How to Build Your Pro Karaoke DJ System | Boss VE-20 Voice Performer Pedal Review

Updated on September 28, 2011

It may just be me, (and I welcome comments on this from other KJ’s) but I think most KJ’s (Karoke DJ’s for the uninformed) do only minimal service for their customers by providing just the basics of the music and video on stage. Some that are very well paid do not even provide key control for the singers, and only marginally EQ the voice channels on the mixer. It’s a shame but the facts are the facts, I have done karaoke in seven different countries (not including Iraq) and very rarely did I see even the basic things to help enhance the singers performance by either props, equipment; or even good fundamental sound engineering (mixing).

Now that being said I have seen some real winning ways overseas as well. If you ever visit Cyprus (Greek side) I highly recommend you have a karaoke night at “The Oasis”. The Karaoke nights are absolutely a great time whether you sing, dance, or just observe. It is a blast. The fixed system the owner has put together (and operates personally) provides for either standing or roaming performances, and the customer participation is huge, and a great deal of fun. There is just nothing like being able to perform from the middle of a crowded dance floor with ‘em all dancing to you and your music!

So what does that mean to me your bare bones mobile DJ? Well here is a tool that can help you enhance your singers and make your shows standout from the common mediocrity of the rest. The Boss VE 20 Vocalist Processor is a great addition to your system at a relatively low cost.

The key for a KJ in its use is not top place it on stage but to keep it close at hand at the mixing table ( most of your performers are not going to know how to use it anyway). If you have a good karaoke mixer than you have key control for the music at hand. That’s well enough, but I would suggest you can do better by the singer by key-pitch controlling their voice as opposed to changing the familiar sound of the music; especially if the range is way off of the song chosen. You can mix and change it on the fly and get the tome right in the first couple bars once you get good with it.

Another fun feature is the chorus effect. Once again, the potential to increase the fun is unlimited just from this effect not to mention the robo voice or tube effect. Further, and if for no other reason, you can use the compression settings to brighten and enhance the singer. The possibilities are endless and can really set you apart from the crowd of ho hum KJ’s that just show up and spin the requests and maybe even announce the singers instead of saying “next up is so and so” all night.

If you’re not a KJ but a home studio player or performer you may want to look into this as well. While most good home studio software has these special effect built in, the fact that you can play around and find some good effects so easily and switch them on the fly gives you some great opportunities. For the performer that has trouble finding a good sound engineer (there are probably less than 100 of these world wide anyway) you can put a lot of control of your sound right at your feet; it even has phantom power for those of you who need it. No more worries if the house board has that feature on your channel or not.

All in all a very useful tool/gadget to enhance your show/recordings/performance no matter which you need. Below are the listed features and a link below that; have some fun and Keep on Jammin’!!

BOSS VE-20 takes your voice to a whole new level! VE-20 is packed with essential, high quality effects for vocalists such as Reverb, Delay, Dynamics, Chorus, and more. These effects has been difficult for vocalists to have control of, but now the VE-20 offers incredible easy user interface to totally control your vocal sound. Simply dial up your favorite setting and sing -- no programming required. VE-20 is a practical vocal effects processor even for first timers. Of course, if you want to roll your sleeves up and create, the VE-20 has a variety of editing tools onboard.

Harmony Factory

Add lush harmonies to your lead vocals instantly as you sing. Select the harmony interval of your choice, or create multi-part stacks, such as upper third and lower fifth, and save them for instant recall. You can also thicken your vocals with Double Track. Best of all, the VE-20 is incredibly easy to use. There's no need for programming, and you don't need to input notes from a keyboard as you do with a Vocoder -- simply sing and let the VE-20 do the rest!

Phrase Loop

Sing, record, loop, and overdub with the onboard Phrase Looper, inherited from BOSS's popular RE-20XL Loop Station. You get 38 seconds of mono record time to loop and layer phrases, and you can do it all in real time onstage. From doo-wop to human-beatbox, this tool will wow audiences!

Special FX

In addition to its harmony and pitch-correction tools, the VE-20 offers a colorful and expressive collection of special effects, including Electric (made famous by artists such as Cher and Black-Eyed Peas), Robot, Strobe (rotary), Distortion, Chorus, and Reverb.

Road-Tough Design

With the same solid-metal construction as other BOSS stompboxes, the VE-20 is built to last. Its footprint is identical to BOSS Twin-Series pedals, ensuring that it will fit perfectly into existing multi-pedal BOSS pedalboards and travel cases.

- Specialized effects for vocalists, including Harmony, Double-Track, Dynamics, Reverb, Delay, and more

- Create the total of 3-part harmonies and layers

- Realtime pitch-correction tools

- Special FX, including Distortion, Radio and Strobe

- Phrase Looper with 38 seconds (mono) of recording time

- Phantom power for condenser microphones

- Runs on six AA-batteries or AC adaptor (PSA)

I might have a bit of trouble using my trusty butter knife screwdriver with this one, but will pass it on to some karaoke friends. Thanks for a great hub!

RTE - Its top notch for a pedal, the only way you beat it is to buy a rack mount system but then you need that sound engineer to make it go. Digitech makes one similar but no phantom power and I don't think they hold up as well as the Boss pedals do. Thanks for stopping by!

Interesting stuff, I have been looking into getting an electronic harmonizer for performances but this looks like it might be just a cut above the those I was considering. Thanks for the info.
