Using a Mac Computer

When you first purchase or use a Mac computer, the experience can be overwhelming. While the operating system is very streamlined, it can also be confusing and not too clearcut on what you can and can't do. The dock is no exception to this. It allows the user to keep icons in an easy to access area without cluttering the desktop, so it can be the most important part of the computer. But there is no explanation on how to add or remove icons from the dock.

The dock can hold some of your most frequently used applications so you can have easy access. Sure, the desktop can be used for that. But the dock helps with one click easy access and an easier to see display. Plus, depending on the applications you use, the dock will almost always be available to you just in case you need to open another application.

This article covers how to add and remove icons from the dock.

Adding Program Icons to the Dock of a Mac Computer

There are two easy ways you can keep an application in the dock of your Mac for easy access:

  • You can lock an application on the dock once it has been opened. Right-click over its icon in the dock, put your mouse cursor over options, then select "Keep in Dock" in the menu that appears. That will keep the application locked into the dock so it will always be available.
  • You can drag applications directly to the dock. It doesn't matter if the icon is on the desktop or in one of your folders. Left-click and hold on the application you want to place in the dock, drag it to the location you want it on the dock (the icons around it will spread apart), and then let go. The icon will automatically stay locked onto the dock.

Removing Program Icons from the Dock of a Mac Computer

Just as easy as it was to add icons to the dock of a Mac computer, it's just as easy to remove them from the dock of a Mac computer.

  • You can remove an application from the dock once it has been closed. Right-click over its icon on the dock, put your mouse cursor over options, then select "Remove from Dock" in the menu that appears. This will remove the icon from the dock.
  • Drag the application directly off the dock. This is easier than the first method, so this is the preferred way to do it. Left-click and hold the icon you wish to remove, drag it up to your desktop, then let go of the mouse button. The icon will automatically disappear.
