India has again created history by initiating a project of supplying the cheapest tablet computers for school and college students for e learning. The tablet computer named as AKASH was launched on 5 October 2011. Akash is one of the best low cost tablet PC available in the world. It aims to improve the IT capabilities of the students and to bridge the digital divide in the country.

Akash Tablet To Enhance the ICT Capability of Students

Akash Tablet is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The main motive behind the programme is to enhance the ICT capability of students from primary classes to universities by utilising the specially prepared educational materials and the free e resources available in the internet for their studies and research. It aims to make available a low cost PC or Tablet PC for all students in the country. The price of Akash Tablet for students is between 20 to 23 dollars as per this programme.

Ubislate - Low Cost Tablet for the public

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jodhpur, one of the premier technical institution of India took up the project as per the suggestion of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. A prototype of the cheapest tablet was ready by 2009. Datawind, a British company based in Canada has agreed to manufacture the tablet as per the specifications of the government and the first batch of Akash tablet was delivered in October 2011. The commercial version of the Akash Tablet for the public, named Ubislate, is priced little higher than the subsidised student version.

THE DRAWBACKS OF AKASH TABLET – A REVIEW


The earlier versions of AKASH TABLET had been criticized by users and experts alike for its lack of integration of many basic applications usually seen every tablets. The absence of slot for mobile sim card was another weak spot of it. Many of the problems had been rectified in the later versions. The upgraded versions still have some drawbacks; the weak responsiveness of the touch screen, the 3 hours battery back up which is not satisfactory for any of the targeted sections of users and lack of internal cooling system.
