Make free calls to USA and Canada using Gmail

Updated on May 17, 2015

If you have friends or relatives in the USA and Canada you would like to stay in touch with or own a small business and have to call clients in this region and want to save on calling costs, this is for you.

I normally use it to call Canada. I have unlimited minutes nationwide in USA but cannot call Canada directly, so whenever i need to call canada, this is what i use. I login to Google voice then call my mobile, as soon as i pick up my phone the bell starts ringing in Canada. I can talk to people in canada or america for no additional cost.

You will need.

  1. Gmail account
  2. Google Voice account

Gmail Account

If you already have a Gmail account skip to the next section. If not, lets create one.

You will need a Gmail account to access Google Voice.

Click here to open up the Gmail registration page and fill in your details.

Its quite straight forward but if you need help then check out the video on the right hand side or Click here for Google's help on creating an account.

Google Voice

Now that you have a Gmail account you can use the same username and password for google voice.

Play the video on the right hand side for a description of Google voice.

Click Here to login and get started.

If you don't want to link it to your existing phone then get a different number provided by google while registering.

Below is a quick guide to setup a Google voice account if you have a USA phone number. If you do not have a USA number then follow the instructions on the video below this one.

If you are outside USA and need a USA number to use with Google voice then follow the instructions in the video below.

If you don't want to use a phone but want to connect through the computer then you can download the Google Talk application and use that or just use Gmail. For Gmail you may need a plug-in.

Click here to download and install the plug-in.

And that's basically it.

Sometimes Gmail might not allow calls because your existing gmail account region is set to something other than USA. make sure in the email regional settings you select USA.

Calling USA and Canada is free with google talk and you can patch the call to your cell phone (will use up minutes) or with google talk or even Gmail on your computer.

If you have any troubles in getting it to work, visit the google support for google voice here.

Irfan......You're not serious. 9 hours on the phone? Do you realize how difficult it is to have a 9-hr conversation? I'm stunned. This is a full work day, Irfan.....too bad you couldn't earn an hourly wage!

And they say "women gab on the phone!!".......Wow. I'm tired and my jaws hurt just thinking about being on the phone for 9 hrs.

Oh by the way....interesting hub. Up+++

Google voice is very stable ... I thought of spending a day on the phone with family (pakistan to usa mobile)... my nephew called me from pakistan and we managed to spend just under 9 hours on the phone without a break or any kind of disturbance/Interference.

Very cool. How is the call quality on Google? I am thinking of opening a Skype account for all my primary calls but if Google is stable and trustworthy, I may consider them instead.

I have Google voice and have never used it, really didn't know what the capabilities were until now. Will have to experiment a bit with it. Have been using Skype to call from my phone and works really well. Thanks
