Free Cell Phone GPS Tracking

Updated on September 20, 2014

A few years ago the Federal government mandated that all cell phone manufacturers start including GPS receivers in cell phones that they manufacture and sale.  The reason for this was that 911 emergency operators were receiving numerous calls from people on their cell phones and the callers were not able to tell the operator their exact location.  Government officials mandated that cell phone manufacturers install GPS receivers in their cell phones so that when people called 911 from their cell phone, their exact location would instantly pop up on the computer screen of the 911 operator.

It didn't take long for people to realize that since cell phones already have GPS receivers in them, with a little tweaking they can be used for cell phone gps tracking.  Being able to track someone with their cell phone use to be something that was only seen in movies.  Today we live in a world where it is a reality and quite simple to do.

There are numerous cell phone gps tracking services available for people to choose from.  Some of them are free and some of them charge a fee.

Cell Phone GPS Tracking from Sprint

Sprint Mobile is one company that has jumped on the cellp hone GPS tracking bandwagon. Sprint realized that many of their customers would find value in a service like this and that it is a potential huge moneymaker for them. Cell phone service providers make significant amount of their profits from what are called off add on sales.

An add on sale is a feature or service that can be offered by the cellphone service provider in addition to the regular ability to make phone calls with the cell phone. Some examples would be text messaging, data plans, free long distance, adding a line, and many more.

Sprint introduced a service that they call the Sprint family locator service a couple of years ago. With this service, users can use any Sprint or Nextel cell phone for cell phone GPS tracking. Some cellphone tracker services require that you install special software onto your phone but with the Sprint family locator service this isn't necessary. This is a big bonus if you don't have one of the new fancy programmable smart phones.

Unlike some free cell phone tracking services, Sprint charges a modest fee to be able to use their service. You can try the Sprint family locator service for free for 15 days to decide if you like it. If after the 15 day trial us up, you decide that you want to stay with the service, you will be charged a modest $5.00 a month.

Your $5.00 a month will buy you the ability to track up to four cell phones. If you have the need to track more than for cell phones you can pay more to have more phones in your cell phone GPS tracking network.

One advantage of the sprint family locator service is that you don't have to subscribe to a data plan in order to be able to use the cell phone tracker service. This is different than most cell phone locator services.

One nice feature about Sprints cell phone tracking is that you can log onto any computer with an Internet connection to track the cell phones that are in your cell phone tracking network.

Sprint Cell Phone GPS Tracking Features

here are some other nice features that Sprint has built into their cell phone tracking service. When you use the cell phone locator service, whether you are doing it from smart phone or a computer you will see real time locations of your friends and family on interactive maps on your screen. You will receive their location in great detail on the map. Instead of just seen their location on a map you will be given their exact street address of where they are.

One really cool feature is that you can make settings that will cause this service to send you automatic text messages at specific times on specific days with the location of the people you are tracking in your network. This is a great feature that many cellphone GPS tracking services haven't thought of yet. A great use for this is that if you want to make sure that your children get home from school every day and they arrive home at 4:00 PM, you can set the service to send you a text message of your children's location at 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Every day at 4:00 PM, you will then receive a text message telling you whether not your children made it home safely. For $5.00 a month this is peace of mind that is well worth paying for.

Another great feature that Sprint thought of is historical location logging. You can look at the location history of anyone in your cell phone tracking network for the last seven days. If you have a teenage daughter that is not supposed to be hanging out with a particular boy, it's quite easy to look at the location history of the past week to see if she went over to his house. This is just one use of this feature but I'm sure you can think of many more.

Another great feature that Sprint built into their cellphone tracking service is password protection. This prevents unauthorized tracking of your children, family, or friends. The person who is going to track them from either a cell phone or a computer must enter the authorization password in order to do so.

More Sprint Cell Phone GPS Tracking Info

A lot of people have purchased fancy programmable smart phones and someday all phones will be like this but there are still plenty of us that don't have these smart phones yet. Sprint has taken that into account and made it possible for you to use their service even if you don't have the latest technology. If you have an older Sprint or Nextel cell phone, you can still use the service but in order to do any tracking you will have to log onto a computer with an Internet connection.

There are no hidden fees or add ons necessary to use the Sprint family locator service. One thing that you may want to subscribe to is text messaging if you don't already. This way you can send text messages directly from the Sprint family locator service to anyone that you are tracking. It also enables you to be able to make use of the automatic text messaging function in their service.

Another handy use of this service is to find a lost or stolen cell phone. Everyday thousands upon thousands of cell phones are lost or stolen. If you subscribe to Sprints family locator service, you can log onto any computer with an Internet connection and locate your phone within seconds.

There are some basic limitations that come with cell phone GPS tracking. First the phone must be turned on in order for it to be located with the service. Second, the cell phone must be with in a Sprint cell phone coverage area.

It seems like Sprint has thought of everything when it comes to their cellphone GPS tracking service.
