What Is A Domain Name

First and foremost, offline you will need to decide on two names prior to starting your online store, your store name and the other name, your domain name. They can be the same. The name of your online store should be a name that is short and catchy to make search engine friendly. Your domain name is your website address.

For example if your selling cookies and store name is “Sally’s Cookies”, your domain name should be relatively close to www.sallyscookies.com. It is strongly suggested selecting several names. Popular domain names can run scarce and your first choice may not be available. If your preferred domain name is available today, it best to purchase it today, as it may not be able tomorrow. Your online store name should be the same or relatively close to your domain name. Selecting the same or relatively close domain name as a store will encourange search engine friendly rankings by increasing key word relevancy throughout your online store.

It is not uncommon for business owners to select mulpitple domain names and then purchase multiple domain extensions as to prevent direct competition in the market place to protect there business and website name.

For example if my first choice domain name is sallyscookies.com and that domain name is available I might want to also want to purchase sallyscookies.net, sallyscookies.info, sallycookies.us and so on to prevent direct competitiononline or any confusion amongst potential customers. Again I stress the importance of retaining several potential domain names and reviewing them against their availability before making your decision. One of the main key fundamentals of an online business is branding and that all commences with securing a good fsearch friendly engine name or names for your online store.

Upon my research and experience a domain name for your online store can run anywhere between $3.99 for the year and up depending on the domain extension you choose most dot.com domain names run about $12.99 for the year. By using a different domain name extension, you may be able to increase you chances of getting at your first choice of a domain name. The popular domain extensions are dot.com, and dot.net.

Again keep in mind key names become keywords and should be used throughout repetitively throughout the website content for optimal search engine rankings. So choose your names wisely if you want to be recognized on your efforts effortlessly.
