Why My Campers are Berry Bootiful!

Updated on October 21, 2013

Last Spring I bought a special pair

of all purpose leather casual boots for a special purpose, and they are equally perfect for cool Fall and Winter days.

After a Summer off in the closet they are on my feet again, and feeling fine.

Equally at home with jeans and casual skirts,

they replaced my leather MBT walking shoes - you know, the ones with the curved soles, that are modeled after Masai walking styles. I wrote about them Pain Relief Shoes. I've worn the same pair of MBTs for seven years now, for walking for exercise on paved paths or sidewalks and they really add a lift to my step.

But this year's plan is to find some acreage in the country

and that means walking on uneven ground. Even though I've worn the curvy soled shoes during balance exercises at my chiropractor's office (read about that here Chiropractic Joy, and see some of my artwork in the office gallery), it's risky to traipse around pastures and rutted drives in anything less than stable shoes.

First I ordered my standby favorite Earth Shoes,

a modern gray lace-up reminiscent of the hightop basketball shoes that were in style in the late 50s. A gray shoe, the ankle support looks just right for my project, but they were a no-go, and easily returned to Amazon. A little more browsing and up popped the Camper Cami Berry colored ankle boots.

They are a sure fit with skirts and any type of pants,

and the color is subtle enough to double for a neutral. I ordered a size 40 to fit my size 9.5 feet, but they were just too short, and Amazon sent the courier to pick them up the next day, after I ordered the size 41. Soon after they arrived I was wearing them in great comfort.

The first thing I noticed was the quality

of the leather and tailoring of the sole to the shoe. A slide suede wraps around the sides of the boot, while the top of the toes is marked by a textured smoother leather. So, there's a little light play on the suede and the surface is interesting to look at. One look and you'll recognize the craftsmanship.

Stability is enhanced by the flat sole

which also has texturing on the sides. Although the boots are great for walking on wet ground they are even better than my hiking boots because they don't have deeply carved gripping soles that can trap mud and then track it into the car or around the house. My Campers are easy to wipe off on a grassy lawn or doormat.

Campers are designed for a narrower foot,

and that's a real plus for me, because the Earth shoes were entirely too wide. Finding just the right shoe for my narrow foot can be a tiring challenge, so when I read review after review remarking on the slim fit I was ready to place my order.

Notice the lacing, a nice little touch

that gives an upbeat style to the pair. One lace is knotted at the bottom and again at the top. No tying necessary! For easy putting on and removing there's a handy zipper on the inner side. That's valuable to any home shopper who's in an out of several homes in one day. Did you notice that most homes these days require the visitor to remove their shoes at the door. Well, the zipper makes that easy.

I wore these boots Spring into Summer and now early Fall,

and clearly, they'll be versatile for many events even in Winter. Celebrate with me because my house hunting trips are about to begin. My ankles are covered from cold winds, and even though the fit is slim there's plenty of room for the socks that normally cover my bare feet, but if you're a bare tootsie gal, there's plenty of cushioning in the footbed and comfort all round.

Even Strangers Compliment Me on the Boots,

the last one was an elderly lady (80s at least) sitting in a waiting room, but teens and their moms also love them. Impressing others was the farthest thing from my mind as I made my purchase, but these boots are sure a conversation starter.

If I didn't already have a pair of flat black leather waterproof boots I'd go for these, with their sporty red buttons.

Of course my choice would be the black boots with yellow piping trim around the sole and yellow buttons - they come in 4 color choices. I'm a real fan of boots.

If you're a bare footie then these might be your favorite boot because of their fluffy lining. Reviewers comment that people also ask them what brand the boots are.

@DebMartin: Me too, Deb, I was surprised to receive the actual shoes and get a feel for their quality because the brand seemed like a misnomer, but now I'm convinced they're going to look and feel good for a very long time.

I've never heard of them. At first I was thinking I was going to a lens about those homes you pull behind your vehicle. lol. But I like these boots a lot. And they make great sense for my environment.

How did I not know about these cute and comfortable boots? I would love a pair. Like you, I have a tough time fitting my narrow feet. These look perfect for my lifestyle. Love the color you selected. Thanks for introducing me to Camper boots. Appreciate your review.

Those boots are made for more than walkin' - I don't (yet) have Camper Boots but I think they look stylish and comfy.
