A Facebook Nightmare

The message that comes up after I make about 10 friend requests
The message that comes up after I make about 10 friend requests

A lot of my friends have been following my 10 day battle with Facebook. So I decided to share with the rest of the world.

I opened the account under Elisa Black-Taylor because I'm a freelance photojournalist and want to promote my writing. I have a page at Facebook allows me to gather animal loving friends and I can post my new stories to my profile as soon as they go online. I've also started the Elisa Black-Taylor Readers Forum. So far no problems on that page and I can send mass messages.

Everything went fine the first few days. I was making friends right and left and having a great time. After a few days of sending friend requests I got a warning that I should significantly slow down because I was showing signs of abusive behavior. So I stopped sending requests for the night. The next day I began sending more requests. Again the same message came up. This was on Wednesday of last week. Ten days ago. This is the day my Facebook page turned into a nightmare.

I was able to send messages to the friends I already had and ask them to get me friend requests as I couldn't send any out. My friends have been wonderful with this.I had over 500 friend suggestions at this point and couldn't do anything with them. Nor could I message anyone I'm not friends with. I wrote to Facebook about this problem and got a response the next day suggesting I read the terms,

Guess what folks? We're only supposed to send friend requests to those we know. End of subject.

Then on Sunday my account was totally frozen and I couldn't even get to my profile page without confirming through a cell phone number. My account is with Alltel and they're not on the list of mobile providers. I tried Verizon since Alltel is in with them in some areas. No luck. So my daughter allowed me to use her phone number and got my account back online.

YAY! I could send friend requests so I sent a few. Maybe 5-6. Then I remembered all of the friend suggestions waiting on me so I went to those and started clicking. The next thing I knew I was blocked from accepting those.

So I contacted Facebook-again. And they got back to me and told me there are no blocks on my account.

This was through email as there's NO live tech support for Facebook. I'm really irritated at this point. I'm sending my story to local news stations and several nation shows. I'm not the only one with these problems. Several people have told me of friends who were totally removed from Facebook with no warnings. Here's a copy of the email I sent them today. Apparently Facebook thinks its OK to remove a persons life without warning.

STILL BLOCKED FROM SENDING REQUESTS. WHEN WILL BLOCK BE LIFTED???????????Since you say I'm not blocked then what is this???????????????????????????????????????You haven't seen abusive behavior. A copy of this is going to the Today Show and also the Better Business Bureau and Merchant Circle. And thank you for my next story. Its going to be called "Why does Facebook promote friendship and punish you when you try to make friends. I'll send you the link on Sunday when it runs."

Elisa Black-Taylor

So far I haven't heard back from this one. I'm including the screen photo I made with my cell phone of the warning I get.

The latest problem (as if the others aren't enough) is I can't make comments on the wall of many of my friends. Facebook asks to verify my account by cell phone. DUH!!! Already done that on Sunday. They must be brain dead.

I'm a writer. I want a lot of friends. My friends are coming thru for me and getting others to send me requests. But this is crazy. Why does a social network not want a person to make friends? If all of you took off every friend you've never met or knew, how many friends will that leave you. Mine would be around 25 instead of the 1200 I have.

MySpace doesn't treat social networkers the way Facebook has me. I can send tons of friend requests. I did reach their limit one day and that was after 500 or more requests. The next day I was free to continue with my networking. So I'm afraid MySpace is a much better option for me now than Facebook. Which is sad, because I LOVE Facebook. MySpace has the "bulletin" feature so I can message everyone to when my stories go online.

Have any of you had Facebook problems. I'm just curious. This post will also be forwarded to the Today Show and several local and state TV stations. It does no good to begin a Facebook page critisizing them as no one is running the company anyway. I need everyone to help me by providing feedback and I plan to report them to the Better Business Bureau and Merchant Circle.

At this point I'm not worried about Facebook removing my page entirely. I feel sure that will happen regardless of my actions.

I'd hate to deal with advertising on Facebook. Since no one is running the show on the customer service end, I'd shudder to think how they treat their advertisers.

