Updated on May 18, 2018

Technology is what separates us from the animals. It is an ongoing quest additional knowledge and the good it is capable of doing for us.

Those folks fortunate enough to own one sometimes take it for granted

Why is owning one so important?

These little pieces of equipment are a way of life in the modern technological age. Schools have them, nearly every job requires using one and basically everywhere it seems there is one to be found. The focus is having one to do just about everything imaginable. The importance of having it readily at hand and knowing how to use it to enhance life is immeasurable on so many levels.

These machines used to access the web are needed in so many ways in everyday life. Look at these examples. With the need so extremely high it is almost impossible to get along without one. Why do people "need" one?

What is the importance?

Everyone needs one at the ready

Countless people take for granted every person has a computer. Everything task appears to be online or the web. Making the connection to the web means owning one or having unlimited access to it. Whether in the form of a laptop, smartphone, desk top or iPad. It is a key component of daily life taken for granted by countless folks.

For instance, in a number of communities need these 99 percent of the time to look for employment or a place to live. Not having one is crippling. Without it the chances of a successful job hunts decrease to almost nothing. No job, no place to live. No food and poverty. It is a simple line from a computer to a not so cushy life.

Some of the more important functions not only include looking for a place to live. Practical use comes in the form of instructions, resumes, guidelines, phone numbers and even addresses.

All available online, but getting there is the issue. Things like phone books and paper resumes are a thing of the past. Connecting with family and friends is generally done via a computer or smart phone.

The next generation relies upon it heavily for educational purposes

Modern technology plays an enormous role in the national educational system and access to this tool is a necessity. Students and teachers use it daily to get school work or assignments done.Without it, there is a good chance students are lost in the learning process.

Information shared, understood and built upon all happen with more efficiency since introducing these machines making life easier. Seeing students working with these is as common as a pencil or piece of writing paper used to be.

Parents communications with the school, teachers and even school related events are linked to this technology. Missed day or classes, when prom is coming up and other positive info. Now negative light is being shined on them. There are Amber Alerts and bomb threats also connecting schools and thousands of parents.

Historically when these were first introduced to this arena it was at higher levels of education, but now first and second graders are adapt at usage. Even a toddler is able to understand and use a tablet.

Expectations of learning has increased because of the amount of time spent online accessing info. Additionally, introduction early in life accounts for raising the educational bar.

What happens to the kids attending school without one or unable to get one handily to get the work done? Having one available to use whenever needed no matter a family's income is a life saver. Imagine it as a way to make the life of a child better and certainly easier. It is so much more than most individuals understand or know.

Education is power and the quantity and quality gained because of this device is become enormous. In countless circumstances it becomes priceless.

Getting benefits from the government

Veterans are required to use one to apply for benefits. Low income folks living on food stamp assistance or medicaid are in the same boat. Even Medicare is tied to the computer system in lots of cities or towns where a physical building or presence is no longer available for help. Even walking into a federal building means using a Kiosk to get help.

Income verification from governmental sources is commonly discovered on a website and not through snail mail. It not only gets the job done faster, but certainly less costly.

Where to locate a computer when one is not available at home? These are several examples of ideas put forth to help folks falling into these circumstances.

Where to find computers?

For countless families there are other more pressing needs than computers or internet access. One of the largest public locations to open it's doors to these people have been public libraries.

This is a place where members of a community use it with no charge. This is a wonderful idea, but not everyone lives where this is a possibility. Countless are out of reach. Residing in a rural area outside of a town or city with a library means no access to free use of computer and WiFi.

This resource is limited even where available. The number of people needing this particular type of service outweighs the number of buildings and computers offering it.

When asked on a government survey, nearly every city over 100,000 citizens admit there is a shortage when it comes to getting the aid where it is needed.

With supply more than demand there are restrictions or guidelines in place to make sharing more equal among patrons. As long as a user is a card holding member there is permission to use one if the rules are followed.

The one guideline most griped about is limited to two hours per day. For most more time is needed to take care of the smallest amount of business. Lines are long and frustrating for users and staff there to help.

