Best Messenger Bags To Protect Your MacBook Pro - Keeping Your Apple Laptop Safe

Updated on May 31, 2010

Do I Really Need A Laptop Messenger Bag?

Now that you've purchased a sleek new Apple notebook, whether it's a MacBook or MacBook Pro, you'll want to consider an investment in a laptop messenger bag. These bags, such as those made by timbuk2, typically feature a built-in padded compartment to protect your notebook computer.

You may think you can get by with just a simple notebook sleeve, and indeed you might be able to, but if you want serious protection of your Apple MacBook you should spring for a bag that's designed for them.  For this I recommend timbuk2 messenger bags.  I've personally used mine for several years, and it is still working good as new.  The bag is water resistant, good to cycle with, and the reflective fabric is a nice safety feature.  And like I said, my 15 inch MacBook Pro messenger bag is several years old.  The timbuk2 company has grown by leaps and bounds since then, and there are tons of options now available!

Will These Bags Protect My MacBook Pro?

Indeed they will protect your Apple laptop!  Timbuk2 laptop messenger bags protect your MacBook inside and out.  The bag's surface can either be woven out of waterproof fabric or ballistic nylon fiber, and they are lined with rubberized material on the inside.  While not making the bag completely waterproof (it won't withstand a dunking in the lake), this will protect your laptop from rain and snow.

The bags used to have the laptop compartment inside, but now they've moved it to the rear of the bag, which unfolds to make the messenger bag TSA compliant, a handy new feature!  The laptop compartment is generously padded and lined with cordurouy to prevent your MacBook Pro from getting jossled and scratched in your travels.  And the padding really works!  I once had someone drop a pile of heavy books on top of mine, and my MacBook Pro came out unscathed!

Where Can I Buy A Messenger Bag For My MacBook Pro?

The timbuk2 website allows you to customize the bag to fit your needs, but if you're just looking for a good bag for your Mac, and don't need anything too fancy you can find discounted timbuk2 messenger bags elsewhere online.  Below are some offerings from

I feel your pain, Steve. My white Macbook is held together with tape. And now, since the new modles, it's decided to become an order of magnitude slower. And here I thought this would be the machine that would last me until Apple makes a tablet! Instead, it looks like I'm going to pull the trigger as soon as new macs will ship with Snow Leopard. I'm guessing (hoping?) Macworld 2009 I'm still on Tiger, so I figure it just makes sense to bypass Leopard.

Have you ever thought about cretnaig an e-book or guest authoring on other sites? I have a blog centered on the same topics you discuss and would really like to have you share some stories/information. I know my viewers would value your work. If you are even remotely interested, feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

Did this writer ever go to high school? Or read a book? Too many misspellings to count in this article...not to mention punctuation errors.

This hub is similar to mine, but mine focuses on form-fitting cases for MacBook Pros. I'm voting this up because it's a great complement to my guide. Thanks for posting!

A useful hub, I personally have had a better experience using Samsonite, but I have heard good things about timbuk2 too
