hard to get the comb through. After rinsing, I could tell I needed to use conditioner on my hair. After blow drying, my hair felt like straw. Very disappointed, The old sayiing "you get what you pay for" really applies here. Going back to using Wen

      • anonymous 4 years ago

i use hair one its amazing! i have colored hair and was using many other products.. now i don't need to my hair is silky not greasy its really a wonderful thing.

for the take a side below i don't know what im choosing because theres no options just buttons.... but i definitely did my research i chose HAIR ONE!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I've been using WEN since 2007. I love how good my hair feels and looks but alas the price has me looking for a replacement. After reading reviews for Hair One and WEN comparisons I've decided to try Hair One.

To the reviewer who'd heard cancelling a WEN account was difficult I've left the WEN club once before (they kept making mistakes on my invoice) and didn't have any problems terminating the account. Many of the companies that offer kit clubs have aggressive / pushy sales reps but don't get drawn into the game of 'why' you're cancelling as they're trained to counter the common reasons people leave. Just tell them you want the account cancelled, end of discussion. WEN's club is tied to a debit/credit card so you can always contact your bank and make sure future charges are denied.

About my hair & hair habits: fine, color treated, long. I'm in my mid 40's & don't wash every day. Usually every other but occasionally every 2 when I don't have to leave the house!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Haven't tried the Wen, too expensive, but I have just started on Hair One Jojoba. Holy Cow, is this stuff great. My fine but thick hair is soft and full and bouncy.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I wanted to buy the 100 dollar wen kit , but i kept on reading about how they make it so hard to cancel your membership that i was scared they would charge me another shipment before i could cancel. I then found out about hair one and i love it! i use the argon oil one for curly hair , but i have frizzy dry and curly hair and that one product works fine for all! the one downside is i don't really like the smell of it , im sure the cucumber one smells great but the one for curly hair doesn't smell that good. other then that it's a great product!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I have been using Hair One for more than a year and loved the results.

This summer they changed it, does not work as well anymore. Seems that it was made cheaper and thinner, whereas it used to be nice and thick. Its silkier and less conditioning. Can't see anything better about it, only that they are making it cheaper to make more money. Looking to order Wen now.

Think I will change to Wen now.

I get my hair highlighted touch up every 6 weeks and hair was getting really dry due to age and highlighting. Started using Wen 2 years ago . Hair stylist was very optimistic ,always saying something about Wen. My last appointment she said your hair looks and feels great. What are you using? Still just Wen. My sister and another friend ask if I had extensions put in cause hair is getting so full and long. I will always use Wen. Did I say I'm 51 years old ?

I have used Wen, and I love how it makes my hair feel. I have really long hair and ended up going through their 3 month supply in 1 1/2 months. It gets pricey and I can't afford it. Rite Aid had their knock off called Ren. It works the same way, but didn't come close on making my hair feel the same. Wen's Pomegranate is their worst scent, IMO. It reminds me of cough syrup. Does Hair One make your hair feel like you washed it with Wen? I would be willing to give it a shot if I got some decent feedback on it.

@anonymous: Qvc runs good specials and is only $40 for 2 bottles instead of $30 each.

I almost always use Nuka Chamomile Vanilla Leave in Conditioner and Detangler Conditioner! It really helps my hair get back its smoothness and sheen that has been greatly missed! My split ends have disappeared and I now have my mother using this product!

I have never used Wen, actually the price turned me off so I found out about hair one online.

I found it at Sally's and cost about 12 dollars, less than half the price of Wen.

I tried the olive oil formula for dry hair, while I love the mint in it , my hair still feels dry. I started using a conditioner after cleansing with hair one, but I believe that hair one is drying out my hair!!!

I really wanted this to be the miracle my hair needed but it is not.

Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and try Wen!

Haven't tried either yet, but I'm leaning toward a Hair One experiment (mostly because the horses have eaten all my money ;o) This lens is timely and informative, and gave me some additional things to think about. Nice job!

I haven't tried HairOne so I can't say which was better for me. However, I have tried Wen and I love it! I couldn't remember the last time my hair was so so soft.

I have used WEN Lavender for about 3 months and had good results, but the thought of a product with similar performance at a lower price intrigued me. I purchased a sample-size packet of Hair One at Sally Beauty yesterday and used it this morning. My hair felt as clean as when using WEN, and the Jojoba fragrance was nice. I did feel that my hair was more "fuzzy" with Hair One (I live in humid southwest Florida), and had to use a flat iron product to smooth it down. It took a few weeks for my hair to adjust to WEN (and for me to learn how to use it properly) so perhaps my hair wouldn't be as fuzzy after a few more uses of Hair One. For the price it's a good alternative to WEN, but for results (and if price is no object) WEN gave me better results.

Interesting! I just saw the WEN infomercial this past weekend. The photos looked very convincing, but I'm always skeptical of TV products, so it's good to hear a real-life confirmation. Now that I understand a little more how it works, it really makes sense. When I was growing out my hair I visited a forum site called the Long Hair Community, and the chicks on there were always raving about conditioner only washing and the other condition/wash/condition regime, which models supposedly use to remove hair styling products. Anyway, a bottle of silicone-free Sauve is definitely a cheap, cheap alternative although it cannot be used as a leave in.

P.S. Just wanted to say thanks for commenting on my lens!

I haven't used Wen but I have hair one and I am sold!!! I love the stuff and plan on going back to Sally's to purchase all of them (I have the olive oil now). I Still use Shampoo every once in a while because I have certain shampoos for clarifying and protein, but when I get ready to flat iron or wear my hair straight it will be hair one for now on!!!!! I love HAIR ONE!!!!!!!!!! My hair was so silky and soft!

I have wen but have never heard of hair one! I will have to try it. I love WEN once in a while but can't use it to often or my hair seems to come out in clumps! Thanks for the great lens! I will be looking into hair one!

I recently purchased Hair One Jojoba formula and I love it. My hair feels clean, soft, and is super shiny! I will not go back to regular shampoos, because they left my hair feeling dry and brittle.

Hi, I will look for the product in our stores, here in Africa. Unfortunately we don't get all the good stuff that I read about on Squidoo but maybe this time I/m lucky. Keep well! Congrats on your trophy!