There are waiting lists every day and tons of folks turned away without completing important business. Without the tech, the task is left incomplete or not even given a chance to start.

There are some individuals unable to obtain even a simple library card needed or transportation to get to a library with computers on hand. Hours of operation are not always convenient as well. Websites are monitored and restricted when necessary..

Employment Centers

The idea was brilliant and worked for a while, but now it has been thrown under the bus like the rest of the needy. Applying for a job, getting resumes sent out, creating resumes and searching job sites were all there for those looking for work. It made the entire process a little less stressful.

More than a few companies choose to contact a worker via the web. Generally email is the preferred method. This means checking on a job prospect needs one as well. Getting fired by email is not unheard of either.

With the unemployment rate at nearly 10% in lots of cities, almost all employment opportunity places offer free of charge use of computers for job seekers. This is yet another location with an excessive amount of people measured against a lesser amount of resources. People sometimes wait several days to use one.

When unemployment centers in the physical form began to shut down in countless places it made it virtually impossible to have the access to WiFi once available. Job hunting is a grueling experience and when out of work for a while it is tough.

There is a constant need to be available, just in case a job comes along. Without a piece of tech to connect to the web, things look bleak. Job seekers are on the go looking for work, waiting to hear back about work and having a back up plan just in case.

What to do?

Help is out there

Individuals, businesses and a great number of organizations are trying to come up with answers to this enormous issue. The problem is getting aid for people who need access to the internet via a computer. Linking up this tech with those who desperately need it.

These are folks attempting to think of solutions to help the most people for the least amount of money. Individuals understand the real issue at hand and make a solid attempt to do something positive about it.

Big companies letting go of refurbished ones

These people are working hard to get individuals a free one when possible. if not new, at least low cost or nearly without any charge. Lots of big corporations have been using refurbished equipment.

Most of the businesses look a the entire process as a winner. The landfills are full of lithium batteries from laptops and tablets, reuse helps lessen this impact on the earth. Additionally, people get the items needed to access the web. Companies are writing off the donations and seen in a much more positive light within a community.

There are free computers available for low income families and similar sources who need them. There are examples of these devices being given away through a variety of resources. These are some of the most visible at this time.

Computer recycling centers

Centers with recycling capabilities are making refurbished ones available for low income families. There is even an effort to introduce these as soon as possible in communities where the need is greatest.

Not all cities have these facilities. Check local listings to discover whether or not these are in a certain area.

The computer equipment is generally put in a central location to share with as many people as possible. These are not owned by an individual, but put into a community based setting for multiple users. Public buildings with central locations workout best.

Community centers and libraries are typically the favorites. This kills two birds with one stone. Not only are needs being met for a shortage, but it avoids more landfill garbage around the world. Tech includes copiers and other related objects.

Additionally it puts them in front of low income families, the elderly, teachers and even other municipal based organizations using refurbished or recycled ones. This source is limited by how many are used and able to be reused again. Refurbishing is a wonderful idea. Again supply and demand are not even close to one another. Demand is still winning the race.

A few are given to individual sources

Drawings are held to give away more than a few. These are sometimes limited to employees, but more and more are taking it outside to the community who really needs it.

Application forms are completed to determine who qualifies for the limited number of supply. How the process works and how to apply is info found on these particular type of company's websites. Use search engines to locate computer recycling centers for any particular individual area.

This online program offers these with no cost. It gets reserves via the benefits of charitable organizations and programs. The largest sources come in the form of gifts and donations. These flow directly to benefit low income families and persons in need.

On the website is a resource section to get signed up. Info needed like procedures and guidelines as well as other important material related to the program is found here. Further details to answer specific questions are also located around the site..

Computers 4kids

This association focuses on local assistance for children in need. Aid is delivered on how to get a donated one for each child in need who signs up. The site is easy to move around for finding info and has a resource box which permits users to view the locations of specific donation organizations and details on how kids apply.

World Computer Exchange

This World Computer Exchange is designed as a form of rescue for used ones. It is functioning similar to other organizations allowing a plan to recycle and put these same ones back into the community for secondary use.

