How to Backup Your Smartphone

Smartphones should always be backed up just like computers. After all, they store a large amount of important data, including all your contacts! Losing your phone to theft, misplacement, or to damage, would mean the loss of valuable information if you don’t have it backed up.

When a phone is lost or damaged, you can lose not only your personal contacts, but your photos, videos, call history, text messaging, personal application settings, as well as short reminders or notes that you may have saved on your phone.

You don’t realize how much you depend on your smartphone’s data until it's no longer available. For these reasons, many popular smartphone devices have simple backup capabilities that you should get into the habit of using.

Apple iPhones

Apple iPhones are very easy to backup. Apple uses its iTunes system to backup all your Apple devices in one location, and it's very user friendly.

Simply plug in your iPhone through the USB port to your computer. iTunes will automatically detect your device and begin first by checking for any updates in software to your iPhone, then will begin syncing all your data.

You have a choice of the data that you wish to have synced, such as mobile applications, contacts, pictures, videos, notes, and calendars. It also saves your recent phone call lists, as well as text messages in a unique file. In the event you need to replace your device, iTunes allows you to restore your data onto a new device.

Apple also offers an iCloud system if you are mobile and work from a laptop or tablet in addition to your smartphone. There is a free trial period, but will cost you a yearly fee if you decide to keep the service.

Android

The Android smartphone uses a “cloud” backup system through Google. All Google information, such as Gcal and Gmail can be saved in one location. The only thing is with backing up contacts, if you don’t save your contacts on your phone as “Google Contacts”, the system won’t be able to backup this information.

Android unfortunately doesn’t use a computer to backup your smartphone information. There is the option of using a third party to setup a backup file for you. This may cost you a fee, but will be worth it if anything happens to your smartphone.

All you need to do is sign-up with the third party backup service, plug in your phone through an USB port, and it will automatically process the backup.

There is also the option of backing up your smartphone’s information to a SD card, so it can always be transferred to another device with the same capabilities. Once you have the application downloaded on your computer, you will be given the options to “Delete”, “Restore”, or “Backup” information.

Blackberry

The Blackberry uses a desktop system to back up your mobile device. The application is simply installed on your computer for use. Once you have this installed, choose “backup”, then choose “options” to designate data you want to backup.

By simply clicking “backup” again, you are set. It will automatically save your Smartphone information in a file, so you can either save on your computer or an USB device.

Deciding whether you should opt for smartphone insurance can be confusing. It can be just as difficult to decide on purchasing an extended warranty or insurance on any equipment or device that you may purchase.

When it comes to your smartphone, it's a matter of what you can afford, and what risks you are willing to take. Here's an overview of each choice to help you make an informed decision.

Standard Insurance from Your Mobile Provider

Most mobile phone companies offer customers mobile phone insurance, regardless of the type of phone you purchase. On average, this insurance coverage costs anywhere from $4.99 to $7.99 per month, charged to your phone bill.

The only catch to this, and what may not be told to you, is that there is a deductible that must be paid if something happens to your device, whether it can be fixed or not. It is up to the insurance company’s representative to determine if the mobile phone will be replaced with a new phone, or sent to be fixed. Either way, you are without a phone for a period of time.

Insurance from Independent Mobile Providers

If you feel that you are being rushed to make a decision in the mobile company’s store when purchasing your new smartphone, remember, you have 30 days to make a decision, and the optional insurance is in addition to the one year manufacturer’s warranty. This gives you time to shop around for what will work best for you.

There are two popular third party mobile insurance providers that can be found online: 1) Safeware and 2) SquareTrade. Both companies have different prices depending on the smartphone device you own, as well as the network type you are using (3G or 4G). In addition, their costs are usually charged by the year, and not monthly.

Safeware includes coverage for dropping your phone, water damage from spills, and even theft. SquareTrade offers a warranty, and not insurance. They do not offer coverage for lost or stolen phones. If a phone can’t be fixed, they will, however, offer you the full payment for a new phone.

The Value of your Phone

Before deciding on additional insurance coverage for your smartphone, decide on how much it would cost you to replace your phone if it accidentally got damaged, lost, or stolen within an average two year mobile contract. If you purchased your phone for $500, the cost of insurance for two years may be warranted to buy insurance to protect your investment.

Some mobile insurance companies also offer a “buy-back” option for their customers after the contract expires. This may be a great incentive, even if you only get back a small percentage of what you paid for the smartphone. This is less money you have to use to purchase a new, upgraded model.

So take into consideration how much you spent on the phone, how much you will spend in insurance in a year or two, and what is the deductible in the event something happens to your phone before opting for additional insurance. Considering the prices of smartphones, and the accidents that can happen even if you are careful, it may definitely make it beneficial to purchase additional mobile device coverage.