If anyone would like to be my friend on Facebook, please send me a friend request. I'm gathering animal lovers as I write about animal rights, animal abuse, and also great stories on rescue organizations. I'd send you a request myself-except Facebook doesn't believe in befriending strangers.

What comes after a 30 day friend request block? A friend of mine received that error a few days ago, she also said it would ban her requests permanently if it happened again.

This very same thing is happening to me, except I'm on a 30-day "final" probation.

Similar career to you - I am a journalist who deals with a very specific beat and had been vigorously adding connections.

Most were people I knew but some were friends/colleagues of friends at institutions that pertained to my beat. I am a journalist who can get these people exposure - no one woudn't want that. Again - 95% of these people, I know directly.

My profile is about stargazing in the wilderness. Who would even think that was spam even if they didn't stand up in my freaking wedding party?

I have since decided that I can never again add someone to my Facebook page, lest it be deleted forever.

I now have 1,100 Friends (I made the decision early on to not go with a Fan page but remain an individual)

I guess I will just ask people in article Comments and at talks to add me if they want and stick with that, but the fact that Facebook has no support staff to deal with users is absolutely despicable.

      Best of luck all,

I got a warning message from Facebook too. How annoying is it that they set those limits? After all, people can decline your friendship request!

It's October 30 and I'm on a 2 day Facebook probation again. Exact same problem. Oh well, guess I'll play on Catster for a few days. LOL.

Hi, Elisa, I think FB might have seen your clicking on friend requests as spamming.

I only enter my FB account twice a week, if that, and accept only the friend requests of people I know personally.

I plan to expand my use of FB when I've gotten my book published, but it's going to be only for publicity. My son manages my page for me, but not every day. He's a college student, a musician (mariachi) and want to find a job.

I hope things don't get locked up for you!

I've only had a few people send me back messages that their Facebook is friends only, which I respect. Most admit they don't know who their friends are before Facebook. I live in a town of 600 so I don't know many people in person. Now I let people friend me. That way its their choice. And the writing is really taking off. I'm afraid to do twitter. I've started work. I already have 400 emails a day to take care of. I just do what I can. LOL

I habitually reject "friend" requests from all sorts of independent "business" people, artisans, crafters and "writers". I'm a writer myself, but I recognize, as does Facebook, that allowing unfettered "friending" is simply poor man's spam. The whole point of Facebook is to build a network of people you know and share something with. I have several hundred "friends" that I have collected in the past year. About 3/4 of them requested a friendship because they like my writing and want to read my posts. If I decide to go into business with my services as I have with one website, I know I'm going to have to pay for advertising to draw customers. I will NOT use Facebook for that purpose, other than to possibly purchase advertising (which is what pays for Facebook to keep going). I wish I could work up some sympathy for you, but I can't. Facebook "warned" me when I started including my commercial weblink as part of my signature. That is their right. I started a "group" that included the same link and now refer folks who are interested to that site where they can go to my off-Facebook site for information if they wish.

Excessive "friending" is nothing less than Facebook spamming in my opinion. There is a way to get your message out, but it will likely involve paying for it.

Good luck with your writing. I'm struggling to reinvent myself as a writer, so I sympathize with your plight.

Facebook is invented to connect people who know each other at the first place. I do not like to see on FB friends requests from people who are not in any connection with me, because they usually want something from me - usually they request my free services in the name of fake "friendship", or try to sell me something. That has nothing to do with purpose of FB.

For business purposes and self-promotion, Twitter is much more appropriate place, because Twitter is much more created for business, less for friendships.

With Facebook and perhaps other social websites, there seems to be a very fine line between being friendly and promoting oneself and/or spamming - God forbid! If I were you, I'd dump Facebook down the toilet. They don't deserve you. Later!

It's actually worked out very well. I send very few requests now and let people find me. And word about how dangerous a world it is for our animals is spreading. I don't get hung up on when I call someone for an interview as much as I did in the beginning. I just started working so I'm having to cut back a little.

A good way of promoting your site :)

You are actually suppose to use Facebook to deepen and build friendships. You can't be friends with 1200 people. Seventy percent of those people you don't really know.

As a writer, to promote yourself, you should be using the pages. You create pages on Facebook that anyone can follow. This is how you promote yourself to large amounts of followers.

