Functions to know in Modern Camera Phones

Updated on September 1, 2012

The following list shows the main parameters you need to know to buy a perfect camera phone:

  • Mega Pixels Value
  • Whether it has auto-focus or not.
  • Image stabilization function.
  • Face detection function.
  • Smile-Shot function.
  • A wide range of preset scene modes.
  • Quality Optics.

Mega Pixel Value

The main thing you need to know is the phone model which suits most to fix your budget. Therefore you need to know the cheapest model which satisfies most of the above mentioned parameters before you buy a mobile phone .

The number of pixels increases the picture quality in good light conditions. That means in good light conditions, 5 or 8 megapixel cameras can gives clear pictures. But most importantly,  if you choose a high end megapixel camera, you can get large size (high resolution) photos.

  • 12MP Camera's maximum resolution gives 4032 × 3024 size.
  • 8MP Camera's maximum resolution gives 3264x2448 size.
  • 5MP Camera's maximum resolution gives 2560x1920 size.
  • 3MP Camera's maximum resolution gives 2048x1536 size.
  • 2MP Camera's maximum resolution gives 1600x1200 size.

Recently, the companies, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson introduced 12MP cameras for mobile phones. But theses high end phones are very valuable. They can be used for professional photography.

Auto-focus function

Auto focus function makes the camera focus on your object correctly and it reduces blinked and blurred shots you take. It doesn’t matter how many megapixels a phone has, autofoucus lence automatically changes the focus length and gives you a better picture and reduces the ghastly look.

Image stabilization

Image stabilization function is used to capture the moment on time. Some digital cameras save their captured images after few seconds of pressing the shutter button. So in those cameras you can't capture any moving object as a still because your image saves after few seconds.

Face Detection function

Face detection function is another useful option that helps to take quality portrait and group photos. With this function virtually clears the human faces by its own software. There is no hardware mechanism in it.

Smile-Shot function

When you take group or portrait photos, the person who faces the photo has to smile and wait till the photographer takes the photo. Sometimes this doesn't capture his/her natural smile. But with this modern function it automatically waits and detects his/her smile and gets the photo once he/she smiles. These functions are mainly run by mobile software applications. There is no hardware effect in it.

Wide Range of Preset scene modes

This is useful to get the photographs. If you prefer taking pics outside in the sunshine, you’ll need a camera phone that lets you tune white balance or exposure settings.

  • Cloudy
  • Sunny
  • Tungsten
  • Fluorescent

High-end camera phones, like Samsung Pixon and Sony Ericsson Satio, also include modes such as portrait, landscape, sport, , party, candle light and even beach and sunset. And also they have special mode called micro mode to get the closer photos of flowers and insects.

Quality Optics

Most quality camera phones's comes with quality optics and its mainly causes to increase the picture quality. Most LG phone comes with Schneider-Kreuznach optics and Nokia phones with Carl-Zeiss optics. Sony Ericsson,Samsung and most other producers don't releases these optic names because they have already released their digital camera models with their own trademarks like Sony Cybershot.
