How Happy are you with your New Nexus 7?

See results

The new Nexus 7 has a great display, a faster processor than its rivals and chromecast makes it a perfect TV companion.

But it does not matter how good your display is, if you have a cracked or badly scratched screen.

It does not matter how good the processor is if your motherboard cracks when you drop it on a tiled floor!

So, here is a run through of the early options for protecting your new best friend from mega-grief.

On this page:

  • Shock resistant cases
  • Folio cases
  • Hard Cases
  • Silicone Skins
  • Wireless keyboard cases

Best Protective Case?

Tough is good...

Poetic Revolution

Powerful protection but be careful to select 2nd Gen case!

Poetic REVOLUTION Hybrid Case

Hybrid cases offer the best overall protection for a new Nexus 7. An outer layer of hard plastic and inner layer of shock-absorbing foam combine to shield the screen and sensitive electronics from drops and knocks.

The drawback is that hybrid cases add a lot of extra thickness. If you routinely carry your tablet in a backpack or big bag, the extra bulk will hardly be noticeable and the extra protection is invaluable.

For use around your home, a big thick hybrid can be overkill, unless maybe this is a case for a kid. Kids always benefit from high protection cases!

Otterbox is the first name to come to mind in connection with hybrid cases. The level of protection of an otterbox is outstanding but the company is agonizingly slow to get new cases onto the shelves.

The Poetic Revolution, pictured above, is available right now and is a high quality product at a reasonable price.

Graph Grip from Poetic

You cannot question the practical value of top quality silicone. Cheap silicone soaks up water, splits, tears and creeps over ports and openings like mold.

This case will certainly not let you down in those respects.

The neat, grid-like, design is appealing. Those squares also make the case easy to hold without slipping and they increase the all round shock-absorbing capabilities.

Best Androidified Case?

The little guy is just as appealing, especially in the black and smoke versions.

Cruzerlite Androidified

Cruzerlite have made only minimal changes to their very popular TPU case for the original Nexus 7.

The design is just as appealing now as it was twelve months ago and the makers are probably onto another winner.

Precise cutouts, genuine good quality TPU, scratch resistance, some shock absorbing ability (for minor bumps only) and the cute guy on the back should make this case a big favorite.

Folio Cases

The most popular tablet PC cases are folio style cases, These are usually inexpensive and highly practical.

The Moko offers:

  • Waterproof PU leather

  • No-scratch interior

  • Automatic wake/sleep

  • Can be charged when closed.

  • Cover folds into a stand

  • Hand strap for secure use

MoKo Slim-Fit, Practical and Inexpensive

The main advantage of choosing a Moko case is that the maker got all the mistakes out of the way with cases for the original Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

After a deluge of complaints concerning speaker openings and magnetic sleep/wake function they hurriedly changed their styles and came up with cases that have outsold all rivals.

The new case for the 2nd Gen Nexus 7 is known entity, well priced and likely to last.

The color choice can hardly be improved on.

Fintie Slim Fit Folio

Wild and extravagant cases are hard to find for the new Nexus 7. This line of cases from Fintie just about qualifies.

The style is the familiar folio, this one with little padding. But there is the kind of color styling you usually only see in a paintball park.

Leopard skin is one of the more restrained choices!

Recommended for kids. Ideal if all your friends have a Nexus 7 and you want to stand out.

DODOcase HARDcover

DODO have won a lot of praise for their smartphone and iPad covers and now make a case for the Nexus 7.

Each case is handmade using traditional bookbinding techniques in San Francisco.

You can have the case personalized with up to 3 letters (initials of your name, perhaps).

This is certainly a beautiful cover and can also fool a tablet thief who mistakes your Nexus 7 for a book.

Amzer Silicone Skin

A lightweight silicon skin is one of the most practical protective layers for any electronic device.

Genuinely good quality silicone products like the Amzer line are waterproof, non-slip, hard to rip, and, for the thickness, very good at absorbing shocks.

There are many fine color choices for a skin that will last and last.

Best Neoprene Sleeves

Great designs from BUILT

Mivizu sleeves

Neoprene is a good choice for people who are pretty careful. There is all the scratch protection that you will even need plus some water-resistance and limited drop protection.

The best neoprene cases can also be very attractive.

BUILT have fantastic floral designs. Mivizu have bold colors and an extra pocket that is very useful for accessories, phone, or even a wallet...

Keyboard Cases

A Nexus 7 can be amazingly productive with the simple addition of a Bluetooth keyboard.

MoKo Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard Case

A virtual keyboard is not the quickest way to type a college essay or write a dozen emails on the fly.

A real-world, hands on keyboard wins every time for speed and accuracy.

This keyboard case from Moko, is a long way from full size but it is functional and will boost your productivity enormously.

Keyboard Stand/Case

This is a tough hard-shell case with a non-slip, rubberized finish. Your N7 docks neatly in the groove of the case and you have a small but usable wireless keyboard ready for use.

The case has its own batteries so it will not be a drain on your tablet.

Charging time is around four hours and it will then give you around fifty hours of working time.

Best Real Leather Case for the new Nexus 7? Best Plaid?

Portenzo are a US-based, craft-centered supplier of wonderful cases for tablets of all kinds.

You can find vivid plaid, real maple wood and, best of all for me, at least, top quality imported leather, hand-worked and hand-aged.

The video below shows cases for an iPad but the makers promise they will make you a Nexus 7 case to the same exacting standards.

The only drawback? A hundred dollar price tag...

Worth Noting...

The products on this page are the latest, 2013 release, second generation, Asus Google Nexus 7 cases and covers.

They are not compatible with any other tablet.

I have a poetic revolution on my 2013 and its great. The built in screen protector always wins me over. Not as much drop protection as my 2012 with an otterbox but its pretty good.

I personally like that Graph Grip from Poetic case. I feel like if I'm going to get a case it needs to be thin but protect my tablet. I think that the rubber cases are great for tablets.
