Celkon A118 HD Signature Review

Updated on August 8, 2013

Today morning, I saw a newspaper snippet. It said that regional brands like Micromax, Karbonn, Celkon, Lava and Intex are giving a tough time for the major brands like Samsung, Sony and Nokia. In a way, I was happy because I was predicting of this growth a long time back and now it is finally happening. Celkon started with cheap phones and now they are coming to the forefront with power packed smartphones. They announced the release of Celkon A118 HD Signature in May and it was released in May itself. I know, the name of the phone is really long, so I will be referring to it has Celkon A118 HD. Did you notice the similarity of the name of Micromax’s A116 HD and Celkon’s A118 HD.?

Looks:

The phone looks sleek and amazing. The screen is large and we have the earpiece and the secondary camera at the top. Down, we have the two touch capacitative buttons for navigation and solid button at the center. It looks a lot like the iPhone 5 from an angle. Moving on to the left hand side, we can see the volume rocker and to the right, we have the power button. On the top we have the 3.5 mm headphone jack as well as the micro-USB port for computer connectivity as well as charging. At the back we have the primary camera with the flash, the Celkon logo and the loudspeaker. The edges are smooth and curvy and there is a bezel coating which is thin. The back panel is plastic, but doesn’t attract fingerprints because of its finish.

My Rating:

4 stars for Celkon A118 HD Signature

Hardware:

A lot of promising hardware has been packed into the Celkon A118 HD. Under the panel of the A118 HD we have the 1.2 GHz quad-core processor of the MTK6589 chipset. This is the very same chipset used in the Micromax A116 HD. I think it comes with same GPU that is the PowerVR SGX544. This will be good enough for gaming at an entry level. The phone also has 1 GB of RAM which helps the cause of gaming, browsing and watching videos by a great deal. The internal memory is a disappointment yet again, in this phone too, as it has only 4 GB of internal storage. This will be good enough for a couple of HD movies and a few dozen of songs and apps. There is an option to increase it to 32 GB via microSD card.

Display:

I think this is the highlight of the Celkon A118 HD Signature. I didn’t want to type in the whole name, but I thought it would be good to do it as I am going to look into the most enticing part of this phone. The large 5 inch screen is just so bright and vivid. The screen boasts of an HD resolution that is 1280x720 pixels. It has an IPS panel which makes sure that viewing angles are great. The pixel density is almost equal to 294 pixels per inch. At the same price range we have the Karbonn Titanium S5 with a 5 inch qHD screen. In the Titanium S5 the ppi is only 221 pixels per inch.

Camera:

The rear side of the phone has the next highlight of the Celkon A118 HD and that is the 8 megapixel rear camera with flash. The rear camera captures great pictures and there is the geo tagging feature along with auto focus. The 3 megapixel front camera also takes great pictures and it can be used for video calling as well. The rear camera is capable of recording full HD videos at 1920x1080 pixels and it stores them in the 3gp format.

Battery and other Features:

The battery is good enough for a day’s usage with average gaming, browsing and watching videos. It comes with a 2000mAh battery. The phone heats up to a good extent while charging, browsing the net as well as when gaming. This is one of the down sides of this phone. The phone supports Bluetooth v4.0. It has a lot of sensors like the proximity sensor, light sensor and an accelerometer. The phone comes with the latest version of Jellybean and that is, Jellybean v4.2.1.

Verdict:

I think this phone is a steal for the price that it is asking. The Celkon A118 HD Signature is up for grabs at just Rs.11,000 in many of the online stores. Some places it is listed at Rs.12,999. The downside of this phone is the fact that it heats up a lot and the internal memory is low. Looking in to the positives, the screen is just really good. The colors produced by it are vivid and crisp. The rear camera is awesome too as it can record full HD videos which many of the phones in this price range cannot do. So I am giving this phone a rating of 4 stars out of 5. So until next time this Rajee.B, signing off.
