Colorado Calling: 503-902-8291

Sometimes up to twice a day, my personal cell phone will ring and I will get an automated message regarding my lack of health insurance. It’s an advertising call asking me to call back. I have listened to the entire message, pressed 0 numerous times, trying to get a live person so they can get me off their list. I know they don’t know that I work for a local health care system, nor that I pick and choose my health care options based on my need. They don’t know anything about me. What I know about them is that they are harassing me on a daily basis. This is my cell phone and I can’t even get a live person to speak to so I can get off of their harassing list. I wasn’t aware that any company could call me on a daily basis, let alone twice a day, for anything without my permission.

What I would most like to see, besides the harassing telephone calls to cease and desist, is that my cell phone company give me a credit for every unsolicited telephone call that hits my cell phone. I pay for this. This is my phone. I pay the bill. If you want to send me an unsolicited, automated or otherwise, phone call or TEXT for that matter, then my phone company needs to bill you 10 cents per transaction and that credit needs to be applied to my monthly bill. It think this is more than fair and reasonable since as a general rule, I think the cost for going over minutes is anywhere from double to quadruple that amount.

In order to keep some form of sanity, I have an ongoing joke now. When my phone rings, I state aloud, that’s probably Colorado Calling. At first my friends would give me a strange look followed up by, what are you talking about. So I would explain, I get these calls repeatedly, annoyingly and harassingly…sometimes, multiple times in a row. Today, to emphasis, the phone rang…I gave the usual response and my boss laughed. I picked up the phone and sure enough…Colorado Calling. That in itself wouldn’t be all that phenomenal, or telling, and certainly not psychic on my part since it is happening so frequently that it’s not difficult to be fairly accurate on my predictions. About an hour later though, the phone rang again. Being snarky, I called out…you got it “Colorado Calling!” My boss and I laughed, I was pretty sure it wasn’t or it wouldn’t have been so funny. Only…it was.

I wish the story could end there but on my way home from work I received my third call for the day from the same Colorado number. I honestly feel this is excessive. At minimum, these companies should include a telephone number in their message that we can get off their call list. Chances are if I didn’t answer the three times today, or the other 1500 times you have called, or called you back regarding this lack of coverage, there is a good chance that I am not interested in your advertising. A few months ago, when this started they had a number they wanted you to call to get more information. At the time, I remember thinking I wasn’t sure it was even a US number. Today, I listened again and you can press 1 or you can press 90 to get off their list.

Say what?? Of course I pressed 90. I will let you know if it works.


I certainly hope it works. I noticed this afternoon that I also received another automated call from, goodness another insurance message? I believe it is. The new number is 503-457-1065. Will this one now begin calling me because I am off the old list and now onto a new? The Attorney General’s office indicates that since it isn’t in this area that they don’t have any jurisdiction. I am on the do not call list, or I was at one point. Do we fall off of those?

Besides having my number removed from their list, and billing back the callers for a credit on my account, I would also like a lawyer to place a class action suit against companies that call like this. There is a time and place for automated calls and faxes, even text messages…like if you sign up for them, like if you are part of a group or organization who uses these methods of contact. Those make sense to me. For advertisers to invade my privacy and push things under my nose at every given opportunity…isn’t television and movie theaters, bus sides, billboards, magazines and radio, and Facebook enough?

Here is the thing…at one time advertising helped keep television free to the users. This is true for many venues. So, why not if I am going to be annoyed by marketing, aren’t the marketers paying so I have a telephone in my hand that they might be able to reach me through? I could deal with that. You want to pay my phone bill and give me a free phone with all the bells and whistles and allow me to place some kinds of limits on frequency I can receive these kinds of calls or only receive them at the top of the hour, or only as visual ads running across the phone when I am not using it for an actual phone call or message myself. Have at it! That sounds like a great idea. But until that happens, stop calling me.

      I am a bit slow on here...I like it when there is interaction with other writers but people are busy, and I know when I hop I try to comment and flag for people...If I really like them I follow. You have very interesting insights in your writing...some very intense. I sort of watch for you now, though I don't go visit your wall daily or anything. I have been practicing different short story themes...just trying to understand my own style better, I wish there was a way to have a persons work critiqued...if not here, somewhere.       They are persistent little buggers, aren't they? I spent six months trying to convince one that I was not Billie Holland but rather Bill Holland. Sigh! It was almost worth it to change my name just to end the calls.

      Very true. They also often call back previous clients that they've sunk into something in the past, to either upsell them, renew them, or pitch them something different. But they'll never tell you that :) Your right about their DNC lists. But generally they should, even ethically, be willing to respect when a client, whether potential business or not, requests to be placed on DNC. It is after all, or rather should be, entirely at your discretion as to whether or not you will take the time, to entertain their attempt to talk to you (or should I say sell you something) Colorado calling indeed :) Good work.

      Well, and just because they say they will and can place you on a do not call list...depending on the size of the company, may mean that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Not all systems work, systematically. Odd, isn't it?

      This article was quite engaging. And I find 'Colorado Calling' to be quite comical indeed :) My personal input, although I completely agree with your point view I must say that when it comes to calling lists, telemarketing calls, and automated marketing, the reality is I doubt they will be quote on quote "sued" for this any time soon. Marketing firms and telemarketing agencies will share or sell calling lists between each other. Even though they consistently deny this practice. Quite often enough what transpires as soon as you get on one list, even if you explicitly state you wish to be placed on their 'Do Not Call List' you may start to receive calls from other marketing companies. At times this may be no fault of your own. Premium text message services that charge astronomical rates for messages received are for example one way to end up on a variety of calling lists. Exhibit caution when entering personal details online or on unverified or disreputable websites. This is another way you may find yourself being flooded with calls. I'd most certainly looking into the 'National Do Not Call List' and see if that can help you. But I completely agree with your article and can see how painstakingly aggravating this level of harassment can become. One piece of advice. Always explicitly state to the company "I wish to be placed on your Do Not Call List" Most times when we receive these calls its so time consuming and frustrating that we may simply say "Stop calling me" and disconnect. The rep on the other end would simply then disposition the call and you would be called back by another rep within a few days. When you explicitly state however that you wish to be placed on their DNC they are legally obligated to do so ... but unfortunately this doesn't mean they necessarily always will. But in your case as the call is automated this may only add to your mounting frustrations. Best of luck :) Great read :)
