5.1 Computer Speakers

When discussing 5.1 computer speakers the 5.1 refers to the number of speakers that the system is made up of. In this case it is a total of 6 speakers.

With a 5.1 speaker system you get two front speakers, two rear speakers, a center speaker and a sub-woofer. Although many claim that having a set of 5.1 speakers for your computer is going a bit overboard and that 2.1 computer speakers are enough for good sound quality. This may be true, however some people want that true surround sound for when they are playing their favorite games, watching movies or just listening to music.

When it comes to the differences between 2.1 speaker systems and 5.1 speaker systems, besides the fact that 5.1 speakers have more speakers which create true surround sound, the main difference you will notice is the price. 5.1 Computer speakers are going to cost you a little more. However this does not mean you have to go broke to get yourself a set of 5.1 speakers. In fact it is possible to find these speaker systems for under $100.

Although the sound quality is not going to be as good on the less expensive 5.1 speaker systems you will find they are more than adequate. If all you are looking for is the surround sound capabilities then this is just fine but if you want the best sound you can get then you are going to be looking at spending at least $150 or more.

One of the great things about 2.1 computer speakers and 5.1 computer speakers is the fact that with some of the models you will find you can actually use your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad and other devices with. Additionally, with the 5.1 speakers you can hook them up to your television to get true surround sound from more than just your computer. This benefit often times makes it worth spending the extra money to get a high quality system.

Below you are going to find some of the best 5.1 computer speakers that are on the market right now. You will find both systems that cost under $100 and systems that cost more than $100 so you will have a good selection of speakers to choose from.

I should mention that there are not really a lot of 5.1 computer speakers available, most 5.1 speakers you will find are geared more towards being part of a home theater system and require a receiver to use. All the models listed here to not need a receiver and can be hooked up directly to your computer.

In My Opinion

When I am watching a movie, playing music or playing a game on my computer I like BIG sound. This is the main reason I chose to go with a 5.1 computer speaker system. When it came to making a choice about which system to get I went right for the Logitech Z906. I have owned other Logitech speakers in the past and have always found them to be top notch speakers so it was very easy for me to go for the Z906 system.

Of course this is one of the most expensive 5.1 computer speaker systems found today. In my opinion the high cost is well worth it. We also own the Cyber Acoustics CA-5402 Platinum Series which is connected to my girlfriend's computer. She is not the audio buff that I am so didn't need a system with so much power. although we are very satisfied with the speakers The difference in sound between the two systems is very noticeable.

If you are looking for a basic system that isn't going to cost you an arm and a leg then any of the systems shown here will do the trick, however if you want something with incredible sound then the Logitech Z906 system is definitely the way to go.

Which Are Right For You

If you think that owning 5.1 computer speakers is a bit to much for you and your computer then you might want to take a look at some different 2.1 computer speakers. You can find a great review and information on 2.1 speakers one this lens The only problem that really exists with using 5.1 speakers over 2.1 speakers is the amount of space they take up. If you have a small desk or little space to place speakers around your computer then a 2.1 speaker system might be a better choice.

I do love surround sound but I do think that a 2.1 set of speakers is more than fine for desktop speakers.
