Updated on December 8, 2013

As our society becomes more dependent on technology, we want to be able to take our work with us. As a result, many people are switching to netbooks and laptops. People are also buying these for personal use, and when they want to get one of these machines, they look to at cheap online options.

In 'Budget laptop reviews 2014' we will begin by reviewing our recommended low cost Acer Laptop, then we will review a super cheap Samsung laptop, after which we will take a look at what you can get if you spend a little more.

There are many options and price points out there, and it can be a difficult task to pick something out, but with reviews a person can work on making a more informed decision.

Acer Aspire 11.6-Inch Sapphire Blue Laptop

This model comes with a 1.4 GHz Intel processor, 2 GB of RAM and a 250GB SATA hard drive. There is a built in webcam, Wi-Fi and a 6-cell Li-ion battery. It is pre-loaded with Window’s Vista Home premium edition. The monitor is an 11.6” wide screen with a battery life of up to 6 hours depending on usage. This computer only weighs 3.1 pounds and is 1.2” thick.
The touchpad is a multi-gesture touchpad, which means that you can pinch, flick or swirl your fingers to allow for a more natural and intuitive navigation system.  Of course, it still works like a traditional touchpad as well.

For someone who wants a netbook, but still wants the functionality of a laptop, this is a great machine to get. It is very portable and light so you can still move around with it, but it has a larger processor to handle all your desires. If you do need access to a CD, you can pick up an external drive for fairly cheap at any store.

A great thing about this machine is that it doesn’t tend to run hot, and it runs quietly, so you don’t have the loud humming of a machine or have to worry about it overheating and shutting down or frying itself.

Samsung NC10-13GB 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life

For another perspective, there is this Samsung netbook. It comes with a 1.6GHz processor and 1GB of ram, which can be expanded up to 2GB.  The hard drive is 160GB, the monitor 10.1” and the computer comes fully equipped with Wi-Fi. This machine is running Windows XP, which is less resource heavy than Vista, which is helpful with only the 1GB of ram. This machine only weights 2.8 pounds, so it is easily portable to work on.

As a netbook is designed mostly for you to travel and remain in touch, but not necessarily to be a workhorse, you may want to watch what you are doing on here. If you are a big gamer, this is not going to be a machine for you, as it will not have the resources.
The lighting of this monitor is good, as you can read a lengthy file, such as a book or other large documents, without your eyes tiring out too easily.

HP Pavilion DV4-1541US 14.1-Inch Espresso Laptop - Up to 4.25 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

For someone who is looking for a laptop, but doesn’t like the ones with the larger screens, this may be a good option for you. It comes with a 2.2GHz processor, 4GB Ram, and a 320GB hard drive which will allow you to store a tone of files. There is already a DVD burner/re-writer installed, in case you find yourself running out of room or to back up all your data. The screen is a 14.1” widescreen which is great if you want to run widescreen movies but don’t have a widescreen TV. Your computer will arrive preloaded with Windows 7, so you can just turn it on and go. This computer is 5 pounds, and only 1.3” thick, so it is still very portable.

Some of the features of this unit are that it is quick to boot up and runs quickly no matter what you are doing. If you need to turn the wireless off, there is a single click to accomplish this.

The touchpad on this unit has been improved and is more sensitive, but if you cannot handle it, there is a button right beside it that you can use to turn it off. There is also a touch control for the volume, so that when you are listening to music or watching a movie it is easy to control the sound.

I picked up Acer AO521 (10'') last year and coudn't be happier. For the size and price, it is a very good purchase. With 1.3 MP built-in webcam, bluetooth 3.0, 250 GB hard drive and HDMI it is perfect for my tasks. I'm not into gaming, but as to videos it handles 1080p. In fact I think a newer model (AO522) is a step back.

One of these days I may buy a lap top. In our home we spend a lot of time in the kitchen. God Bless
