Are you a Brony? The explosive response to My Little Pony...
Pony + Bro = Brony
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a cartoon that took the internet and industry by storm by doing something that never has happened before. MLP:FIM we all know is a show that follows the adventures of six girl ponies as they discover the inner meanings of friendship. If you don't fully understand the core meaning about the show or know the characters check out the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Guide and Review. Once you understand the gist of the show and maybe have seen at least one episode you will fully understand this article. So simply put, what is a Brony? A Brony is a male OR female (females are also referred to as Pegasisters) who loves MLP and considers themselves part of the fandom. Its coined by the overall large and vast amount of male viewers of the show. MLP:FIM is the first cartoon aimed at a young girl demographic that has a larger viewership of males and young adults then any other cartoon. It becomes a great gap closer in families with multiple kin of varying ages.
There are enough males up to age 35 that make a notable sum of the percentage of overall viewers. Many elements of MLP:FIM make this odd culture out of targeted demographics for multiple reasons. Some of the reasons why this happened are mainly caused by the internet but there are actually real backings to why more people like the show then is expected. These reasons include:
Lauren Faust's Writing and Characterization
Lauren Faust has written this remake of My Little Pony in a way that it is watchable by all audiences, male and female alike. Though the cleaver comedy and sense of adventure she expertly winded the episodes together in a way that it is simply entertaining. Each and every pony stays true to their "traits" for example Rainbow Dash the tomboy of the group is up in your face and often times acts like a "bro". Faust also worked on other shows many males watched like Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends.
Themes Older Audences can Appreciate
Following through all the trials of having a friend is clearly something every single one of us has to take into account in our own lives. It teaches many of life's lessons of kindness and friendship for a better world. To put it simply, the themes presented in MLP are well planned and executed in a way that is entertaining and easy to retain. Unlike some shows which have little to no plot with no goals or lessons at all.
Excellent Flash Based Design
MLP is completely made in a flash based design that allows emotions to happen easily and unusual movements happen smoothly. The animation itself is simply perfect and easy to note about. This links highly to the internet based culture who are used to flash animations and .swf files. Together with the clear colors and overall simplicity of the design it leaves the viewer wanting to see more.
Listens to the Fanbase
MLP was shocked at this whole "Brony" fan base but adopted them instead of ignoring them. A good example of this is the name for the gray pony - Derpy Hooves. The pony used to be unnamed and someone submitted the idea to Faust and now we have Derpy.

The Growth of the Fandom
Due greatly by the internet more and more MEME's and spoofs of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are popping up daily. A lot of the meme's go along with the Bro and Gamer culture. While many of them are in simple fun and are safe for most audiences there is a darker "adult" side to the fandom. The good side of the fandom focus on making people laugh from the way the ponies look or actions the ponies could partake in real life. Also many art projects arisen from the Fandom. These things include:
Personification of the Ponies
Pony Flash Games
Make your own Pony
and many others.
While the darkside of the fandom often times includes sexual acts, outright porn, gore, and overall violent messages. These I will not go into and you will have to find for yourself.

Two Male Voice Actors in My Little Pony
There are male ponys and creatures inside of My Little Pony FIM such as Star Treks John de Lancie and the famous parody songwriter Weird Al Yankovic! John de Lancie voices the evil turned good character know as Discord who loves chaos and disorder. Weird Al Yankovic plays as the male counterpart of Pinkie Pie - Cheese Sandwich. These two are openly admitted as Brony's and haven't got any negative fan mail for being so! John de Lancie also co-directed and was in a documentary about bronies: Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony
