Facebook Privacy Issues: How Do I Temporarily Deactivate My Facebook Account?

Updated on June 27, 2011

20110127 Update: Facebook has been updated with SSL (ie "https://" service) if you need it, but it may not be available in your country; check out this article here on how to enable it.

How Do I Temporarily Deactivate My Facebook Account?

So you are at the point in your life where you reminisce about the time when you don't have to login into your Facebook account after every half-an-hour just to clear all the unwanted cr*p posts on your wall? You used to have a life but now you are merely a willing slave to your Facebook account? A serial clicker, if you will, whose main reason for existence is to check on Mafia Wars every hour?
Well, alrighty then, you are about to discover the temporary relief that only a disabled Facebook account can bring. ;)
IF you want full relief, ie delete Facebook, click on http://hubpages.com/hub/Delete-Facebook-Account.

Deactivate Facebook
Follow the steps below:

The Steps To Temporarily Suspend Your Facebook Account:

Login into your Facebook account. From the upper right menu, select "Account", then "Account Settings" and you will come to this page. Click the bottommost field "deactivate".

Now you will come to a page where Facebook will display some of your friends' avatars and the message "FRIEND_NAME will miss you". Nice try! Remember to check "Email opt out" otherwise you will be inundated with friends messages (sent by Facebook).

At Last, Some Relief!

Understand that you are now a non-participant in Facebook, your friends will not be able to send you any invitations or to tag you (oh what joy!); and you will not want to login into Facebook, as by doing so, you will reactivate the account. Also, your wall will not be cleared of old posts, which will remain until you inadvertently reactivate the account.

Enjoy your temporary relief! ;)
And while you bask in the bliss, read this hub http://hubpages.com/hub/Delete-Facebook-Account and especially note steps 1 and 2 of Preparation to give you an idea of what you need to prepare for, should you decide to nuke your Facebook account. :)
