Free Editing Picture Software

Updated on December 5, 2011

Gimp

Gimp is a free graphics software program that allows the user to easily edit and manipulate digital images with relative ease. The letters "IMP" in the word Gimp stand for Image Manipulation Program and it does exactly what it says on the label.

Without any prior knowledge or experience of using software to manipulate digital art I downloaded Gimp2 and I was creating my own images to go with my writing in a matter of minutes.

Save as Layers

Below is an example of how I used a photograph of my son with a background I got from Deviantart stock from an artist called Ashensorrow. I simply opened both pictures in Gimp “as layers” and then merged the layers to create the picture I then used for my hub titled ... “Why The Law of Attraction doesn't work for Everyone”.

Smudge it!

Two other very useful tools are the “text tool” which allows you to write on the picture and the smudge tool to create some cool smudge effects to give your photo that “mysterious” look.

Below is another picture I created using a stock photograph I used from an artist called Birdsistersstock also in Deviantart to create a photo for my FaceBook Fan Page “Meditation for The Day”. This picture clearly shows the smudge effect and the text reinforces the message I wanted to portray through the image.

More ways to smudge

In the picture below I used the smudge tool to create the Godlike figure in this beautiful stock image from the artist Wyldraven and the eyes I got from the artist BeMojostock which I simply added as a separate layer. Both these artists' stock photos are from Deviantart.

In the picture below you can see how I used the smudge tool again to create the faces in this beautiful stock image from the artist CB-Stock in deviantart.

Gratitude

I am very grateful to the creators of Gimp Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis and the volunteers who continue to maintain and enhance the software. Gimp2 has opened up a whole new way for me to express myself and has enabled me to create exactly the the kind of image I want to support the written message that I post. I am very grateful to the artists in Deviantart who provide such amazing stock art for me to work with and all they ever ask in return is that I link their images back to their respective galleries.

Creativity is the Greatest Human Motivator

The creation of Gimp is another example of how the so called experts have gotten it all wrong with regard to what they have been telling us all these years about what motivates us to do what we do. It is actually not money that is our greatest motivator because if was then Gimp, Apache, and Wikipedia but to name a few simply would not exist in the world. The following RSA video will explain what I mean and perhaps get you to question what you have taken for granted all these years about your motivators and perhaps free you to really express yourself as the creative energy that you are.

Below is a link to my art gallery in Deviantart where you can also find links to the original stock art that I used for each picture. By clicking on a picture you will also be provided with a description and the links to all the parts involved in the creation of each picture by .