Technically you aren't suppose to be adding large amounts of people to your personal account that you don't know and have no plan to get to know to your Facebook. I work really hard to keep my friend list to my friends and writer associates. My Facebook is personal.

And their system is automated so there is no person blocking you, just a computer program. They can't turn it off or change the program for one person. That is why it auto expires. A pain yes but you are using the program in a way it is not designed for.

Yes many people use it this way but its not meant to be worked that way.

Is that frustrating to you? Probably.

But you want to use the program in a way it was not intended.

But give FB a week, they are always changing the rules. :)

Well, I think Facebook is a waste of time. Better to meet friends in the flesh.

But as it seems to be usual for people to waste their time gathering "friends" on this site I don't know what their problem is. Most of the friends on Facebook are an illusion anyway. I think it is not a loss.

I stopped using face books months ago but I desided to rejoin to help gain more people to my webpages. well I can tell you exactly what that is... Its their spam blocker. I too, go warned. Since its become so popular people are going on facebook to spam others with junk, much like myspace. To keep this from happining they will actually go as far as blocking people from being friends reguardless if you know them or not. sad right? i'm glad i got off that site months ago. not to mention the virus's it gives your computer. i'll stick with twitter and my cell phone! at least I wont have to worry about creepers. lol

      Hi Elisa,

I've gotten the same warning too. But really, how are you spamming for just sending a friend request? That just boggles my mind.

MySpace just updated their privacy features and is looking like a better option for a lot of ppl at this point.

Facebook will fall one day. Maybe, that time isn't too far off.

I had the same problem with and so I built a website that is both personal and business friendly. offers all of the features you find at facbook and you can have as many friends as you like.

I have a great idea for you. Check out

Please take a look and let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions on how to make it even better.

      Sincerely, Calvin

Hello Elisa, I also got this warning once. I don't know really their system as to how many friend requests we can make in a day; but when the words came that I can't make a friend request in the meantime I looked at all the requests I made using the suggestion tool. And I saw I had a lot of pending requests. So I deleted them and then the next time I logged in, the warning was pulled off. I think it's an automated system.

Anyhow, if facebook is a nightmare for you, Hubpages has some wonderful news for you esp. from the Hubnuggets Team. This hub is a Hubnuggets Wannabe! Check it out. Follow the link and you'll see your nomination.

That is a great idea. You might be suprised how much a letter or a few letters to you local congressional representative. They have interns who help to fight for the rights of their constiuency. I had a similiar issue with America Online and when I hear the name I make sure to let others know my problem. There's nothing as frustrating as a system that can't be modernized to meet the needs of all the people.

      Contact your congressperson.

There's nothing like a personal letter from someone

who may have the authority to "chill the airwaves," and or figure out how to tax a provider like FACEBOOK to make the CEO sit up and take notice...Perhaps a few well placed letters to movie reviewers just as the movie, "Social Network" is debuting this week

      New reply from Facebook

      Hi Elisa,

Facebook has limits in place to prevent behavior that others may find annoying or abusive. These limits restrict the rate at which you can use certain features on the site. You have received a warning because Facebook determined that you were going too fast when sending friend requests.

If you have also been blocked from sending friend requests, please note that these blocks can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Unfortunately, we cannot lift the block for you. When you are allowed to resume using this feature, please proceed with caution to avoid reaching the limit again. Please be aware that the threshold at which you are warned is not a specific number, but rather determined by different factors (such as speed, time, and quantity). For security reasons, we are unable to provide additional information about this system. We apologize for any inconvenience.

      Thanks for your understanding,

      User Operations

September 13, 2010 email to Facebook

I'm totally blocked from adding friends again. The last block lasted 10 days. How long will this one last? I got the first warning last night as I was accepting friend requests that said I was adding too fast. These people requested me. So let me get this straight. The #1 social site doesn't want me to request friends, click on suggestions sent me from friends I already do have or accept friend requests I receive from others. Are you guys for REAL? I haven't heard back from you in 2 weeks. Guess I'll add this to my hubpages article.Don't waste you breath getting back to me saying my account isn't blocked.
