Top 10 SEO Tips for Your Website

Updated on December 4, 2011

Raise Your Website Rankings With These Simple SEO Techniques

Quality Content

Write your content for your target audience. Give your readers what they want to know. Quality content is rated highly by the search engines so make sure the content on your website is unique and useful to your audience. Consider adding extra elements such as reviews and comments by your users, positive feedback and testimonials also rate highly with search engines and do a lot to build your credibility and SEO rankings.

Keywords

Keywords are commonly known as search terms and these are words and phrases that users will type into the search engine in order to search for a specific product / service or information on a particular topic. An example is “dog collars” or “out of print books”, or “home cures for sinusitis”. When you write the copy for your website, be sure to insert some of these common search terms into your copy, including into your headings and your links. Google uses keywords to determine the relevancy of your content. If you aren’t sure what keywords are appropriate for your site, Google has a handy keyword tool to help you.

Title Tag

The title tag goes into the heading section of your HTML code. It is called a meta tag and Google uses it for SEO purposes to determine what your page is about. So in the dog collar example, one of your website page titles could be <title>Female Dog Collars, Leads and Harnesses</title>. This shows the search engines (and the reader of your page) what they can expect to find on this particular page. All page titles should be unique per page.

Description Tag

The description tag is also a meta tag and goes in the HTML header below the title tag. The page description is just that – It describes to the user and the search engines what information is on that particular page. It should be unique per page, be informative and contain relevant keywords. An example would be <meta name="description" content="Female dog collars, leads and harnesses for whippets and greyhounds>

Headings

One way Google determines the content on the page is by looking at the page’s headings. The <h1> - main heading, <h2> and <h3> - subheading tags prioritize the site’s content. It’s important to use these on your web pages to increase your SEO.

Build Trust

Would you give your credit card to a stranger without checking his credentials first? No way! So to this effect your website has to portray the image that you are trustworthy. Make sure if you process payments of any kind that your site is secure and that it says so. You can prove this by having a reputable e-commerce validator check your site and stamp it with their seal of approval. Other ways to build trust in your brand is through client testimonials and feedback, positive reviews from other vendors, any affiliations or associations you may have that will build your credibility as a vendor or an information provider in your industry.

Links

Links are powerful ways to drive traffic to your site and to establish a higher ranking on the search results pages. Inbound links from reputable websites will enhance your ranking, while links from low ranking or dodgy sites will lower your ranking. So always try to link to your site from other high quality sites. Examples of worthy sites are review sites, analysis and discussion, forums, user feedback, blog discussions, social media sites, video content sites etc.

Internal links should encourage navigation throughout the site, leading users to internal pockets of information relevant to their search terms.

Site architecture

The structure of your site must be crawlable so that Google can easily index each page of your website. It’s important to link to all internal areas so that users and search engines can explore all the content you provide.

Broken Links

This is an absolute no-no. Broken links will prevent the search engines from crawling your site effectively, and they make you look unprofessional while driving away your site users (read potential clients). Make sure you have no broken links in your site, that all your pages exist and that you have a user-friendly navigation system to get around your site.

Social Networking

It’s a good idea to set up a Facebook, Twitter or other social networking page for your business as a way of getting users to share information about you. This not only drives extra traffic to your website, but it acts as a valuable source of inbound links too. Social media links on your site show Google that your site is worth sharing, and this contributes to a higher ranking on the search engine results pages.

      Hi Kyoutohru,

Social networking is a great way to generate interest in your brand and provide inbound links to your website, thereby contributing to a higher page rank. Links from social media sites are noted by the search engines. If your site is worth sharing, it must be useful and relevant. That is how the search algorithms 'think'.
