Do you want free calls? Is there an alternative for Skype? Voipbuster is the answer.

Updated on March 30, 2010

I am an happy costumer.

Are you still struggling with telephone bills? Do you call other countries regularly?

I'm not living in my home country, but my family and old friends are all there. I used to spend loads of money calling my parents. I remember buying cards at the post office that I would have to call a number and then type a number code from the card on the telephone...and still, I would see my money fly away for a couple of minutes.

Fortunately I discovered VoipBuster. I have been using it for around 3 or 4 years now.

Voipbuster belongs to a company from Germany called Betamax. They also have other options apart from Voipbuster. (You might find another one better than VoipBuster for you)

How does it work?

Well, the first thing you need to do is to create an account and download the free software from www.voipbuster.com

Once you have the software installed on your computer and created an account, you can do a free call (limited to 1 minute) to any of the Free destinations. I advise you to do some tests to see if you like it until you actually top up your account with some money.

Money you said? Isn't it free? Well, let's get this explained:

With Voipbuster (like in Skype) you can call another Voipbuster account (always free) or call mobile phones and landlines. Regarding calling other Voipbuster accounts you only need to add the nickname of the person to your list and then you just need to check if the person is online...if the other person is online just click on it and start talking for free. (you don't even need money in your account)

If you want to call landlines and mobile phones then you can check the prices at voipbuster website.

The good news is that calling to landlines is very cheap. The better news is that if you top up your account you will get many countries (landlines) for free for four months. So, when you put 10 Euros in your account (Paypal accepted) it will give you the number of days that you can call for free to some countries. After those days expire you can still use the money on your account but you won't have free calls anymore. (normal rates will apply, very cheap ones)

If you want to keep calling for free, just top up again and the free calls will be activated again for another four months.

Every time you make a call you will be showed the rate for that call. So you will know if you can relax or speak fast. :)

The other good news is that Voipbuster can be used via SIP. Basically Sip is a system that will allow you to set up Voipbuster on your mobile phone. (I know that on iPhone it works fine, with iSip app. Only on Wi-Fi connections)

So, to sum up:

1. Create your VoipBuster Account

2. Download and Install the free software

3. Test it with another Voipbuster account or calling for a minute to one of the "free" countries

4. Top up your account

5. Enjoy your free calls to many countries landlines and good prices to mobile phones and other countries landlines.

6. Let me know what you think of it. :)

Do not forget that the prices and rules might change and this hub is just informative. Please check Voipbuster website for more accurate and up to date details.

Hi Lars. I'm glad you enjoyed Voipbuster. I really don't make anything by promoting it, it is just a service I use and saved me loads of money in the last 4 years or so. I mentioned to some friends and they loved it and then I decided to let everyone here know. :)

      Cheers

Hi, I have tried it since yesterday calling from Sweden 2 Thailand and it works great. The sound quality could have been better but is good enough. And yes it`s very cheap indeed I will stick to this game plan since my Thaigirlfriend calls 2 Thailand every day.

      Dear "from Oman",

I'm sorry to find that you hare having a bad experience.

I never tried that one, but I can say that Voipbuster always worked fine for me and have nothing to complain about them. I actually already saved loads of money with this and that is the reason I wanted to share this info with everyone as Skype is a lot more known and it wouldn't save you as much.

From your nick I understand you live in Oman, is this correct? If so, that might actually be the problem. Oman is one of the few countries that is blocking voip calls. I have friends living in there that used to live in UK and they aren't able to use most of the call programs. All the ones that for some time they manage to use were blocked. They used Voipbuster in UK and they are not using it in there anymore.

I don't want to say that is the problem but my guess is that it has something to do with your bad experience.

From what I know it is illegal to use Voip calls in Oman. I'm really sorry.

I tried smslisto which belongs to the same group and guess what it is a big scam. I lost 10 Euro and can't make one single phone call. It keeps telling me that the other party did not respond, though I tried calling many countries , even tried to call my phone number but it didn't work.

I have been using Voipbuster for around 4 to 5 years now to call my friends for free (Australia, US, France, Spain) and it works perfect.

Recently I have bought a SIP phone which makes it possible to use Voipbuster without having to turn on your computer.

Apart from the fact that it's much easier the call quality also seems to better with the SIP phone compared with using the PC in combination with a headset.

In the Netherlands it's also possible to buy a so called Voip-In number from Voipbuster. Now people can call me on a landline number although I am only use Voipbuster and do not have a regular landline.

Betamax has many different labels comparable with Voipbuster, depending what destination you call beste you pick the brand with the best prices for your destinations.

      Hi LRobbins.

I promise I don't work for the company or have any relation with them apart from being a client for more than 2 years now. It is funny because I believe Voipbuster belongs to a German company.(Betamax) I would imagine it was well known in there.

I use it to call other countries landlines...it is free for the countries I need to call.

I really like the system of topping up money and having minutes free, when the minutes expire (after 4 months) I can still use the money and only then I need to top up again. I tried many things as I'm leaving away from my family but Voipbuster was the solution. I use it to call my family and they use to call me.

Of course everybody is different but I love this service.

      Thanks for reading.

Great info on free and low cost calls.

Long distance and international calls do not have to cost an arm and a leg anymore, in light of the technological revolution in the telecommunication field.

      Thanks for the info.
