What are the Best Shampoos for Gray Hair

Updated on August 9, 2015

It's Not Just the Color that's Different

Gray hair doesn't just look different. It feels different.

Without the colored pigments it is more porous and more wiry.

It more easily absorbs contaminants like cigarette smoke which can leave it looking yellow and brassy. Even sunshine can affect the color of your hair. That's why it's important to wear a hat on sunny days.

That's why it's important to use products that are specially designed for gray or graying hair.

Choosing the Right Products for Gray Hair

Have you ever noticed someone with beautiful gray hair?

Chances are, it was the beautiful shine that caught your attention.

These products are designed to enhance that shine, while removing dullness and yellowing.

The best news is that you don't have to pay more to get these shampoos and conditioners.

They are priced similar to other hair care products.

Best Shampoos for Gray Hair

Look for shampoos designed to deep clean away contaminants and impurities leaving your hair healthy and shiny.

Many of these shampoos have a blue or violet tinge to reverse yellowing of the hair, but don't worry, you won't end up with a blue tinge in your hair.

Best Conditioners for Gray Hair

Don't forget a great conditioner designed for gray hair. You may find your hair is thinner and dryer and the right conditioner can really help. As with shampoo, look for a product that is designed for gray, silver or white hair.

Control GX

What if You're Not Quite Ready for Gray?

You can, of course, dye your hair. I gave up dyes. They were harsh and the gray-white roots looked terrible.

Still, I wanted my hair just a little darker. I decided to try a new product called Control GX, Here's how it works. You just shampoo as usual and you hair gets slowly and subtly darker. You can alternate it with your regular shampoo as you get closer to the color you want.

The best thing is that it does not ever get rid of all the gray, which means it looks natural. I can see that my hair is a little darker which looks better against my very pale skin. However, non of my friends and co-workers have noticed.

If I had gone with a dye, it would have been too drastic a change. With Control GX there are never any visible roots. It's a great alternative to dyes.

This product is marketed for men, but works great on women.
