UPDATE: SMART Launches Opera Unlisurf 15. The most affordable surfing service in the Philippines!

Wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. launched yet another affordable data plan with Opera Mini. The new Opera UnliSurf 15 data plan is now considered the most affordable mobile surfing service in the Philippines.

The daily unlimited package lets users surf the internet for 24 hours for 15 pesos. It also includes a free 15mb data for streaming videos and downloading of content. With this data plan, you can now access your favorite websites* anytime, anywhere

To enjoy this affordable rate, just text the keyword, OPERA 15 send to 211 (Smart Prepaid, Talk ‘N Text, regular Postpaid, Infinity).

*Streaming of videos and downloading of content in excess of 15mb will get standard data charges.

Below are the data plan options:

How can we maximize and enjoy mobile internet using SMART Always On?

If you’re like me who want to read emails and access, browse and update your social networks on the go then I recommend that you use Always ON 99. Simply type ON <space> 99 and send to 2200. This is a 50 MB consumable plan for 30 days.

How can a 50 MB last for 30 days?

Of course 50 MB will not last for 30 days if you are using your default mobile internet browser! Your next step is to download Opera Mini for mobile. Why Opera Mini? Simply because it has a compression technology that reduces data costs to up to 90%. Isn’t that amazing?

To download and install Opera Mini, just go to m.opera.com then choose the browser that is compatible for your phone and follow the instructions. The cost for downloading and installing opera mini is 10 pesos. You can use your computer if you want to download the installer for free but I suggest that you use your mobile phone because it will automatically detect which version of opera mini is compatible to your phone.

After installing opera mini and registering to Always On 99, you can now enjoy access to different websites. You can also chat with your friends using yahoo messenger and facebook.

To make sure that your 50 MB data plan will last for 30 days, avoid doing the following:

- Stream videos

- Download videos and mp3s

- Download games and other mobile softwares

This way, you can enjoy a longer period of mobile internet browsing. Why would you need to do these anyway when you can do it on your PC or laptop at home?

So that’s it Filipino folks! Follow these simple steps now to start enjoying a cheaper mobile internet anytime, anywhere!

NOTE: Make sure that only Opera Mini and NO other apps are using your mobile internet. You have to log out or exit from other apps that can automatically connect to the internet and consume your data plan or else, say "goodbye" to your extra loads. You know how smart SMART is. :p

Problem is with everything here in phils they answer to no body!!!! nada!

what we need is someone like apple or another big company to launch a class action against them on our behalf....AND make them pay big time......only then will the ripping off of the poor end! Corporate greed here is horrible and nasty! Government also has a lot to answer for, for allowing it to happen!

@Kris: I feel for you, especially as I've been having the same problem! I fear calling the customer service rep too because of the bad experiences I've had with them before. What I intend to do is formally write the management of Smart Communications and perhaps even try to involve some newspaper that can publish about the problem. It really doesn't matter that it's "just" PhP200...it's still not service that you actually used and had to pay for. At the end of the day, Smart was still unjustly enriched!

Always On is crap! I enrolled in Always On 99 - 50 MB for 30 days, but Smart would still SOMETIMES charge me Php10/30 minutes from my prepaid load. The result is they have wrongly deducted more than Php200 from my load already.

What I think was happening was Always On is triggered only when I use 3G. When I use GPRS it's back to Php10/30 minutes. Unfortunately I have no way of controlling when my phone switches from 3G to GPRS because it does it automatically when the signal is weak.

I called customer support about it. We exchanged several phone calls and spent in total several hours on the phone. I told them that my balance said I still had more than 30 MB of data available, so why was I SOMETIMES being charged Php10/30 minutes? It's interesting to note that I have to tell the customer service rep what my data balance is because they can't check it for themselves. They basically just pass information on to the technical department and the billing department and those two take at least 24 hours to respond, and even then, they respond inadequately. Billing department would send a message to the customer rep saying I was charged Php 10/ 30 minutes for using mobile internet. What kind of an explanation is that? Then we would go through the entire thing again. You have to go through hell to try to get a refund from smart, and even then you probably won't succeed. It was extremely frustrating that I just gave up and let it go. It's just a little over Php200 but I felt like Smart just stole it from me.

Smart Internet, like others in the Philippines is dreadfully bad. Anyone who has dealt with this company knows that the managers are cowards who actually run from their customers. Think I am kidding? Try asking the low level person you talk to, if you can have the name and phone number, or email of their manager. They are not allowed to give you that information. Think about it. What kind of business takes your money, provides lousy service, then prevents you from talking to any person who can help correct the situation? It's a joke. And by the way, if you actually see this, it means that the person owning this site does not have a Gestapo mentality and believes in free speech, so give them kudos.

Hello Kevin. Thanks for stopping by!

It depends on how much internet data you consume. Always On 995 has 2G mobile data. I suggest you calculate your mobile data consumption first. Try the Smart Surf Calculator on this link: http://smart.com.ph/NR/rdonlyres/51575B56-477F-42C...

Alternatively, you may also try the 30 days unlimited data plan for only PHP 1,200. That is if you don't mind adding PHP205 and just in case you'll extend your visit for another week more. Hehe. You can use this plan with any apps, surf and stream videos all you want. ^_^ To register, just text UNLI 1200 and send to 211.

    Enjoy your vacation! :)

Greetings Gladys. Thanks for this informative piece. I will be visiting the Philippines in October for 3 weeks from Atlanta, Georgia and was wondering if this would be a good plan for me. I use my smartphone here in the US quite often for news, surfing, email, texting, and the occasional streaming clip everyday. Would the "Always On 995" plan work for me, or do you recommend something else? I will be using an unlocked Android smartphone and I will mainly be in Manila, Boracay, and possibly northern Luzon. I appreciate your help.

@karen, my sister also has the same problem. Problem is, she lives in the province and I can't check her phone right now. Maybe there's something wrong with the settings. I will share it on this page once I've checked the phone and resolved the problem. So far, it still works on my phone.

Hi Kate! Have you already configured your mobile internet settings? If not, you may follow the steps here: http://www1.smart.com.ph/help/prepaid/article/2011...

But if your mobile internet is already good, you may want to restart your cp. Please note that you need at least one peso extra load to make this work. PLease let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for visiting the page jomelyn and sorry for the delayed response!

For video calls, I'm afraid this won't last for 30 days... As I've said, the subscription can last for 30 days if we use Opera Mini browser. Skype is another app and I haven't tried to use ON 99 for skype...

Right now, I'm enjoying MEGA250. This includes unlimited SMS to all networks + 180 minutes of calls to SUN/SMART/TNT and a 90mb data plan! You may want to try it too. Just text MEGA250 to 2477.

thank you for stopping by Spy! I wrote this because my friends were complaining about how expensive data charges are. They are also under the same carrier but they don't know this. Maybe SMART should advertise more about this.
