Home Theater Projector Reviews 2014

Updated on December 8, 2013

Many home theater projectors owners prefer the projectors to traditional TVs because the projectors can deliver higher quality pictures and you get a more authentic movie viewing experience.

The brands of the products I look at in home theater projector reviews 2014: Epson, ViewSonic and Optoma are the big brands in the home theater projector market.

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 (V11H373120)

The PowerLite is my pick as best premium home theater projector of 2014.

Its 1080p projector enhances your experience by displaying movies, sport and video games with a crystal clear image. Featuring a D7 chip and contrast ratio of up to 50,000:1 it provides distinctive details whether used in a dimly lit area or not. It's all thanks to 2000 Lumens of color and white light output. Generating a full spectrum of true-to-life colors is the CFine 12-bit technology, 3LCD, 3-chip technology and the Epson exclusive cinema filter and state-of-the-art Fujinin lens.

Experience every nuance of your favorite shows, sports and games. Offering two HDMI 1.3 ports it has cutting-edge connectivity. Efficient filtration and airflow management systems allow for easy maintenance. The Epson 8350 has a long 2.1 power zoom lens and vertical and horizontal lens shift allowing placement on a bookcase so no professional installation needed.

The 8350 is the replacement for the 8100 from 2009. The 8100 had issues with parts burning out to quickly. This has been resolved in the 8350.

Optoma HD20 High Definition 1080p DLP Home Theater Projector

Brining a new flexibility to your HD home theatre/multimedia experience the Optoma HD20 has true 1080p resolution, delivering first-rate color saturation and subtle details for high image quality. It has a sleek design and weighs only 6.4 lbs making it perfect for sharing big-screen movies, sporting events, concerts, or even taking video gaming to a new level.

This unit is the upgraded version of the 720p DLP projector. The 1920 X 1080 resolutions brings viewing similar to a typical 2k digital cinema, making a 145" diagonal screen viewed from about 15 ft away give a pleasing movie experience. The source material you watch is what brings out the quality, like for instance Blu-Ray disks which offers it the highest resolution detail.

User feedback indicates that the Optoma HD20 closely matches real cinema experience. Some have watched Kung-Fu Panda and were amazed at what is revealed on a larger screen. Others mention seeing details on movies like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen that weren't even noticeable on an iMax. Video games are fantastic of course, working well with PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The bright setting should only be used when there's a lot of ambient light to fight with, otherwise the Cinema, Reference, or any custom settings is sufficient with the help of a calibration disk. Its only limitation would probably be the absence of an audio output, in which case you may need to run your HDMI through an A/V receiver first.

The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 705HD is a draw card to impress neighbors with or you may want to share photos from your PC via a USB connection. It has seven customizable color modes with simple setup and 1.2x optical zoom. The long-life E-TORL lamp lasts for up to 5000 hours.
