Difference Between iPad 2 and the original iPad
The very first iPad came out in the United States in April 2010. The second generation iPad 2 was released for sale in the United States on March 11, 2011. For the purpose of this article, we will call the former simply "iPad" or "original iPad". (People don't call it iPad 1).
The design of the iPad and iPad 2 looks essentially the same. Except that the iPad2 has two cameras -- one in the front and one in back. The iPad did not have any camera at all, which many people complained about.
iPad2 thinner and lighter
The iPad 2 is also thinner and lighter. iPad2 has a thickness of 0.34 inch which is 0.19 inch thinner than the original. The width and height of iPad 2 are 7.31 inch and 9.50 inch respectively. Depending on the model of iPad 2, it weighs between 1.33 pounds to 1.35 pounds, which is lighter than the original iPad which weighs between 1.6 and 1.7 pounds.
As for the display size of the iPad 2, it has a 9.7-inch diagonal LED back-lit display with pixel dimensions of 1024-by-768.
Processor and Memory of iPad
Underneath the hood, the original iPad uses the Apple A4 processor. The iPad2 uses a faster 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 processor which has clock speed twice that of the A4. The iPad run on 256 MB of RAM; whereas, the iPad 2 runs on 512 MB.
The iPad2 comes with a newer version of the operating system. Original iPad came with iOS 4.2.1 (although it can be upgraded). The iPad 2 comes with iOS4.3.
iPad Model Numbers
And finally, the model numbers on the two iPads are obviously different.
The model number can be found on the back of the iPad or you can go to Settings -> General -> About -> Regulatory from the Home screen.
The original iPad will show A1219 (WiFi-only model) or A1337 (Wi-Fi/3G/A-GPS capable model). The iPad2 comes in 3 models:
