Katleigh has recently become interested in the awesome world of Elder Scrolls and loves coming up with new, interesting builds.

Fallout Shelter is a smartphone extension of one of Bethesda's best-selling series, Fallout. You are the Overseer of a Vault in the post-apocalyptic Wasteland, and it is your lot to assign their jobs, train their skills, and make they stay alive.

What are S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Stats?

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Stats, usually shortened to S.P.E.C.I.A.L., is an in-game mechanism that determines your Dwellers' efficiency. They affect their life in the vault, their value in combat, and their ability to survive in the Wasteland.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. is an acronym and indicates one of 7 different attributes. They are as follows:

  • S: Strength
  • P: Perception
  • E. Endurance
  • C: Charisma
  • I: Intelligence
  • A: Agility
  • L: Luck

Much of the combat, Wasteland, and quest-related information is speculative. Bethesda has made very little official.

What Does Strength Do?

In the Vault

The higher a Dweller's Strength, the faster they produce energy in Power Generators and Nuclear Reactors. A high Strength can also be used to craft certain outfits and weapons more quickly, like tiered Military Fatigues.

In Combat

A high Strength level may allow your Dweller to cause more damage when using a weapon.

In the Wasteland

A high Strength level allows Dwellers to pry open lockers and chests in the Wasteland. It may also allow your Dwellers to carry more back with them after exploring.

During Quests

The higher a Dwellers' Strength stat, the higher the attack damage during quest-related combat. This makes them very useful on Quests with difficult bosses.

What Does Perception Do?

In the Vault

The higher a Dweller's Perception, the faster they produce water in Water Treatment rooms. It may also increase combat damage your Dweller can inflict on Raiders, Deathclaws, Feral Ghouls, or various pests while in the Vault. Dwellers with high Perception can also craft certain weapons and outfits faster, such as various Armored Vault Suits and a lot of Brotherhood of Steel gear.

In Combat

A high Perception stat may give your Dweller a higher chance to land critical hits.

In the Wasteland

Dwellers with high Perception may find it easier to locate abandoned buildings. It may also make it easier for your Dwellers to find loot, like junk, weapons, and outfits while in the Wasteland.

During Quests

There are no known perks of having a high Perception stat during Quests, other than the aforementioned benefit of finding loot.

What Does Endurance Do?

In the Vault

The higher your Dweller's Endurance, the more health points they gain on leveling up. This system does not work retroactively, so in order to gain the maximum number of health points per level, increase your Dwellers Endurance as soon as possible. The formula for health point gain is Level + Endurance = Health Points.

Like all other stats on this list, a high Endurance stat can allow your Dwellers to craft certain weapons and outfits more quickly, like Wasteland Gear.

In Combat

Dwellers with high Endurance usually have high health, so they make useful guards and can fight stronger enemies with less worry.

In the Wasteland

A high Endurance stat greatly reduces the amount of radiation damage your Dwellers receive in the Wasteland. If he or she has an Endurance stat of 11 or more (achievable through outfits and training rooms) your Dweller is completely immune to radiation damage in the Wasteland. Please note that this doesn't count during combat damage, and enemies can still affect your Dwellers.

During Quests

As mentioned before, high Endurance can be very useful on quests with difficult boss fights because they tend to have high health.

What Does Charisma Do?

In the Vault

Charisma serves many functions in the Vault. Dwellers with a high Charisma have improved fertility rates (they takes less time to dance in the Living Quarters.) They also take less time to send out signals in the Radio Room, which boosts the entire Vault's happiness. The higher a Dweller's Charisma, the faster they can be modified in the Barbershop.

A high Charisma can also allow you to craft certain outfits and potentially weapons faster, like Nightwear.

In Combat

There are no known combat benefits to having a high Charisma.

In the Wasteland

High Charisma allows your Dwellers to trade more effectively with Wandering Merchants and are more likely to make friends with Ghouls and other Wastelanders.

During Quests

High Charisma may unlock additional dialogue options that allow you to avoid combat or gain additional items.

What Does Intelligence Do?

In the Vault

There are many benefits to having Dwellers with a high Intelligence stat. A high Intelligence stat allows your Dwellers to make Stimpaks and Radaways more quickly in Medbays and Science Labs.

Intelligence also makes a big impact on how quickly your Dwellers level up. The difference between a Dweller with an Intelligence stat of 1 and another with a stat of 2 is that the first Dweller levels up twice as fast as the second.

This stat also allows your Dwellers to craft certain weapons and outfits more efficiently, notably Institute Rifles.

In Combat

There are no known benefits to having a high Intelligence stat during combat. However, the experience point bonus boost still applies and as a latent effect will allow your Dweller to level faster.

In the Wasteland

Dwellers with High Intelligence can assist strangers by offering medical help or advice in the Wasteland and gain more experience.

During Quests

High intelligence may allow your Dwellers to unlock special dialogue options.

What Does Agility Do?

In the Vault

A high Agility stat allows your Dwellers to prepare food faster. It also allows Dwellers to craft certain outfits and weapons more efficiently, like the Handyman Jumpsuit.

In Combat

Your Dweller's Agility stat may determine how quickly they reload weapons during combat.

In the Wasteland

There are no known benefits to a high Agility stat in the Wasteland, other than the combat-related perks.

During Quests

Other than combat-related benefits, a high Agility stat doesn't help during Quests.

What Does Luck Do?

In the Vault

The higher the Luck stat of a Dweller, the more likely they are to successfully rush a room. This proves to be very useful when unlocking certain achievements and to quickly restock lost food, water, and power.

In Combat

A high Luck stat may increase the likelihood of landing critical hits during combat.

In the Wasteland

A Dweller may be more likely to find Caps in the Wasteland if they have a higher Luck stat.

During Quests

Other than the Wasteland-related benefits, there are no known bonuses to having a high Luck stat during quests.