Countless folks not only give items no longer working, but choose to donate them while still useful. The company refurbishes computers and disperses in the United States as well as around the world. Personal info is scrubbed and donators are secure and anonymous.

Tons of people personally benefit. A combination of smaller businesses around the globe are working together to get the job done. The site gives more detailed info on receiving a computer or a laptop for no fee. The majority of users are college kids.

Getting one with no charge is definitely an attractive temptation for tons of students who attend college anywhere around the world. This describes the largest type of visitor to the site.

In conclusion

All of these organizations are an excellent source for those looking for searching for a free computer. Millions of folks take the ownership of one for granted. Low income families, the elderly and community organizations are helping make personal neighborhoods, communities, cities and towns a better place. All of these people and places benefit from these types of technological resources.

Everyone has different needs. If one source is not a good fit, try another.

Extremely important information

The irony of this article is in order to find a computer; you need a computer to read this information.

A mini netbook is an enterprising gift for any kid. This is an inexpensive purchase easily passed on for secondary use. Check out what Atoah 7inch Mini is able

No charge for repair of a broken one. Fixing laptops and desktops at no cost for those who need it

There is a awesome website called Free Computer Repair dot com. This particular company is filled with self help explanations for nearly any type of trouble shooting and repair.

It specializes in restoring laptops, desktops, hardware and software. The no fee tutorials and guides are excellent resources for those willing to mend a non working one.

A little Do It Yourself is a small price to pay. Easy fixes are what cause most of the malfunctions along with not cleaning and updating installed software.

Used ones are thrown away or given without a charge. Look into ad boards under free or little to discover no cost items to work with. Taking the time to get tutorials on items no one wanted anyway puts most folks in a win/win situation.

Colleges and Universities give these way more than most people imagine. Look into these for those students extending education past high school

One of the biggest laptop consumers in the country and around the world happen to be college students. Enrollment to higher learning institutions means necessities like getting books, paying for tuition and owning a computer (preferably a laptop).

Looking out over a classroom or lecture hall gives a great inventory of how many computers are being used to take a single college course. Along with the kids, professors are also sometimes ignorant of how personally they rely on the tech.

These increase the chance for success. The ultimate goal is to complete with a degree in hand and a bright future. Not everyone takes for granted the extras on top of the tuition. In fact, it is too much for some.Imagine a full ride scholarship is given. Laptops are considered among the extras and not included.

Where a student comes from makes a difference

There are countless students in poverty making it work somehow to get to these universities and colleges to take them out of the role circumstances has made for the. There are other places to be through hard work and determination.

There is some truth in breaking molds and bad habits. Being one of the first in a family is winning the gold medal, but the tech is required to cross the finish line with that degree in hand. Find out avenues available to get one.

There is a continuing and ongoing search to get one. Finding a source to help out. Whether used, new, refurbished or several years old. If it works the problem is solved and the stress is gone.

This is a resource of several of the programs I have come across in a search for one. As cheap as possible or the dream of a free one is generally the ideal.

Colleges find them for the needy

This is not a program where money is put out and then students pay it back. Networks are in places of higher education with a means of obtaining laptops for students in need. There is not a one hundred percent success rate and there are always less available than what is needed.

There are those choosing to advertise used computers via online boards or intranet services for other options. Students own them and are willing to sell them at a low price or simply give them away. Look to see if what college are in one of these categories.

It does not need to be a huge university. Vocational schools have alumni and other resources which have invested in the next generation of graduates as well.

Loan one to those disadvantaged

A wonderful example is one institution incorporated an idea where members of the same school give classmates older or laptops no longer being used. Generally older classmates are letting incoming students get these.

The machines are in working order and ideal for the recipient. More than a few enrolled are fortunate and own more than one.

The computers are used during the term. However, when school is over a return policy is part of the process. Although the few schools with this in place have discovered this is the exception and not the rule.

There are owners giving tech out without the need or desire to see it returned. These items are generally no longer needed. Again this practice is scarce among smaller schools and colleges.

Computers with causes

An easy application is completed. The company is Computers Without Causes dot org. All though this business is flooded with requests there is a drive to make certain there is a computer matching an individual. Organizations also use this company for donations.

