Karbonn A18 vs Sony Xperia Tipo vs Spice Mi-425

Updated on September 17, 2014

If any of you people are wondering which smartphone to buy under the Rs.10,000 bracket please pay close attention to this hub. I’m promising you, that you will not be disappointed after reading this hub. This hub concentrates only on the top end smartphones under the Rs.10,000 category. So all the smartphones listed here will be priced close to that range. I’m comparing three of the best here, and they are: Sony Xperia Tipo, Karbonn A18 and Spice Mi-425.

First of all let me tell everyone something. If you are brand conscious, please do go for the Sony Xperia Tipo. It is the best smartphone for brand conscious people. As for the others, you can either go with the Karbonn A18 or the Spice Mi-425. You will have a clear decision after going through this hub. So let’s jump into things.

All three phones support 2G and 3G networks. Here are their operating frequencies:

Sony Xperia Tipo: GSM - 850, 900, 1800, 1900; UMTS – 2100
Karbonn A18: GSM - 900, 1800; UMTS – 2100
Spice Mi-425: GSM - 900, 1800, UMTS - 2100

Processor and GPU

Sony Xperia Tipo: Sony Xperia Tipo has an 800 MHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor and a 200 MHz Adreno GPU. The processor is not really fast owing to the fact that there are other phones having a 1 GHz processor.

Karbonn A18 – This phone has a 1 GHz processor. It is powered by a PowerVR SGX531 GPU.

Spice Mi-425 – This phone too has a 1 GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor and an Adreno 200 GPU.

Sony Xperia Tipo – Xperia Tipo has a 3.2 inch capacitative touchscreen at a resolution of 320x480 pixels. There are additional features like scratch-resistance, handwriting recognition and gesture support.

Karbonn A18 – Karbonn A18 has 4.3 inch capacitative touchscreen at a resolution of 480x800 (this is the truth). The screen is made of an In Plane Switching panel (IPS) which prevents color distortions.

Spice Mi-425 – This phone has a 4.1 inch screen with a resolution of 480x800.

Operating System

Xperia Tipo and Karbonn A18 runs on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. The Spice Mi-425 runs on Android 2.3, Gingerbread. But the company has promised an update to version 4.0, which will be announced soon.

Xperia Tipo – Tipo has a 3.2 megapixel camera. It doesn’t have a secondary camera. No flash is provided at the rear.

Karbonn A18 – This phone has a 5 megapixel camera at the rear and a 1.3 megapixel camera at the front. The rear side is also equipped with a LED flash, which lets you take pictures at dim light.

Spice Mi-425 – Mi-425 too has a 5 megapixel camera at the rear with LED flash. The VGA camera at the front lets you video call.

Storage and RAM

All the three phones have 512 MB of RAM. This is a good amount of RAM, keeping in mind the amount you pay. Xperia Tipo has an internal storage of 2.5 GB. Karbonn A18 has an internal memory of 2.55 GB of which 503 MB is available to the user. Spice Mi-425 has only 140 MB of internal memory.

Karbonn A18 and Xperia Tipo have a 1500 mAh battery. The Spice Mi-425 is powered by a 2000 mAh battery. So it will last you longer compared to the other two phones. This is what happens with all the smartphones that are releasing nowadays. It might have all the features in the world, but it will lack some fundamental feature.

The problem about comparing these phones with respect to their price is that all the three phones are priced similarly. Xperia Tipo will cost you around Rs.9500, Karbonn A18 will cost you Rs.9790 and Spice Mi-425 will cost you Rs.9999.

My Choice

My choice is obvious. If you can buy an Xperia under Rs.10,000 you could go for it blindly. So my choice is the Xperia Tipo. Please do keep in mind that it is my opinion. Other people might feel different. I chose the Tipo because:

  1. It’s from the famous range of Xperia smartphones.
  2. Even though it only has a 3.2 inch screen, its ppi is same as the other 2 phones. This means that the images will be more defined in this phone. Also the display looks more appealing.
  3. Has the guarantee from Sony

What more can you ask for? The other 2 manufacturers do not have a proper chain of customer service. But looking at the specifications Karbonn A18 wins the battle here. You can buy the Karbonn A18 if you want a super performer that is not from a major brand. Spice Mi-425 is also similar to the Karbonn A18, but Spice is not as good a brand as Karbonn.
