Fix New Emails Not Showing on Android Cell Phone Mail App

Updated on April 14, 2014

Cell Phone Not Receiving New Emails

So your new emails are not appearing on your android cell phone? I’ve had this problem a number of times on phone. I noticed that when I’d go home there would be a ton of unread, new emails on my desktop PC but there would be no (or very little) new mail was showing up on my phone

This doesn’t appear to happen to everyone. I know a couple android users who never experience this problem. For those of us that experience this repeat bug, it can be a bit maddening.

For disclosure purposes, I use AOL mail (yes there are still some of us out there that use this) and I really have no technical expertise on cell phone operating systems, POP (post office protocol), IMAP (Internet messaging access protocol) or other various related technical ‘droid’ email related topics. I’ll just run you through what worked for me and hopefully it helps you.

What I Tried to Do Prior to Calling Verizon Customer Support

(By the way Verizon Customer support number is 800-922-0204)

I tried a few things first. These are very rudimentary things that you probably have tried already.

I did a ‘restart’ on the phone

I shut the phone down completely

I waited for the email auto-refresh to cycle

I manually refreshed my email

None of these solved the problem permanently. So then I called Verizon customer support.

Verizon Wireless Customer Support

I use Verizon Wireless and after number of failed attempts described above, they suggested that I remove my AOL account from the phone completely and then add it again.

I did this on an LG Fusion Phone. If your phone is another model it might not work the same way but hopefully this is close enough to get you started.

(Did I mention the Verizon Customer support number is 800-922-0204? This is a pain to find.)

Just above my index finger is the "square" button in lower left corner.
Just above my index finger is the "square" button in lower left corner.

Steps to Deleting Email Account and Adding Again

OK, on the LG Fusion phone there is a button with a square on it in the lower left corner. This button is not one of the icons on your screen. It is the furthest left corner button at the bottom. You can see it whether the phone is on or off.

I’m not sure what this button is called but it takes me to a number of options including “settings” so….

Press the button in lower left corner with square on it.

Press “Settings” (you’ll see a sprocket / gear icon with the word “Settings” at bottom)

Then scroll down to “Accounts & Sync” and press it.

The screen will populate with a bunch of email services. Find and the press the button email account you want to remove. If yours is not on there I believe there is an “other”option for you to select. (My AOL account was already populated in this list)

No you want to install, so to speak, the email account back onto your phone.

Add Email Account on Android

Again… This is geared toward Fusion phone but hopefully you can do it on yours too…

Press your email account icon on your phone

Then click the same “block” button I lowest left corner of front of your phone that you did above

Press the “more” button

Press “Accounts” (not “Account Settings” just the one that says “Accounts”

Then press the “New Account” button that appears at the bottom of the screen

Choose the account that you want to add

Sign into your account.

Hit the “next” button and follow the steps to re-establish your email account. You may need to power your phone on and off again and you’ll be all set.

This Actually Gets Your Email to Populate Again But….

This fix actually works! The problem is it:

Only works temporarily

Who the heck wants to do this every time you want to retrieve mail your phone?!

One other problem I ran into…….

The Other Problem

After a couple of times of removing and reloading my email account, I found that I could not do this anymore. Basically, I’d remove my account and it wouldn't disappear. This is hard to explain and I won’t bore you with details, let’s just say it baffled Verizon customer support as well. They decided that a “Hard Reset”was the cure. Fortunately I asked what a hard reset was and what it would do to my phone. They explained that it would reset my entire system hopefully fixing the problem but that it would wipe out all of my phone numbers and all of my applications. In other words, no more contacts or apps would appear on my cell phone after the hard reset.

This is a hassle I did not want to endure, so I told them to skip it and I would search for some solutions on my own.

Ideas I Tried to Circumvent Email Not Populating on Phone

Here are two things I tried that really did not satisfy me but certainly ensured I was able to get my newest email instantly

I’ll bet there’s an application for your email account. Try it. I downloaded the AOL application. I hated it because I had to hit about six buttons to check my email. Try the apps for your own respective email service, they might have one that gives you instant email updates to your phone and ease of access. The AOL app stinks for this purpose

Go in through Google and check your mail. Again, lots of navigation and pushing buttons, a bit of a hassle but will always work in a pinch.

How I Fixed The Problem of New Email Not Showing on Cell

One thing I have learned is that when in doubt, there is an application or applications out there that can save the day. I did some research on email applications for Android. The one I am currently using is “Maildroid”

I downloaded the free Maildroid app. There is just a tiny, unobstructive ad that runs along the bottom of the screen. You can avoid this with the ‘paid’ version but so far I don’t see any reason to pay for this app especially since the ad is out of the way.

If you do not know how to download apps on your phone click here as this post might help

Honestly, my only motivation here is to get new emails reliably, be notified instantly, and have one touch access to my mail so set up for me was real easy. I just downloaded the Maildroid app, added my account info, and then pressed the auto set up button. The whole process took barely minutes.

A paper airplane appears on your cell phone when you have new mail with Maildroid (sorry for my bad rendition of a plane ;)

Did This App Fix The Email Not Loading Problem?

I have Maildroid running alongside the‘stock’ problematic Android email app and Maildroid so far is kicking butt. New emails populate reliably on Maildroid and the stock application that came on the phone is still sputtering (poorly) along.

Maildroid puts a little paper airplane at the top of my phone when new email arrives. You can also set it to vibrate, light up the LED or make a sound when new mail comes in.

Access to most recent emails is easy. Just press your MailDroid icon, pick your account and your inbox will open up.

So Is Maildroid The Right Answer for You Guys Out There?

First, let me say that I am not endorsing the Mail Droid application over any other email application. That said, I like it because it was easy to set up and I started seeing new mail in my inbox right away. It probably didn't hurt that it was the first of only a few I tried. First impressions are everything:-)

If you want to try something else or give something more sophisticated a shot try K-9 or try looking into other mail apps that are more tailored to your needs.

So I was having trouble getting my new e-mails. After trying everything I could think of I shut the phone down and when I went to get my e-mail it said my password had changed and to enter the new one. And yes, I had changed my password. so I re-signed in and new e-mails were there.

Try a third party app like I suggest above (though it doesn't have to be that app). Later version phones seem to work better but if you have issues, there's always an app solution my friend. Thanks for stopping by Dshows and thanks AndroidFan!!

My Verizon LG Smartphone has quit receiving my emails for the third time in 2 years. Verizon clerks have no idea how to fix it. I am waiting patiently til my 2 year contract expires in July so I can get an upgraded phone.

If emails stop to appear in the phone life becomes hell. It is a very common problem in Android phones. Sometimes, the problem automatically disappears and sometimes it becomes difficult to solve. You have given a solution and I'll try it during my next email failure. Very helpful hub, keep writing such good pieces for everyone's benefits.

Thank you for your info, have had the exact same problem. Went to Verizon store and the associate there acted as if she had never heard of this problem. She removed aol from my phone and then reinstalled it. It worked for minutes and stopped loading, I had 470 unread emails.

I will try this, thank you for sharing .

Finally a solution that worked immediately!! I'm in the process of selling a house and not being able to receive & respond to important emails has been so frustrating. I downloaded the app and began receiving little paper airplanes within seconds ;-) Also loved that I was able to sync up more than one email account so I'm no longer missing important things. Thanks again

This is a very helpful post. I am having the same problem and will try maildroid. I was also told to uninstall and reinstall the account, but that isn't much of a solution because eventually the problem starts again, and you never know when until you start to notice missed emails.
