Setting Up Surveillance on a Budget

I love the James Bond movies for "Q" and all the super cool electronic gadgets he provides our dear old "007"! My personal favourite was the invisible car, I mean how cool is that?!!

All these marvelous real spy gadgets have got to cost an arm and a leg right? Not necessarily! It seems that it is possible to set up your own personal surveillance on a shoe string budget.

In this hub we take a look at spy gadgets that you or anyone else can buy and use. To make it simple I'm going to divide them into three main categories - AUDIO, VIDEO and COMMUNICATIONS!

Electronic Listening Device - EX ELECTRONIX EXPRESS
Electronic Listening Device - EX ELECTRONIX EXPRESS

Use this scanner to hear what people across the park are saying. Listen to voices and sounds from 300 feet away and record 120 seconds.

Audio Bugs and more

Knowledge is power and if you can hear your enemy before hand you know what to expect. Audio devices can be planted in a room like they show in the movies, but its a whole lot more fun if you can operate them hands on.

A simple and sensitive mike can be slipped into your pocket for the rest of your team to hear your conversation with a suspect! Of course it beats being wired in the traditional sense where you have a bulky device attached to your body. This little gadget can be slipped right into your pocket.

If you are yet to establish contact and still want to spy on the subject you may want to use this hand held listening device that can catch sounds 300 feet away. You don't have to risk getting up close and personal to eavesdrop on a private conversation anymore. What's more it has a recording feature allowing you to record what you hear as well. Of course since its not a real spy gadget you can only record 2 minutes worth of conversation on it! But hey that's what upgrades are for :)

Video Inputs and incriminating photos

A picture speaks a thousand words they say and incriminating photos can be devastatingly effective. Of course we are no longer stuck with black and white photos that take ages to develop and also film that can get exposed. Now we have digital cameras that allow us to take pictures and videos of whomever we want, whenever we want and where ever we want.

While the average smartphone is a gadget that is capable of handling this, its far more fun to play with a miniature camera. And specially more so when the person under survelliance does not know that the coat hook is actually a mini camera. This covertly housed mini camera can take colour videos and access audio. It has a motion sensor and get activated when it detects motion.

That little digital alarm clock also houses a deadly camera. It includes a remote control which allows you to remotely activate audio and video recording. It will also function as a proper alarm with five sweet songs and the regular beeping sounds to chose from. To a person not in the know it will look like a perfectly normal digital alarm clock. (Evil Laugh!)

This pair of sun glasses are actually a super cool gadget! It allows you to listen to your MP3 songs, take pictures, and record audio and video clips. So it looks like a normal set of glares and viola you can take videos and pictures of people in action and store them. If its just the songs that you want to listen to, you can store about 4 hours worth of music in them. Now is that cool or what?!

Lend someone a pen, and pass along evidence in the hidden USB device.

Communication is a two way street

Calling for backup can be a sticky business in the spy game. Here are a set of communication gadgets that any spy would be glad to have in a tight spot!

It looks like a pen. It writes like a pen, but is it just a pen? No its a sophisticated communication gadget. Looks and writes with a normal pen so no one will know you are actually recording them. It has a USB drive that you can connect to your computer. It can record up to 3 1/2 hours of high resolution of video at a time, which can be archived on your computer. Its battery can be charged via the USB port.

Look at your watch and call for backup at the same time with this pair of Wrist Watch Walkie Talkies. They have a range of a mile and a half and can be great to take along on a camping trip. They also allow you to communicate with the other device with great clarity. Its not just the children who will want to try out this watch walkie talkie!

That's my take on cool spy gadgets that anyone can buy! There are of course a whole lot of other cool gadgets out there and to list them all is beyond the scope of this hub.

I'd personally love to own the sunglasses! What about you?

Actually the wrist watches really rang my bell! I live on an island and know people who use walkie talkies instead of cellphones. Thanks for the entertaining and informative Hub, voted up, useful and funny! James Bond lovers of the world, unite... :)

If I wasn't paranoid before, I am now :-). This is brilliant. I'm a bit of a gadget geek and I too love to watch the Bond movies to see what they come up with next. My favorite has to be Little Nellie, the helicopter in a suitcase or 4 to be precise. I like your choices especially the pen, there have been a few meetings I've attended where that would have come in handy. Thanks for an interesting and entertaining hub.

Ok. I vote for sunglasses. They are functional (as all spy gadgets are), but they do everything a person would want their spy equipment to do. They are the ultimate all-in-one spy tool. This is the coolest hub I have read in a while.