Thousands of pieces of hardware or given to anyone receiving assistance from the government which includes food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare or other forms of income from the government.

Because of the overwhelming needs, there is a process in place to decide who gets one. An extensive background check and references are needed.

Be patient, this is not an overnight success. It takes at least a couple of weeks.

Online education

Accessing learning opportunities from online courses are even more needy. People enrolled in these courses are in a predicament where classes are attended online. A computer is needed to get online. These are the individuals backed into the worst corner.

The necessity has been recognized by many of the colleges offering online enrollment for education. Quite a few understand the smart move is including the hardware as part of the cost for tuition.

A wonderful example is ICDC College. The offer stands to relieve students of the stress of getting one. The idea is brilliant and hopefully will catch on as a norm for every one out there.

My College Laptop dot com

My college laptop dot com is an organization reaching across the nation. There is a variety colleges involved in this opportunity. If fact the enormous listing helps an individual look through those with technological assistance readily available. No waiting period or excessive application makes for an appealing process.

Not only are computers offered, but other tech is there for the taking. Read rules or guidelines.

Follow up to the original article

I wanted to point out to some of the folks reading the article the ideas are genuine. I used the Freecycle service to find a computer for my daughter. There was a kind person who donated a laptop to her in response to my post.

It was in great shape and appreciated. Please continue to follow through on some of these if a computer is still a need. I will also add updates as i come into the information on other services.

The best analysis and repair tools for computers. These are software downloads which fix a multitude of issues

This is a video of evaluates and compares 10 best desk top computers

Help each other out

More than a few readers are asking how to get a computer at low cost or for free. Others have been kind enough to give some additional info and insight of personal knowledge of programs no listed here.

I have updated and incorporated these into the article. There is a hope all of this is going to help at the very least one person. If more, i am extremely happy.

Seniors have not been forgotten

Get ready to match the old with the new. A the business Senior Computers Associates is a wonderful avenue. Not only is the software and hardware offered, but there are opportunities for training. Getting familiar with it makes for less stress when using it.

The company gives away 500 free computers annually, but there are some conditions.

A. Must know how to use and operate. A mini class with the company is a stipulation.

B The candidate needs to be physically challenged with different needs.

Computer Associations is attempting to help the community. There are have several veterans, Mount Pleasant Senior Center and countless other venues and folks.

Understandably most folks in the senior age category have some physical ailments. With a laptop on hand the therapy needed to stimulate the brain or express conversation (needs and wants) are easier.

Although college is more than very important, living the last years of a person's life with dignity is as well.

I want to congratulate you on making a wonderful choice in life to continue your education.

community colleges vary from state to state. There are online colleges which provide students with laptops as part of the overall tuition.

Are there classes available online via the college where this is a possibility?

I know this article talks about low income families, but I am just myself. I'm low income living in a low income housing and I'm also already a student at a community college in Arizona. Should I ask my college if they provide free laptops, or should I try something else? My sister helps some by giving me $40 each month, but that's barely enough. Certainly not enough for a laptop that's in great condition.

In our society computers are needed to run everyday life activities. They are used for pharmacy prescriptions, school, applying for jobs, etc. Online classes is another category to add to the list.

Resources mentioned here are for any sort of use and online education is part of that list.

Countless universities give a laptop for online courses as part of the overall tuition cost. ie. ICDC College.

This is an online college /university with degrees in a number of fields. Enrolled students get a free laptop as part of the overall cost for education. Search around for other similar opportunities. They do exist.

AJM, did you get a chance to review this is a wonderful resource where lots of people have had success. there are also those folks working thru churches and similar organizations.

the competition is tough and schools make it impossible for kids to work without the internet or a computer. based on the number of kids without one this is something lots of school districts should look into. maybe parent organizations and even those outside of them need to put pressure on districts to include them as part of the supplies given to kids by the school.

remember the saying to call your congressman? do it. get them involved by phone call or letter. there are sources they have not readily available to the rest of us.

Hope this is of some assistance for you and your granddaughter.
