90 by 50: Donald Trump, Mark Cuban, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet Save the World

Updated on April 17, 2015

Reality Television Saves the World

The world can be saved via reality television. Especially if that reality TV show is sponsored and hosted by the likes of Donald Trump, Mark Cuban, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. It’s guaranteed can’t miss television. And the product to be sold? Why the answer to all economic, energy and pollution problems of course. You would expect no less if you got that many billionaires in one place. If you could get some other billionaires like George Soros and the Koch brothers to participate the production would be even better.

90% By 2050

The driving forces to carry this off could be several. One is known as the 90 by 50 campaign. In this campaign the goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of big cities like New York City by 90% by the year 2050 largely though retrofitting buildings in urban areas with more efficient and energy saving technologies.

Go to Town

There would be two instances of the next project. In the first instance an existing southwestern city is systematically taken off the grid. All its energy needs are to be met with renewable sources—especially solar. In addition all electric motors in devices such as elevators would be replaced by more efficient ones. Building insulation would be brought up to the highest practical standard as would windows and electrical wiring. Even things like clothes dryers, refrigerators and washing machines could be replaced.

In the second instance, a town is built out in the southwest from scratch by a bunch of university students. It must be green from the ground up. After they finish building it, they must live in it. So if they put in some weird sort composting eco toilets that stink all the time, they will have to live with it. All kinds of options could be tried depending on terrain and resources. For instance, an attempt might be made to put individual houses or whole neighborhoods underground.

Military Industrial Complex

An honorable mention idea is one or several military bases. This might take so many permission slips from the federal government as a whole, the DOD in particular, the branch of the military in question and finally the base commander that it would take to long to accomplish. But if all those hoops can be jumped through by say: signing statements and executive orders, it might be doable. Since a military base is like a city, 90 by 50 technologies should apply. Make that base efficient!

Nuclear Desalination

Depending on time, funding and permits other projects could be tried. For instance, a long term solution to California’s water woes could be Nuclear Desalination. Get together various teams of university students or various companies to compete to generate a working plan to either dot California’s coast, or fill California’s deserts with nuclear power plants for desalination. Get some alternative thinkers who think they can prove that solar desalination plants are better and let them prove it. The plans must include everything from pumping the salt water from the ocean, to getting permits and approvals, building the energy plants, disposal of waste and hazardous materials, storing and transporting the clean water, etc.

99 Problems

The beauty of running a realty show like this is that problems are a good thing. Problems create the drama required to keep the viewers. Every time a solution is found to a problem it has the potential for fixing problems all around the world.

This is a way to get city managers and governors and even the federal government to think of more efficient ways to run their own institutions.

Capitalism vs Communism

No matter how much the radical left might wish it, capitalism does not need to be destroyed to save the world. The now defunct Soviet Union and the very existence of North Korea show us that at least some of the alternatives are not very palatable at all. We very much can build our way out of our problems. We have the wealth and technology to do so. And oh by the way there will be plenty of jobs for all in doing this. All we lack is the political will.

Another benefit of running reality in this way is that people will be able to see in real time how to create jobs and an economy that work by making the pie bigger rather than by redistributing existing wealth so that everyone become equally poor.

John I will have to remember that Twain quote. It would explain many things.

Always remember what Mark Twain said, "If voting made any difference, the politicians wouldn't let us do it."

A businessman running amerika like a business - will never happen.

      It's like "military intelligence".

      Cheers

Sheila I just think it would be nice if the media circus that gets insisted on did us some good for once. You would think they could make good, dramatic reality TV from a drought.

You have some really interesting ideas here! Of course, with this bunch of the super rich, you not only have an unlimited source of funding but large egos for drive. This may actually get things accomplished!

Hello Peggy. I am all for people spending their own money in ways they see fit. It just so happens that there are things that can benefit everyone as well as the children of the wealthy so I hope some of them wind up funding such things. Since I am a capitalist I hope they make a buck off it too!

Warren Buffet and other billionaires around the world have pledged to give most of their vast fortunes away instead of passing the majority of it down to family members. Some have begun giving it away while still alive like Bill Gates through his foundation and others will do so upon their death. Nice to know that so much good can come from the vast accumulations of wealth that some people have amassed. Much good can come of it! Their numbers are growing every day and they come from all countries. Nice to know!

Marlene I am hoping that it would indeed be must see TV and that some real problems would actually get solved as well.

I am just trying to imagine what it would be like if we could gather a bunch of billionaires together. Now, THAT's a reality show I would watch!

Thanks for commenting FlourishAnyway. I am hoping that the egos of the rich and famous will take over. Surely any billionaire would love to take credit for saving the world!

I can't imagine the Koch brothers being interested in helping the environment, but I do like your notion.

Hello Peggy. I like the idea of appealing to the egos of the rich and famous to solve problems. One of the difficulties we can have when we wait for government to solve problems is that actually solving problems is not on their agenda. They are more about getting re-elected or filling their campaign war chest or exchanging political favors. On the other hand, if Donald Trump was actually able to solve the California water crisis there would be no shutting him up!

California may be facing a worse water shortage than usual because the snow mass up in the mountains is at an all time low this year. Your ideas written tongue in cheek, I assume, just could work! Up, useful and funny votes...the latter for the stinky toilets, etc. The tango dance of big business and government will continue to gyrate, twist and turn. You are correct in that a crisis often spearheads real solutions!

Hello Laurel. I imagine the real reasons why something isn't done are complex. Some of the obvious excuses we will be given are cost and environmental impact. I think the real reason is the "right" people are not getting rich off the deal. I think there is more political influence and more bribery involved than some would readily admit.

There is another thing to consider too. California is being led by people who admire European socialism. For people who believe in socialism, real solutions, especially real solutions that would actually work are worse than useless. It has been famously said that one should never let a crisis go to waste. Those who want America to be a more socialist nation need a crisis to force us into socialism. A water shortage would be one dandy crisis. The only answer they will allow is the one that gives government more control over the day to day existence of the citizenry.

These ideas intrigue me. For example, I've wondered for many years why the USA does not desalinate ocean water. Too difficult? Too expensive? Interesting topics here.
